In order to evaluate the stability of railway cut-slope under rainfall, explanatory variables and subordinate variables were selected for multivariate analysis. Furthermore the site which had occurred failure due to rainfall was investigated, and by executing multivariate analysis for 121 cases, critical rainfall was defined by the case that had high value of correlation factor. The 0.3 square value of maximum hourly rainfall during 24 hours before failure caused the collapse of railway cut-slope and could be used to estimate the stability of railway cut-slope. From the result of application to a collapse example, the evaluaton method by critical rainfall curve is satisfactory.
Uncertainty is a fact belonging to engineering practice. An important uncertainty that sets geotechnical engineering is the variability associated with the properties of soils or, more precisely, the characterization of soil profiles. The reason is due largely to the complex and varied natural processes associated with the formation of soil. Spatial variability analysis for the study of the stability of natural slopes, complementing conventional analyses, is able to incorporate these uncertainties. In this paper the characterization is performed in back-analysis for a case of landslide occurred to verify afterwards the presence of the conditions of shear strength at failure. This approach may support designers to make more accurate estimates regarding slope failure responding, more consciously, to the legislation dispositions about slope stability evaluation and future design. By applying different kriging techniques used for spatial analysis it has been possible to perform a 3D-slope reconstruction. The predictive analysis and the areal mapping of the soil mechanical characteristics would support the definition of priority interventions in the zones characterized by more critical values as well as slope potential instability. This tool of analysis aims to support decision-making by directing project planning through the efficient allocation of available resources.

The paper compared the Bishop methed to the Fellenius method in the analysis of slope stability. Laboratory model test was carried out in the case of seepage flow considered. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows; 1. The slice pieces of 10 were enough to analysis the slope stability. 2. The safety factor. by the Fellenius method was lower than the Bishop method by the 96 to 97% in the case of no seepage flow and by the 95 to 96% in the case of seepage flow considered. 3. Besides the parameter of soil and slope, the safety factor of slope was influenced by the height of slope. This phenomena was distinct in the height of height less than 10 meters. 4. In the case of clay, there was no difference in the safety factor of slope between Fellenius and Bishop rnethod. The safety factors of slope with the seepage flow considered were lower than those with no see-page flow. 5. The influence of cohesion on the safety factor was more significant in the Bishop method than in the Fellenius method. 6. The slope failure of model test of A and B soil samples with high permeability coefficient was taken place slightly in vicinity of toe by the concentration of stress and gradually increased 7. Under condition of same slope height, the shapper the slope, the shorter the radius and the center of critical circle appered downward and finally failure of slope occured inside the slope.
In this study, the increment effect of safety factor according to increasing of horizontal permeability coefficient is analyzed when geocell is installed on the slope for protection. To evaluate the horizontal permeability and reinforcement effect, the laboratory tests such horizontal permeability test were conducted. According to the laboratory test results, as the porosity rate of geocell increases, the coefficient of horizontal permeability is also increased. And also, regardless of the different types of filled materials, the coefficient of horizontal permeability is improved in a geocell reinforced ground compare with the non-reinforced ground. Laboratory test results and the rainfall intensity were applied to the numerical modeling of slope for seepage analysis and stability analysis of slope by using Soilworks, numerical analysis program. As a result of the slope stability analysis, it is confirmed that the installed geocell on the slope facilitates the drainage of water on the surface of slope. Hence, the ground water elevation is suppressed. Therefore, the safety factor of the slope is increased by the increasing of the internal friction angle, apparent cohesion, and coefficient of horizontal permeability by reinforcing the slope with geocell.
Stability of rock slope is greatly affected by the geometry and strength of discontinuities developed in the rock mass. In this study an analytical method which is capable of analyzing the effect of relative orientation between the discontinuities and the slope face on the safety of slope by assessing their vector components was used to evaluate the stability and the maximum cut-angle for the proposed slope design. The results of computerized vector analysis revealed that slope area under investigation might be divided into 3 sections of different face directions. The safety factors for benches in each 3 sections were calculated using the limit-equilibrium theory. Then, by utilizing the concept of probabilistic risk analysis, the susceptibility of entire slope failure was estimated. Based on the distribution of safety factor in each bench, the maximum cut angle of each section could be selected differently ot achieve the permanent stability of the entire slope.

