Recently nanoscience and nanotechnology have been studied intensively, and many plants, insects, and animals in nature have been found to have nanostructures in their bodies. Among them, lotus leaves have a unique nanostructure and microstructure in combination and show superhydrophobicity and a self-cleaning function to wipe and clean impurities on their surfaces. Coating films with combined nanostructures and microstructures resembling those of lotus leaves may also have superhydrophobicity and self-cleaning functions; as a result, they could be used in various applications, such as in outfits, tents, building walls, or exterior surfaces of transportation vehicles like cars, ships, or airplanes. In this study, coating films were prepared by dip coating method using polypropylene polymers dissolved in a mixture of solvent, xylene and non-solvent, methylethylketon, and ethanol. Additionally, attempts were made to prepare nanostructures on top of microstructures by coating with the same coating solution with an addition of carbon nanotubes, or by applying a carbon nanotube over-coat on polymer coating films. Coating films prepared without carbon nanotubes were found to have superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle of $152^{\circ}$ and sliding angle less than $2^{\circ}$. Coating films prepared with carbon nanotubes were also found to have a similar degree of superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle of 150 degrees and a sliding angle of 3 degrees.

The wear behaviors of ${Si_3}{N_4}$ under the different sliding conditions were investigated. The cylinder-on-disc wear tester was used. Using the servo-metor, the sliding speed did ot alternate due to the frictional forces. Threekinds of loads and speeds were selected to watch the variation of the wear rates and the frictional forces. Also three kinds of sliding condition under a constant speed were used to see the effects of the oxidationand the abrasion. The contact pressure was more effective than the repeated cycle on the wear behavior of ${Si_3}{N_4}$. With the low loads, the effect of the asperity-failure was more dominant than that of oxidation and abrasion. As increasing the load, the effects of oxidation and abrasion were increased, but the asperity-failure effects were decreased. The wear particles destroyed the ozide layers formed on sliding surfaces. The wear rate could be decreased due to delaying the oxidation. The frictional power and the wear weight per time were usefuel to see the transition of wear.
The friction and wear behaviors of ceramics against steels with lubricants were investigated and compared with those observed in air. Lubrications wbre done by a water and a commercial engine oil as received. The investigated ceramics were $Al_{2}O_{3}$, SiC, and $Si_{3}N_{4}$. Steels with 0.2 wt.% C were heat treated to obtain tempered structure. A cylinder-on-plate tribometer with rotated sliding motion was used to carry out the experiments. In the experiments reported here, the ranges of different testing speeds and loads were used. It was found that the friction and wear characteristics of tested pairs were significantly influenced by environments. In water and oil environments the wear of ceramics was reduced from 10$^{-6}$ g/s down to 10$^{-8}$ g/s in dry sliding at the same values of the frictional power which are the products of the friction coefficient, the load and the sliding speed. SiC showed excellent wear resistant behavior in water sliding, which was the lowest among tested ceramics, but it was, very poor in oils. In case of $Si_{3}N_{4}$, the wear rates were very low under oil environment, but the highest in water. The wear rates of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ were very low in both lubricating conditions at low values of the frictional power, but high at high values of the frictional power.

The wear behavior of two types of $Si_3N_4$ exposed to high and low humidity was examined at various sliding speeds, using bearing steel as disk material under pin-on-disk type sliding conditions. Higher wear rates were obtained at a high humidity than at a low humidity. As the sliding speed was increased, the wear rates were decreased and the effect of humidity on the wear rates of $Si_3N_4$ was reduced. The result that the $Si_3N_4$ pin showed higher wear rate under the high humidity condition was explained by the decrease in microhardness of $Si_3N_4$ due to the chemisorbed moisture on the pin and plowing action by the hard particles of $Fe_2O_3$ from the disk. An increase in the sliding speed is supposed to reduce the effect of humidity on the wear rate of $Si_3N_4$ by raising the average temperature of the disk surface and the local temperature at pin-disk contact point.

The steam generator tubes of power plant damaged by sliding wear due to flow-induced motion of foreign object. Amount of wear have been predicted by Achard's wear equation until now. However, there are large error and low reliability, because this equation regards wear coefficient(k) as constant. The sliding wears tests have been performed at room temperature to examine parameters of wear (wear distance, contact stress). The steam generator tube material for wear test is used Inconel 600 and foreign object material is used 304 austenite stainless steel. The sliding wear tests show that the amount of wear is not linearly proportional to the wear distance(for 374 austenite stainless steel). According to experimental result, wear coefficient is not constant k but function k(s) of wear distance. The newly modified wear predictive equation V=k(s)F have small error and high reliability.

