The natural disaster occurrences and the loss of lives caused by the steep-slope failures in Korea were investigated in this study. The investigation includes the frequency rate of the steep-slope failures with respect to the characteristics of precipitation, underlying bedrock, and weathered soils. Analysis on the problems in the existing estimation methods of steep-slope failure was also undertaken, and a new model using unsaturated infinite slope stability was developed for the better slope failure estimation. The slope analyses by the newly developed model were performed considering unsaturated infinite slope, the gradient of slope, and hydro/mechanical properties of soils. Steep-slope failure estimation criterion is proposed based on the analysis results. In addition, the precipitation amount corresponding to warning stages against steep-slope failure is provided as an equation of Intensity-Duration criterion.

It is very difficult to determine the failure block scale in great rock slopes. Especially, postulating entire slope domain as a failure block without attention to discontinuity trace lenth makes very confuse and difficult to design rock slopes. In this paper, we estimate realistic failure block scale using joint system simulation method and introduce the application procedures on rock slope analysis. Besides, presenting how joint characteristics measurement and statistical analysis results are applicated to slope stability analysis design flow.

The aim of this study was to analyze the slope stability relating to the failure of cut slopes and the characteristics of stress-strain relations obtained by limit equilibrium method, finite element method, and stereographic projection method for the reinforced cut slopes. The following conclusions were made : 1.To use stereographic projection method led to little possibility to take the toppling and wedge failure while to use the other methods led to the failure. It was recommended to reduce the slope inclination from 1:1 to 1: 1.5~1 :1.8 and adopt coir mesh method to protect the slope surface. position with the horizontal displacement after final excavation moved to the excavation base. The maximum shear strain values concentrated at the excavation base indicated the possibility to induce the local failure. 3. It was recommended that the slope inclination for blast rock with the slope height larger than l0m was 1: 0.5, 1:1, and 1: 1~1 :1.5 for hard rocks, soft and ordinary rocks, and ripping and soils, respectively. 4. Berm width criteria for blast rock with the slope height larger than l0m were recommended as follow : 2~3m per 20m slope height for hard rocks, 1 ~2m per l0m slope height for soft and ordinary rocks, 1 ~ l.5m per 5m slope height for ripping and soils.
In this study, we collected data through the investigation of rock slopes of highway. By analyzing the collected data, the main factors of rock slope failure were studied. We studied on the failure types and scales according to rock types and geological structures in many rock slopes of highway. As a result, it was shown that many failed slopes were distributed in the areas of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of south-eastern part in the Korean Peninsula and the Gneiss Complex in both Kyonggi-Do and Kangwon-Do. According to rock types, the following slope failure types were shown : that igneous rocks had the types of rock fall, plane failure, soil erosion and circular failure but had low failure frequency, and sedimentary rocks had predominantly the type of plane failure. Metamorphic rock showed the types of circular failure, wedge failure and plane failure due to poor rock qualities . According to geological structures, the following slope failure types were shown slope failure in igneous rocks was caused by joints, and in sedimentary rocks by bedding plane, and in metamorphic rocks by faults and poor rock qualities.

