  • The objective of this research was to study the formation of the thick hardened layer with the addition of metal powder(Cu) and ceramics powders(TiC) on the aluminum 5083 alloys by plasma transferred arc process(PTA process) and to characterize the effect of overlaying conditions on the overlaid layer formation. This was followed by investigating the microstructures of the overlaid layers and mechanical properties such as hardness and wear resistance. The overlaid layer containing copper powder was alloyed and intermetallic compound($CuAl_2$) was formed. The overlaid layers with high melting point TiC powders, however, did not react with base metal. Wear resistance of the alloyed layer was remarkably improved by the formation of $CuAl_2$, precipitate phase, which prevented wear of base aluminum alloys and at higher wear speed, accelerated sliding of the counter part. Wear resistance of the composite layer was also remarkably improved because TiC powder act as a load barring element and Fe debris fragments detached from the counter part act as a solid lubricant on the contact surface.

  • Nucleate pool boiling experiments were performed using pure R11 for various surface angles under constant heat flux conditions during saturated pool boiling. A 1-mm-diameter circular heater with an artificial cavity in the center that was fabricated using a MEMS technique and a high-speed controller were used to maintain the constant heat flux. Bubble growth images were taken at 5000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera. The bubble geometry was obtained from the captured bubble images. The effects of the surface angle on the bubble growth behavior were analyzed for the initial and thermal growth regions using dimensional scales. The parameters that affected the bubble growth behavior were the bubble radius, bubble growth rate, sliding velocity, bubble shape, and advancing and receding contact angles. These phenomena require further analysis for various surface angles and the obtained constant heat flux data provide a good foundation for such future work.

  • The graphites as airtight structure seals prevent high-pressure and high-temperature gas from flowing into actuator of propulsion system and generate lubricant film during wear procedure to assist lubricant and sealing. In this study, the tribological characteristics of the graphite in high-temperature are evaluated. In order to evaluate the tribological characteristics of high density graphite(HK-6), variables which are temperature, sliding speed and contact load are set. this study suggest optimized environment conditions through the wear properties of graphite. Consequeantly, high temperature is better than at room temperature to generate lubricant film, so that friction coefficient of graphite is lower at high temperature than at room temperature.

  • This paper details application of a DLC(Diamond Like Carbon)-coating to the swash plate and the ball joint of pistons that make sliding contact with the piston shoes of an axial piston pump. This process, aimed to reduce the frictional and leakage power losses of the hydrostatic piston shoe bearings at the low speed range. At lower speeds than 100rpm, the positive effects of the DLC-coating on the power loss reduction of the hydrostatic piston shoe bearings could be confirmed. These effects resulted in little improvement in volumetric efficiency of the test pump, but the mechanical efficiency could be raised by up to 5% at 100rpm; here, the DLC-coated swash plate played a more dominant role than the DLC-coated ball joint.

  • The friction coefficients of the rubber for clutch master cylinder were experimentally measured in this study. The cylindrical rubber samples for primary cup-seal and secondary cup-seal were tested against the aluminum or the steel plates of master cylinder housing under the various conditions of brake oil temperatures and normal loads. Dry sliding friction coefficients were also measured under various load conditions. The test revealed following results. First, the friction coefficient under fluid lubrication condition in general decreases, as the oil temperature or normal load increases. Second, the steel plate of low surface roughness yielded comparatively low friction coefficient on the range of 0.30∼0.67. On the other hand, the aluminum plate of high surface roughness yielded high friction coefficient on the range of 0.31∼1.15. Third, the friction coefficient of dry surface contact decreases as the normal load increases. This is contrary to the general principle of friction coefficient between metal plates.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinetic energy of putter head and ball movements during the process of impact. Highly skilled 5 golfers(less than 1 handicap) participated in this study and the target distance was 3 m. Movements of ball and putter head were recorded with 2 VHS video cameras(60 Hz, 1/500 s shutter speed). Small control object($18.5{\times}18.5{\times}78.5\;cm$) was used in this sdtuldy. Analyzing the process of impact, putter was digitized before 0.0835 s and after 0.0835 s of impact. Ball was digitized 0.1336 s after impact. The results showed that the maximum speed was appeared at Impact and prolonged for a while. Contact point of the club head was within 0.7 cm to the z axis. After contacting the club head, the ball was moved above the ground level(slide) and returned to the ground with sliding and rolling. After contacting the ground, the speed of ball was relied on the surface of the ground. During impact, 70% of kinetic energy of club head has been transferred to the ball.

  • The friction and wear behaviors of Magnetron Sputtered MoS$_2$films were investigated by using a pin on disk type tester which was designed and manufactured for this experiment. The experiment was conducted by using silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) as a pin material and Magnetron Sputtered MoS$_2$on bearing steel (STB2) as a disk material, under operating conditions that include different surface roughness (Polishing specimen, Grinding specimen)(2types), linear sliding velocities in the range of 22, 44, 66mm/sec (3types), normal loads vary from 9.8N, 19.6N, 29.4N(3types), corresponding to contact pressures of 1.9∼2.7GPa and atmospheric conditions of high vacuum( 1.3${\times}$10$\^$-4/Pa), medium vacuum( 1.3${\times}$10$\^$-l/Pa), ambient air(10$\^$5/Pa)(3types). We investigated fracture mechanism in magnetron sputtered MoS$_2$films with Magnetron Sputtering method in each experiment.

  • This study predicts the of the hysteretic friction of a rubber block sliding on an SMA asphalt road. The friction of filled rubber on a rough surface is primarily determined by two elements:the viscoelasticity of the rubber and the multi-scale perspective asperities of the road. The surface asperities of the substrate exert osillating forces on the rubber surface leading to energy dissipation via the internal friction of the rubber when rubber slides on a hard and rough substrate. This study defines the power spectra at different length scales by using a high-resolution surface profilometer, and uses rubber and road surface samples to conduct friction tests. I consider in detail the case when the substrate surface has a self affine fractal structure. The theory developed by Persson is applied to describe these tests through comparison with the hysteretic friction coefficient relevant to the energy dissipation of the viscoelastic rubber attributable to cyclic deformation. The results showed differences in the absolute values of predicted and measured friction, but with high correlation between these values. Hence, the friction prediction model is an appropriate tool for separating the effects of each factor. Therefore, this model will contribute to clearer understanding of the fundamental principles of rubber friction.

  • In this study, a car-door-controlled collision protection system using proximity sensor is proposed and its preliminary analysis and several preliminary experiments are conducted. The proposed system has three additional sub-components on the car-door that is, a pair of extra electro-magnetic actuator that are attached to the sliding bar of the open/close car-door four-bar mechanism, a proximity sensor that would be attached to the outside surface of the door which is likely to frequently contact to the object and a driving control circuit of the whole system. A proximity sensor is used to detect object close to the car-door, the driving control circuit provides actuating power command to the electro-magnets to generate braking force to stop the swing motion of the car-door. It is verified through kinematic analysis of the four-bar car-door open/close mechanism and through experiments that the magnitude of maximum electronic magnetic force could provide the braking force enough for this application. For this purpose, an electro-magnet driving circuit is implemented and tested. And also to increase the safety of the system a time delay circuit is implemented and tested.