Many factors about the stability for the reservoir embankments is determined when the facility is completed. Therefore the initial design of the embankment is important. Many researchers focused the effect of soil parameters although the cross section greatly affects the stability and can be controlled in design step. The objective of this research is to analysis of the effects for the safety factor of slope and seepage according to change cross-section in embankment. As a result, the quantity of seepage decreased as the gradient of downstream slope decreased and was proportional to the height of embankments. There was a linear relationship between the gradient of slope and the safety factor of slope. However the gradient of slope did not affect other side slope. All in a relationship, regressive equations with a high correlation coefficient were calculated and can be applied the simple estimation method of the stability using the cross-section. As results of analyzing the sensitivity, the friction angle and permeability critically effect for the slope stability and the seepage, respectively. The effect of the slope gradient was similar to major soil properties.
To evaluate the stability of a rock slope with one pre-exiting vertical crack, this paper performs corresponding probabilistic stability analysis. The existence of cracks is generally ignored in traditional deterministic stability analysis. However, they are widely found in either cohesive soil or rock slopes. The influence of one pre-exiting vertical crack on a rock slope is considered in this study. The safety factor, which is usually adopted to quantity the stability of slopes, is derived through the deterministic computation based on the strength reduction technique. The generalized Hoek-Brown (HB) failure criterion is adopted to characterize the failure of rock masses. Considering high nonlinearity of the limit state function as using nonlinear HB criterion, the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) is used to accurately approximate the implicit limit state function of a rock slope. Then the MARS is integrated with Monte Carlo simulation to implement reliability analysis, and the influences of distribution types, level of uncertainty, and constants on the probability density functions and failure probability are discussed. It is found that distribution types of random variables have little influence on reliability results. The reliability results are affected by a combination of the uncertainty level and the constants. Finally, a reliability-based design figure is provided to evaluate the safety factor of a slope required for a target failure probability.
To effectively manage flood risk, it is crucial to assess the stability of flood defense structures like levees under extreme flood conditions. This study focuses on the time-dependent probabilistic assessment of embankment slope stability when subjected to rapid water level drops. We integrate seepage analysis results from finite element analysis with slope stability analysis and employ Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the time-dependent behavior of the slope during rapid drawdown. The resulting probability of failure is used to develop fragility curves for the levee slope. Notably, the probability of slope failure remains low up to a specific water level, sharply increasing beyond that threshold. Furthermore, the fragility curves are strongly influenced by the rate of drawdown, which is determined through hydraulic analysis based on flood scenarios. Climate change has a significant impact on the stability of the water-side slope of the embankment due to water level fluctuations.
Based on the effective stress principle, a new formula for shear strength of unsaturated soil is derived under the general nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) strength criterion to improve the classical strength criterion of unsaturated soil. Meanwhile, the simple irrigation model under steady seepage is adopted to obtain the distribution of the matrix suction or the degree of saturation (DOS) above the groundwater table in the slope. Then, combined with the improved strength criterion of unsaturated soil and the simple irrigation model under steady seepage, the limit equilibrium (LE) solutions for the unsaturated slope stability are established according to the global LE conditions of the entire sliding body with assumption of the stresses on the slip surface. Compared to the classical strength criterion of unsaturated soil, not only the cohesion soil but also the internal friction angle is affected by the matric suction or the DOS in the improved strength criterion. Moreover, the internal friction angle related to the matric suction has the nonlinear characteristics, particularly for a small of the matric suction. Thereafter, the feasibility of the present method is verified by comparison and analysis on some slope examples. Furthermore, stability charts are also drawn to quickly analyze the unsaturated slope stability.
In this paper, the stability standards of slopes reclaimed by soils mixed with stone dust were proposed to manage the stone dust as recovery soils. First of all, the mixed ratio between stone dust and natural soil is classified into 5 groups, and a series of soil test was performed in each group. As the results of tests, the shear strength and the maximum dry unit weight were increased in decrease of the mixed ratio of stone dust. On the basis of the investigation to the safety factor standards of embankment slopes in and outside the country, a slope stability rank of slopes reclaimed by mixed soils were divided into 3 stages such as unstable stage, attention stage and stable stage. The slope angle, the slope height and the mixed ratio with stone dust were proposed by the result of stability analysis of slopes reclaimed by mixed soils. As the result of slope stability analysis, the slope angle of 1 : 1.8 at the reclaimed slope should be constructed in case of the slope height of 10 m. Also, the slope angle of 1 : 1.8 and the mixed ratio of stone dust less than 50% should be constructed in case of the slope height of 15 m. The analysis result of reclaimed slope constructed inside the quarry is similar to that of reclaimed slope constructed on the open ground in same conditions of the slope angle, the slope height and the mixed ratio with stone dust. The proposed stability standards of slopes reclaimed by soils mixed with stone dust can be used practically at the quarrying site.
