This study investigates the effects of corrosion resistance characteristics of opponent materials in relative motion on the sliding wear behavior of mild carbon steel. Pin specimens made of mild carbon steel are tested at several sliding speeds against mating discs made of two types of alloyed steels, such as type D2 tool steel (STD11) and type 420 stainless steel (STS420J2), with different corrosion resistance characteristics in a pin-on-disc type sliding wear test machine. The results clearly show that the sliding wear behavior of mild carbon steel is influenced by the corrosion resistance characteristics of the mating disc materials at low sliding speeds. However, the sliding wear behavior at high sliding speeds is irrelevant to the characteristics because of the rising temperature. During the steady state wear period, the sliding wear rate of mild carbon steel against the type 420 stainless steel at a sliding speed of 0.5 m/s increases considerably unlike against the type D2 tool steel. This may be because the better corrosion resistance characteristics achieve a worse tribochemical reactivity. However, during the running-in wear period at low sliding speeds, the wear behavior of mild carbon steel is influenced by the microstructure after heat treatment of the mating disc materials rather than by their corrosion resistance characteristics.
The effect of Mn on cavitation erosion resistance and the sliding wear resistance of Fe-base hardfacing NewAlloy was investigated. Mn is known to decrease stacking fault energy and enhance the formation of $\varepsilon$-martensite. Cavitation erosion resistance for 50 hours and sliding wear resistance for 100 cycles were evaluated by weight loss. Fe-base hardfacing NewAlloy showed more excellent cavitation erosion resistance than Mn-added NewAlloys. $\Upsilon-\alpha$' phase transformation that can enhance erosion resistance by matrix hardening occurred in every specimens. But, only in Mn free Fe-base hardfacing NewAlloy, the hardened matrix could repress the propagation of cracks that was initialed at the matrix-carbides interfaces more effectively than Mn-added NewAlloy The Mn free Fe-base hardfacing NewAlloy showed better sliding wear resistance than Mn-added alloys. Mn-addition up to 5wt.% couldn't increase the sliding wear and cavitation erosion resistance of Fe-base hardfacing alloy because it didn't make $\Upsilon\to\varepsilon$ martensite phase transformation. Therefore, it is considered that the cavitation erosion and the sliding wear resistance can be improved due to $\Upsilon\to\varepsilon$ martensite phase transformation when Mn is added more than 5wt.% in Fe-base hardfacing alloys.

The strength of sliding plane is usually assigned on the whole sliding plane with same value in 2D limit equilibrium slope stability method. However, the potential sliding plane is divided into two or three parts which have different sliding resistances. According to the calculation results of 3D slope stability analyses using 4 types of slope cutting models, marginal sliding resistance could affect the safety of slope significantly. In this calculation two kinds of the sliding plane strengths were applied differently to the parts of bottom and margin of the model slope. The effect of marginal resistance was calculated quantitatively. In case of lower sliding resistance of the bottom, the safety factor becomes low in a margin cutting model. However, in case of higher sliding resistance of the bottom, the safety factor decreased slightly in a lower part cutting model and increased in a upper margin cutting model.

Contact resistance variation which may be called sliding noise in carbon film variable resistors whose resistance elements consists of linear resistivity distribution were measured with several kinds of sliders and were analyzed to reduce the contact resistance variation. About the measuring method, the standard method of measuring contact resistance variation specified by the variable Resistance Components Institute was adupted. By analyzing the experimental results, it has been shown that the primary cause of contact resistance variation is due to current constriction and small discharge sparks in the resistance film in the area close to the slide contact. Moreover, it has been found that the sliding noise would be reduced by increasing the number of contact points, sliding speed, and pressure, and by using some kinds of insulation oil on the contacting surface. High contact resistance variation is likely to occur in the area of high resistance variation in a logrithmic resistance taper.
In this study, sliding wear tests were conducted to investigate the effects of tempered hardness on the sliding wear behavior of bearing steel. At a sliding speed of 0.3 m/s, the wear resistance of bearing steel with a tempered hardness of HRC 54 was superior to that with HRC 62. It was found that bearing steel with HRC 54 showed a strong tendency for the occurrence of oxidation wear at that speed, compared to that with HRC 62. This would be due to the troostitic structure of bearing steel with HRC 54, which is highly susceptible to corrosion. In this context, it is considered that sliding wear behavior could be affected by the corrosion resistance of the material.
In this study, we conducted resistance and propulsion performance test of ship composed of the Resistance Test, Propeller Open Water Test and Self Propulsion Test using the CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). We used commercial RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equation) solver, as a calculating tool. The unstructured grids were used in a bow and stern of ship, having complex shape, for a convenience of generating grids, and the structured grids were adopted in a central hull and rest of hull having a relatively simple shape which is called hybrid grid method. In addition, The sliding mesh method was adopted to rotate a propeller directly in the Propeller Open Water and Self Propulsion Test. The Resistance Test and Self Propulsion Test were calculated using Volume of Fluid (VOF) model and considering a free surface. And all The three cases were applied realizable k-epsilon model as the turbulence model. The results of calculations were verified for the suitability of calculations by comparing MOERI's EFD results.

This paper proposes an adaptive sliding mode observer (SMO), which adds the estimation function of the stator resistance to a new sliding mode observer for the robust sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with variable parameters. To reduce the chattering problem commonly found in the conventional sliding mode observer where the low-pass filter and additional position compensation of the rotor are used, the sigmoid function is used for the control of a switching function in this research. With the estimation of the stator resistance, the proposed observer can improve the control performance by reducing the estimation error of the motor's speed. Note that the stator resistance is varying with the ambient temperature and becomes an error source for the sensorless control of PMSM. The new sliding mode observer has better efficiency than the conventional adaptive sliding mode observer by reducing the time consuming integral calculations. The stability of the proposed adaptive sliding mode observer is verified by the Lyapunov function in determining the observer gains, and the effectiveness of the observer is demonstrated by simulations and experiments.

Boundary lubrication condition arises in most lubricated systems, especially during motion reversals and start up phase of operation. In this work electric contact resistance variations with respect to sliding conditions under lubrication is investigated The motivation was to improve the understanding of the contact condition in the boundary lubrication regime. It is shown that electrical contact resistance is sensitive to sliding speed and surface condition of the specimens. Also, phenomena such as run-in during the initial phase of sliding and lubricant pile up near the sliding pin could be observed. The results of this work will aid in better understanding of the metal to metal contact condition in lubricated systems.

The current study elucidates the effects of cementite spheroidization and pro-eutectoid ferrite on the sliding wear resistance in medium carbon (0.45wt%C) and high carbon (1wt%C) steels. Both steels were initially heat treated to obtain a fully pearlite or ferrite + pearlite microstructure. Spheroidizing heat treatments were performed on both steels to spheroidize the pearlitic cementite. Sliding wear tests were conducted using a pin-on-disk wear tester with the steel specimens as the disk and an alumina ($Al_2O_3$) ball as the pin. The sliding wear tests were carried out at room temperature in air with humidity of $40{\pm}2%$. Adapted sliding distance and applied load was 300m and 100N, respectively. Sliding speed was 0.1m/s and the wear-track radius was 9 mm. Worn surfaces and cross-sections of the wear track were examined using an SEM. Micro Vickers hardness of the wear-track subsurface was measured as a function of depth from the worn surface. Hardness and sliding-wear resistance of both steel decreased with increased spheroidization of the cementite. The decrease was more significant in the fully pearlitic steel (1wt%C steel). The steel with the pro-eutectoid ferrite showed relatively higher wear resistance compared to the spheroidized pearlitic steel.
