  • Sliding mode control method is popularly used for robustness to distrurbance and variance of systems internal parameter. However, one of the serious problem of this method is Chattering which occurs in neighborhood of sliding manifold. Another problem is that we cannot expect robustness before system starts sliding mode. A new tuning method of sliding manifold which changes the parameter of sliding manifold dynamically using Wavelet Neural Network is proposed in this paper. We can expect the better performance in sliding mode control by the wavelet neural networks excellent property of approximating arbitrary function for multi-resolution analysis and decrease chattering drastically.

  • In this paper, we develop a sliding mode controller that uses a nonlinear sliding manifold for the permanent magnet synchronous motor. The proposed controller makes sure that both currents and velocity tracking error converge into equilibria. Nonlinear sliding manifold consists of current dynamics and nonlinear functions which are designed with velocity tracking error and its integrated term. The nonlinear functions are designed to guarantee that velocity tracking error converge into zero. The closed-loop stability is proven by Lyapunov theory. The effectiveness of proposed method is demonstrated by numerical simulation results.

  • This paper presents an approach to nonlinear engine idle controller and intake manifold absolute pressure(MAP) observer based on mean torque production model. A stable engine idle speed is important in that the unstable engine Idle mode can make engine to drooping or stall state. A sliding fuzzy controller has been designed to control engine idle speed under load disturbance. A sliding observer is also developed to estimate the intake manifold absolute pressure and compared with the actual MAP sensor value. The sliding mode observer has shown good robustness and good tracking performance. The inputs of sliding fuzzy controller are the errors of rpm and MAP. The output is a duty cycle(DC) for driving a idle speed control valve(ISCV).

  • This paper focuses on the power-level control of nuclear power plants (NPPs) in the presence of lumped disturbances. An adaptive second-order nonsingular terminal sliding mode control (ASONTSMC) scheme is proposed by resorting to the second-order nonsingular terminal sliding mode. The pre-existing mathematical model of the nuclear reactor system is firstly described based on point-reactor kinetics equations with six delayed neutron groups. Then, a second-order sliding mode control approach is proposed by integrating a proportional-derivative sliding mode (PDSM) manifold with a nonsingular terminal sliding mode (NTSM) manifold. An adaptive mechanism is designed to estimate the unknown upper bound of a lumped uncertain term that is composed of lumped disturbances and system states real-timely. The estimated values are then added to the controller, resulting in the control system capable of compensating the adverse effects of the lumped disturbances efficiently. Since the sign function is contained in the first time derivative of the real control law, the continuous input signal is obtained after integration so that the chattering effects of the conventional sliding mode control are suppressed. The robust stability of the overall control system is demonstrated through Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, the proposed control scheme is validated through simulations and comparisons with a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, a super twisting sliding mode controller (STSMC), and a disturbance observer-based adaptive sliding mode controller (DO-ASMC).

  • In variable structure control algorithms, The control law used to realized the desired sliding mode dynamics is discontinuous on the switching manifold. However, due to imperfections in switching, such as time delays, the system trajectory chatters instead of sliding along the switching manifold. This chattering is undesirable because it may excite unmodeled high frequency dynamics in the physical system. In this paper, to overcome this drawback a self-organizing fuzzy sliding mode control algorithm using gradient descent method is proposed. The proposed method has the characteristics which are viewed in conventional VSC, e.g. insensitivity to a class of disturbance, parameter variations and uncertainties ill the sliding mode. To demonstrate its performance, the proposed control algorithm is applied to an inverted pendulum system. The results show that both alleviation of chattering and performance are achieved.

  • Thermal deformation of cast iron exhaust manifold for turbo diesel engine is investigated by finite element analysis (FEA). The FE model included the temperature dependent material properties as well as the interactions between exhaust manifold, cylinder head and fasteners. It also considers the sliding behavior of the flanges of exhaust manifold on cylinder head when either expansion or contraction of the exhaust manifold exceeds the fastener pretension. The result of analysis revealed that remarkable thermal deformation along the longitudinal direction. Compressive plastic deformation at high temperature remained tensile stress in manifold and resulted in longitudinal contraction at ambient temperature. The amount of contraction at each fastener position was predicted and compared with experimental results. Analysis results revealed that the model predicted deformation qualitatively, but more elaborated cyclic hardening behavior would be necessary to predict the deformation quantitatively.

  • In this paper, the robust nonlinear observer will be developed for PEM fuel cell system. Nonlinear model of PEM fuel cell system is introduced to study the design problems of observer. Sliding mode observer is designed to estimate the cathode and anode pressures of PEMFC system. And a nonlinear state observer is also designed to estimate the other states such as supply manifold pressure, Oxygen pressure, Hydrogen pressure, return manifold pressure, etc. The validity of the proposed observer will be verified by using Lyapunov's stability analysis method.

  • A discrete sliding mode control (SMC) method based on hybrid model of neural network and nominal model is proposed to reduce the vibration of flexible structures, which is a robust active controller developed by using a sliding manifold approach. Since the thick boundary layer will reduce the virtue of SMC, the multilayer feed-forward neural network is adopted to model the uncertainty part. The neural network is trained by Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation. The design objective of the sliding mode surface is based on the quadratic optimal cost function. In course of running, the input signal of SMC come from the hybrid model of the nominal model and the neural network. The simulation shows that the proposed control scheme is very effective for large uncertainty systems.

  • This paper describes the speed-sensorless vector control system of a three-phase induction motor using sliding mode flux/speed observer. The sliding mode observer estimates the rotor speed. The error between the actual and observed currents converges to zero which guarantees the accuracy of the flux observer. The convergence of nonlinear time-varying observer along with the asymptotic stability of the controller was analyzed. To define the control action which maintains the motion on the sliding manifold, an "equivalent control" concept was used. It was simulated and implemented on a sensorless indirect vector drive for 750[W] three-phase induction motor. The simulation and experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed estimation method.

  • In this paper, an integrated nonlinear sliding mode observer and controller has been designed in order to control of an automotive engine idle speed. The primary objective of the engine idle speed control is to maintain the desired engine idle speed despite of various torque disturbances via estimating air mass flow at the location of the injector in intake manifold by using a sliding mode observer. Simulation results show that the case where both throttle angle and ignition time are used as control inputs outperforms the case where just only throttle angle is used as a control input.