The stability of rock slope is considered to have a deep relation with types of rocks because types of rocks have their own typical weathering profiles, geological structures and characteristics of failures. Therefore it is essential for the evaluation of rock slope stability to analyze geological and engineering characteristics in rock mass. The data which collected from investigated slopes in sedimentary rock of Kyengsang Basin along highways were analyzed. Primary factors affecting slope stability in rock mass are: dips and strikes of slopes and discontinuities, shear strength of discontinuities, slope geometry and geological structures etc.
Buckling failure is a typical slope instability mode that should be paid more attention to. It is difficult to provide systematic guidance for the monitoring and management of such slopes due to unclear mechanism. Here we examine buckling failure as the potential instability mode for a slope above a railway tunnel in southwest China. A comprehensive model test system was developed that can be used to conduct buckling failure experiments. The displacement, stress, and strain of the slope were monitored to document the evolution of buckling failure during the experiment. Monitoring data reveal the deformation and stress characteristics of the slope with different slipping mass thicknesses and under different top loads. The test results show that the slipping mass is the main subject of the top load and is the key object of monitoring. Displacement and stress precede buckling failure, so maybe useful predictors of impending failure. However, the response of the stress variation is earlier than displacement variation during the failure process. It is also necessary to monitor the bedrock near the slip face because its stress evolution plays an important role in the early prediction of instability. The position near the slope foot is most prone to buckling failure, so it should be closely monitored.
The lapse of time may cause in the slope structure various deterioration phenomenon progresses in the ground of slope, and collapse due to deterioration of strength, resulting in a decrease in the service life. The approach to slope stability due to the ground deterioration is a different concept from the existing limit equilibrium analysis, which is limited to the physical characteristics and geometrical structure of ground. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of various literature studies related to the slope failure characteristics and behaviors to presented the optimal formulas for shear strength reduction, such as the exponential function, the logarithmic function and the inverse hyperbolic function. And then a case study was performed on cut slope of Gyeongbu High Speed Rail construction site along the Yangsan fault zone, where the slope failure of shale layer vulnerable to deterioration occurred. As a result, it was confirmed that landslide occurred due to reduction of shear strength by deterioration, as safety factor is approx. 1.0 at the time when the slope failure occurred. Based on the comprehensive case study, as a quantitative approach to the evaluation of slope stability due to deterioration of ground, finally we propose a method for evaluating slope stability with optimal strength reduction curves.
The "pseudo-wedge" failure is a name for a complex instability occurring at the Sarcheshmeh open-pit mine (Iran). The pseudo-wedge failure contains both the rock bridge failure and sliding along pre-existing discontinuities. In this paper, a cross section of the failure area was first modeled using a bonded-particle method. The results indicated development of tensile cracks at the slope toe which explains the freedom of pseudo-wedge blocks to slide. Then, a three-dimensional discrete element method was used to perform a block analysis of the instability. The technique of shear strength reduction was used to calculate the factor of safety. Finally, the influence of geometrical characteristics of the mine wall on the pseudo-wedge failure was investigated. The safety factor significantly increases as the dip and dip direction of the wall decrease, and reaches an acceptable value with a 10-degree decrease of them.
The shallow sediments in the southwestern Ulleung Basin consist of mass flow deposits such as slide/slump and debris flow deposits (DFD), caused by slope failure. These sediments are proven to be important in studying geological disaster and stability of the seafloor. In this paper, we analysised the flow accumulation and slope failure susceptibility of the Ulleung Basin on the basis of multi-beam data, collected in this area. We also studied the distribution pattern and the seismic characteristics of the DFD in the uppermost layer of the Ulleung Basin on the basis of seismic data. The slope susceptibility was calculated as the frequency ratio of each factors including slope, aspect, curvature and stream power index (SPI), which causes the slope failure. These results indicate that the slope failure is frequently to occur in the southern and western continental slope of the Ulleung Basin. The sediment flow (mass flow) caused by the slope failure converges to the north and northwest of the Ulleung Basin. According to the seismic characteristics, the uppermost layer in study area can be divided into four sedimentary unit. These sedimentary units develop from the south and southwest to the north and northwest in association with slope susceptibility and flow accumulation.

In general, slope failures are occurred by the interaction among various factors(slope shape, hydraulic condition, and geologic condition, etc.). In the area where has a heavy rainfall, a great portion of slope failures are caused by seepage increasement with suitable failure condition. Many studies have been performed to find the cause of large-scale failures. In this study, three Cut-Slope failures caused by typhoon 'MAEMI' were investigated to find out factors causing large-scale slope failures. It was confirmed in this research that major reason of slope failures was the weak layer working along with other unstable factor. The large-scaled investigation concerning Cut-Slope will be needed to find out the Weak Layer.