Slips and falls are the major causes of the pedestrian injuries in the industry and the general community throughout the world. With the awareness of these problems, the friction coefficients of the interface between floorings and footwear have been measured for the evaluation of slip resistant properties. During this measurement process, the surface texture has been shown to be substantially effective to the friction mechanism between shoe heels and floor surfaces under various types of walking environment. Roughness, either of the floor surface or shoe heels, provides the necessary drainage spaces. This roughness can be designed into the shoe heel but this is inadequate in some cases, especially a wear. Therefore, it is essential that the proper roughness for the floor surface coverings should be provided. The phenomena that observed at the interface between a sliding elastomer and a rigid contaminated floor surface are very diverse and combined mechanisms. Besides, the real surface geometry is quite complicate and the characteristics of both mating surfaces are continuously changing in the process of running-in so that a finite number of surface parameters can not provide a proper description of the complex and peculiar shoe - floor contact sliding mechanism. It is hypothesised that the interface topography changes are mainly occurred in the shoe heel surfaces, because the general property of the shoe is soft in the face of hardness compared with the floor materials This point can be idealized as sliding of a soft shoe heel over an array of wedge-shaped hard asperities of floor surface. Therefore, it is considered that a modelling for shoe - floor contact sliding mechanism is mainly depended upon the surface topography of the floor counterforce. With the model development, several surface parameters were measured and tested to choose the best describing surface parameters. As the result, the asperity peak density (APD) of the floor surface was developed as one of the best describing parameters to explain the ambiguous shoe - floor interface friction mechanism. It is concluded that the floor surface should be continuously monitored with the suitable surface parameters and kept the proper level of roughness to maintain the footwear slip resistance. This result can be applied to the initial stage of design for the floor coverings.

Ball reducer (HERB Drive: High Efficient Wave Rolling Ball Drive) with waved grooves has many advantages over other types of reducers for high-reduction ratio, low noise and low energy loss, etc. The mechanism of force transmission is very similar to that of cam and follower in automobile valve train system especially in contact behaviors. In this study, we have investigated the traces of contact between ball and outer ring, and the dynamic contact behaviors of elastohydodynamic lubrication(EHL) with a certain reduction ratio. In order to verify the contact behaviors between ball and outer ring for the critical endurance lift, the contact velocity and load are computed for a cycle. During some intervals of a cycle, the contact velocity reverses its direction very suddenly. It is expected that changing the contact direction causes undesirable endurance performance because EHL film frequently col lapse at the moment of velocity reversal. From the computational investigation in this work, we hope to predict similar contact damages in other machinery due to this kind of contact behaviors, which is very typical in many contact phenomena.

This study analyzes the dynamic fracture phenomenon that aluminum rod impacts aluminum plate or rigid plate and deforms. The value of von-Mises stress in the instance that aluminum rod deforms on rigid plate after contact becomes 1.3 times as large as that in the instance of contact. On the contrary, the value of von-Mises stress in the instance that aluminum rod goes through aluminum plate after contact becomes 0.7 times as small as that in the instance of contact. The value of internal energy in the instance that aluminum rod contacts aluminum plate becomes 2.3 times as large as that in the instance that aluminum rod contacts rigid plate. But the value of kinetic energy in the instance that aluminum rod contacts aluminum plate becomes 0.9 times as small as that in the instance that aluminum rod contacts rigid plate. The value of internal energy in the instance that aluminum rod goes through aluminum plate after contact becomes 0.7 times as small as that in the instance that aluminum rod impacts rigid plate and deforms. And the value of sliding energy in the instance that aluminum rod contacts aluminum plate becomes 0.2 times as small as that in the instance that aluminum rod contacts rigid plate. The value of total energy in case that aluminum rod impacts aluminum plate becomes 0.9 times as small as that in the case that aluminum rod impacts rigid plate.

The flash temperature distribution on the contact surfaces between cam and roller-follower mechanism was analysed numerically. The elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication pressure and film thickness were used to get the accurate analysis results. The temperature distribution was obtained by numerical integration by making use of Carslaw and Jaeger's formulation to the whole contact surfaces. The maximum flash temperature was increased with both the increasing slip ratio of the contact surface and increasing external load Profile of the temperature distribution was affected by the sliding velocity of the surface.
The droplet dynamics in a hydrophilic/hydrophobic microchannel, which is applicable to a typical proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), is studied numerically by solving the equations governing conservation of mass and momentum. The liquid-gas interface or droplet shape is determined by a level set method which is modified to treat contact angles. The matching conditions at the interface are accurately imposed by incorporating the ghost fluid approach based on a sharp-interface representation. The effects of contact angle, inlet flow velocity, droplet size and side wall on the droplet motion are investigated parametrically. Based on the numerical results, the droplet dynamics including the sliding and detachment of droplets is found to depend significantly on the contact angle. Also, a droplet removal process is demonstrated on the combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces.
