In this study, In order to prevent the safety accidents caused by the sliding, to develop the non-slip grating, the stability judgment based on the span length of the grating and the gap of the bearing bar is performed. The structural analysis of Grating was carried out in accordance with the provisions set out in Grating's load-bearing test conditions. As the span length increases, the deflection increases and the stress and span length tend to be proportional to each other. It was shown that the larger the span, the linear increase in stress and exponential increase in deformation of grating. The maximum stress of grating was approximately 58.2 MPa, indicating a very stable safety rate of about 4.3 compared to the yield strength of the grating material. Based on these results, it will be able to be utilized as the basic data for determining the optimal dimensions of non-slip grading by performing optimal designs in the future.

The fluid mechanics and operating conditions of gas-lubricated proceeding bearings in micro rotating machinery such as micro polarization modulator and micro gas turbine are different from their larger size ones. Due to non-continuum effects, there is a slip of gas at the walls. Thus in this paper, the slip flow effect is considered to estimate the pressure distribution and load-carrying capacity of micro gas-lubricated proceeding bearings as the local Knudsen number at the minimum film thickness is greater than 0.01. Based on the compressible Reynolds equation with slip flow, the static characteristics of micro gas-lubricated proceeding bearings are obtained. Numerical predictions compare the pressure distribution and load capacity considering slip flow with the performance of micro proceeding bearings without slip f]ow for a range of bearing numbers and eccentricities. The results clearly show that the slip flow effect on the static characteristics is considerable and becomes more significant as temperature increases.
In recent years, considerable attention has been paid to the research and development of high-strength steel plates, with particular emphasis on the enhancement of the seismic resistance of buildings and bridges. Many efforts have also been undertaken to improve the properties of high-strength bolts and weld materials. However, there are still different opinions on steel joints that combine high-strength bolts and fillet welds. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the design specifications and guidelines, especially for newly developed 1,400-MPa high-strength bolts, 570-MPa steel plates, and weld materials. This paper presents the results of literature reviews and experimental investigations. Test parameters include bolt strengths, weld orientations, and their combinations. The results show that advances in steel materials have increased the plastic deformation capacities of steel welds. That allows combination joints to gain their maximum strength before the welds have fracture failures. When in combination with longitudinal welds, high-strength bolts slip, come in contact with cover plates, and develop greater bearing strength before the joints reach their maximum strength. However, in the case of combinations with transverse welds, changes in crack angles cause the welds to provide additional strength. The combination joints can therefore develop strength greater than estimated by adding the strength of bolted joints in proportion to those of welded joints. Consequently, using the slip resistance as the available strength of high-strength bolts is recommended. That ensures a margin of safety in the strength design of combination joints.
The methods of design available for geocell-supported embankments are very few. Two of the earlier methods are considered in this paper and a third method is proposed and compared with them. In the first method called slip line method, plastic bearing failure of the soil was assumed and the additional resistance due to geocell layer is calculated using a non-symmetric slip line field in the soft foundation soil. In the second method based on slope stability analysis, general-purpose slope stability program was used to design the geocell mattress of required strength for embankment. In the third method proposed in this paper, geocell reinforcement is designed based on the plane strain finite element analysis of embankments. The geocell layer is modelled as an equivalent composite layer with modified strength and stiffness values. The strength and dimensions of geocell layer is estimated for the required bearing capacity or permissible deformations. These three design methods are compared through a design example. It is observed that the design method based on finite element simulations is most comprehensive because it addresses the issue of permissible deformations and also gives complete stress, deformation and strain behaviour of the embankment under given loading conditions.
An analytical procedure for calculating the failure load of a V-shaped rock notch under two-dimensional stress conditions was developed based on the slip-line plastic analysis method. The key idea utilized in the development is the fact that the α-line, one of the slip-lines, extends from the rock notch surface to the horizontal surface outside the notch when the rock around the notch is in the plastic state, and that there exists an invariant which is constant along the α-line. Since the stress boundary condition of the horizontal surface outside the rock notch is known, it is possible to calculate the normal and shear stresses acting on the rock notch surface by solving the invariant equation. The notch failure load exerted by the wedge was calculated using the calculated stress components for the notch surface. Rock notch failure analysis was performed by applying the developed analytical procedure. The analysis results show that the failure load of the rock notch increases with exponential nonlinearity as the angle of the notch and the friction of the notch surface increase. The analytical procedure developed in this study is expected to have applications to the study of fracture initiation in rocks through wedge-shaped notch formation, calculation of bearing capacity of the rock foundation, and stability analysis of rock slopes and circular tunnels.

