Some Pharmacological Studies with Tiliacorine, a Diphenylbisbenzylisoquinoline Alkaloid from Tiliacora racemosa

  • Tiliacora racemosa Colebr. belonging to the family Menispermaceae is the biggest store-house of diphenyl bisbenzylisoquinoline (DBBI) alkaloids. Exhaustive chemical processing of the root of T. racemosa by the application of modern separation techniques yielded a DBBI alkaloid which was identified as tiliacorine using sophisticated spectroscopic methods (UV, IR, $1^H-NMR$, Mass). Tiliacorine potentiated the sleeping time induced by standard hypnotics viz. chlorpromazine (CPZ), pentobarbitone (PB) and diazepam (DZ) in a dose dependent manner. Tiliacorine potentiated the analgesic action of standard analgesic agents viz., morphine and meperidine. It was also found to possess anti convulsive activity in the strychnine induced convulsion model.

  • Total methanol extract of Plantago asiatica seeds showed significant hepatotonic activities against animal model of hepatitis. The methanol extract was further fractionated with petroleum ether, chloroform, n-butanol and water. Among these fractions, methanol extract and water and chloroform fractions exhibited hepatonic activities, whereas petroleum ether and n-butanol fractions appeared to give rise a rather toxicity. Measurements of serum GOT, GPT and duration of sleeping time induced by hexobarbital after $CCl_4$ intoxication indicated that water fraction showed most potent activities.

반하후박탕(半夏厚朴湯)의 실험약리학적(實驗藥理學的) 연구(硏究) (Experimental Studies on Pharmacological Action of the Banhahubagtang, A Combined Preparation of Oriental Medicine)

  • The effects of the water extract of 'Banhahubagtang', the combined herbal medicine, on the low esophageal sphincter, stomach, small intestine and CNS were investigated, and the results were as follows: The hexobarbital induced sleeping time was prolonged in female mice. The convulsion induced by electric shock was suppressed and analgesic action was recognized in mice. The extract inhibited intestinal propulsion of barium sulfate in mice. The extract inhibited free acid secretion and showed remarkable suppression of gastric ulcer in rats. Relaxation induced by isoproterenol and norepinephrine in low esophageal sphincter(L.E.S.) of rabbit was potentiated by addition of the extract. In conclusion, the Banhahubagtang exhibited anticonvulsive, sedative and L.E.S. inhibitory activities. These experimental results might indicate to be coincided with the indications for neuro-esophago-stenosis, esophagitis, esophagia, gastralgia, and neurosis which are well referred to the literature of oriental medicine.

Antinociceptive and Sedative Hypnotic effect of Artemisia pallens Wall

  • The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the antinociceptive and sedative - hypnotic effect of a vacuum dried methanol extract of aerial parts of Artemisia pallens. In the tail-flick method with Swiss albino mice the methanol extract at the doses of (1500 mg/kg, 2000 mg/kg, and 2500 mg/kg) showed significant antinociceptive activity. Significant potentiation of Pentobarbitone sodium - induced sleeping time was observed in mice on co-administration of the various doses of the methanol extract of Artemisia pallens.

임금근로자의 우울관련요인: 주관적 건강과 스트레스 인지를 중심으로 (Factors Associated with Depression among Wage Earners by Subjective Health and Stress Perception)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze factors associated with depression among wage earners by subjective health and stress perception. Methods: The study subjects include 1,787 wage earners(aged 19 and older) who are currently working, using data from the 2014 National Health and Nutrition Survey. Data were analyzed using frequency test, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression. Results: Multiple regression analysis showed that perceived stress level, subjective health status, age, monthly household income, sex, marital status, average daily sleeping time, and whether type of employment was regular or non-regular were significantly related to depression. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop an appropriate mental health promotion program and to manage prevention of depression at the national level.

정규직 및 비정규직 고용형태가 건강관련 삶의 질에 미치는 영향 분석 연구 (The Effect of Regular and Temporary Employment on Health-related Quality of Life)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to identify the effect of employment type on health-related quality of life. Methods : This study used data from the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Data were analyzed with the ${\chi}^2$ test, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression. Results : There were significant statistical differences the health-related quality of life according to employment type. The health-related quality of life of temporary workers was lower than that of regular workers. The significant predictors of the health-related quality of life of regular workers were the subjective health status, stress, age, and education. The significant predictors of the health-related quality of life of temporary workers were the subjective health status, education, stress, sleeping time, and gender. Conclusions : These results suggest that employment type affects the health-related quality of life. The research on social policy is recommended to resolve health inequalities.

  • The study was carried out to evaluate the preliminary toxicity and general pharmacology of KML-IIU, a purified pectin from Korean Mistletoe (Viscum album coloratum). KML-IIU was administered intravenously to ICR mice and Spargue-Dawley rats to investigate the acute toxicity. LD50 values in mice and rats were above 30 $\mu$g/kg. KML-IIU had no effects on the general behaviors, acetic acid induced writhing syndrome, pentobarbial induced sleeping time, pentylenetetrazole induced convulsion and the change of body temperature. In addition, KML-IIU did not show any effects on digestive system and blood coagulation system.

Piperine 유도체의 합성 및 중추억제작용에 관한 연구(I) 3,4-Methylenedioxycinnamic Acid 유도체 (Syntheses and Central Nervous Depressant Activity of Piperine Derivatives(I) 3,4-methylenedioxycinnamic Acid Derivatives)

  • Piperine was reported to have a potential central nervous system (CNS) depressant activity in mice. In order to search a more active and less toxic compound than piperine and to elucidate the active group of piperine, the aromatic amides (10 compeunds) and aromatic esters (10 cempounds) of 3, 4-methylenedioxycinnamic acid were synthesized and evaluated on CNS depressant activity in comparison with piperine. The pharmacological tests conducted are as follows; (1) Acute, toxicity, (2) Antagonism against strychnine induced conduced convulsion, (3) Antagonism against maximal electrobhock seizure, (4) Rotarod test, (5) Potentiation of hexobarbital sleeping time. It was observed that 3, 4-methylendioxycinanamic acid derivatives were less toxic than piperine, and showed no significant CNS depressant activities. These facts indicate that the piperoyl group might be concerned with the pharmacological activity of piperine.

  • IY-80843, N[2-(2-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]-N'-[4-(lmidazole-4-yl)phenyl] formamidine, is a new potent $H_2-receptor$ anagonist. The potential secondary pharmacologic effects of this agent, on the central nervous and cardiovascular systems were studied. IY-80843 caused ptosis, suppression of locomotion, hypotehrmia, prolongation of sleeping time and hypotensive effects in mice, rats and dogs. These results suggest that IY-80843 affects the funcition of the central nervous and cardiovascular systems in a dose-dependent manner.

Clustering and Communications Scheduling in WSNs using Mixed Integer Linear Programming

  • We consider the problem of scheduling communications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to ensure battery preservation through the use of the sleeping mode of sensors.We propose a communication protocol for 1-hop WSNs and extend it to multi-hop WSNs through the use of a 1-hop clustering algorithm.We propose to schedule communications in each cluster in a virtual communication ring so as to avoid collisions. Since clusters are cliques, only one sensor can speak or listen in a cluster at a time, and all sensors need to speak in each of their clusters at least once to realize the communication protocol. We model this situation as a mathematical program.