Tribological characteristics in the sliding parts of oil hydraulic piston pumps are very important in increasing overall efficiency. In this study, the fluid film between the valve plate and the cylinder block was measured by using a gap sensor and the mercury-cell slip ring unit under real working conditions. To investigate the effect of the valve shape, we designed three valve plates each having a different shape. One of the valve plates was without bearing pad, another valve plate had bearing pad and the last valve plate was a spherical valve plate. It was noted that these three valve plates observed different aspects of the fluid film characteristics between the cylinder block and the valve plate. The leakage flow rates and the shaft torque were also investigated in order to clarify the performance difference between these three types of valve plates. From the results of this study, we found that the spherical valve plate estimated good fluid film patterns and good performance more than the other valve plates in oil hydraulic axial piston pumps.
This paper theoretically studies the cyclic behavior of hybrid connections between steel coupling beams and concrete shear walls with embedded steel columns. Finite element models of connections with long and short embedded steel columns are built in ABAQUS and validated against the test results in the companion paper. Parametric studies are carried out using the validated FE model to determine the key influencing factors on the load-bearing capacity of connections. A close-form solution of the load-bearing capacity of connections is proposed by considering the contributions from the compressive strength of concrete at the interface between the embedded beam and concrete, shear yielding of column web in the tensile region, and shear capacity of column web and concrete in joint zone. The results show that the bond slip between embedded steel members and concrete should be considered which can be simulated by defining contact boundary conditions. It is found that the loadbearing capacity of connections strongly depends on the section height, flange width and web thickness of the embedded column. The accuracy of the proposed calculation method is validated against test results and also verified against FE results (with differences within 10%). It is recommended that embedded steel columns should be placed along the entire height of shear walls to facilitate construction and enhance the ductility. The thickness and section height of embedded columns should be increased to enhance the load-bearing capacity of connections. The stirrups in the joint zone should be strengthened and embedded columns with very small section height should be avoided.

Fatigue tests were carried out to find the fatigue characteristics in the super-long life range by using a cantilever type rotational bending fatigue test machine. Three kinds of specimen in bearing steels with the quenched and tempered in air (A and B, B: shot peened after heal treatment) and under vacuum conditions(C:non-shot peened)were tested in this study. S-N curves obtained from fatigue tests of C specimen tend to come dawn again in the super-long life range due to fish-eye type cracking, while most of A and B specimens fractured by surface defects such as scratches and slip lines. This duplex S-N behavior for the high strength steels have to be reviewed by the change of fracture modes.

This paper analyze the steady state performance of a self-acting air lubricated slider bearing in hard disk/head system. Modified Reynolds' equation is derived from the steady state compressible Navier-Stokes equation, under slip-flow conditions. Finite difference technique and numerical procedure are described by using Newton-Raphson iteration method to slove the non-linear equations. These techniques are applied to conventional slider bearings and the effects of molecular mean free path(MMFP) for a recording surface of hard disk are shown. The calculation procedure developed here, wide applicabilities in practical head design procedures, and converges rapidly.
The dynamic performance of air foil bearings relies on a coupling between a thin air film and an elastic foil structure. A number of successful analytical techniques to predict dynamic performance have been developed. However, the evaluation of its dynamic characteristic is still not enough because of the mechanical complexity of the foil structure and strong nonlinear behavior of friction force. This work presents a nonlinear transient analysis method to predict dynamic performance of foil bearings. In this method, time dependent Reynolds equation is used to calculate pressure distribution and a finite element method is used to model the bump foil structure. The analysis is treated with a direct implicit integration technique that can handle nonlinear problems and the stick-slip algorithm is used to consider friction force. Using this method the response to the mass unbalance excitation is investigated for various design parameters and operating conditions. The results of analysis show that foil bearing is very effective on the restriction of vibration at the resonance frequency compared to the rigid surface bearings and the effectiveness depends on the operating conditions, static load and a amount of mass unbalance. In addition, there exist optimum values of friction coefficient, bump foil stiffness and number of circumferential slit with regards to minimizing dynamic response at the resonance frequency. These optimum values are system dependent.
