The position of the automobile seat back is very important for the neck injury in the rear-end collisions. The effects of the position have been evaluated experimentally. A sled simulator is utilized with a velocity of 33 km/h. The position is varied by the angle of seat back from 25 to 65 degrees. All the configurations of the seat are fixed except the angle. The neck injuries are calculated by the equations accepted in the industries. Also, the sled tests with other velocities are carried out for the comparison study. Using the results of the test, the effects of seat back strength are discussed to minimize the occupant neck injury in rear end collisions.
Occupant injury in rear end impact is rapidly becoming one of the most aggravating traffic safety problems with high human suffering and societal costs. Although rear end impact occurs at relatively low speed , it may cause permanent disability due to neck injuries resulting from an abrupt moment, shear force , and tension/compression force at the occipital condyles. The analysis is performed for a combined occupant-eat model response, using the SAFE(Safety Analysis for occupant crash Environment) computer program. The computational results are verified by those from sled tests. A parameter study is conducted for many physical and mechanical properties. Seat design has been performed based on the design of experiment process with respect to five parameters; seat-back upholstery stiffness, torsional stiffness of the seat-back. An orthogonal array is selected from the parameter study. A good design has been found from the analysis results based on the orthogonal array. The results show that reductions of stiffness in seat-back upholstery and joint are the most effective for preventing neck injuries.
In order to reduce the damage of life and property caused by an automobile accident, we should design new car models and safety standard with reference to the data analysis and in-depth investigation of the accident. In-depth research and analysis of the current world other than the police investigation team (GIDAS, iGLAD, NHTSA, etc.) and collect in-depth data. Going to develop a safety policy to make it much safer cars based on this data. However, the country still does not have the advantage of KIDAS data Safety Policy Direction. In KNCAP tests, there is nothing in order to protect far side passengers even if far side impact causes approximately 50% injured people. Based on DBs like KIDAS (Korean In-Depth Accident Study) and GIDAS, far side passengers got injured as much as near side passengers did. So as to protect far side passengers, KNCAP has to change the test method of side crashes. In this study, injury severities to compare with ES-2, World SID and Thor dummies and the movements of far and near side passengers, SLED TEST was used.
For years, Q1.5 (anthropomorphic test device for 1.5 years old infant) and Q3 (anthropomorphic test device for 3 years old infant) dummy protection has been improved considerably by the effort of EuroNCAP. ISOFIX strength of vehicle structure has increased and many child occupant protection tests have made child restraint system (hereafter CRS) optimized for child safety. However, from 2016, EuroNCAP changed the dummy which is used for the child occupant protection from Q1.5/Q3 to Q6/Q10 and these were also adopted in KNCAP from 2017. Therefore, a new method is required to secure the safety for older children In this research, child dummies were tested by using adult safety systems, and the different results from each adult restraint system were compared. Finally, dummies were tested with the CRS harness belt commonly used for infants, which has yielded significant result. In this research, mid-sized sedan and small SUV were used for the test. The researchers of this paper performed sled tests to correlate between the different adult safety belt system and child injury. Following the sled test, an actual vehicle test was conducted to gather the injury data of Q-dummy with the CRS harness belts. This paper will show the advantages of applying a pre-tensioner in the second row for child protection and the necessity of CRS which has its own harness belts to improve safety for older children.
The computer simulation techniques were adopted to evaluate effects of seating positions of passenger under the various accident scenarios. The baseline of computer simulation model was tunned by the sled impact tests which conducted under the upright and standard seating positions. This study shows the effect of relative velocity between occupant and struck vehicle while occupant is impacted to a front seat's seatback. Although, base on the current accident scenarios, KHST is performed well enough to protect average adult male occupants. However, Results from the tests indicate small size occupant or higher impact speed may cause sever neck and femur injuries.
The purpose of this research is to obtain and analyze dynamic responses from human volunteers for the development of the human-like mechanical or mathematical model for Korean males in automotive rear collisions. This paper focused on the introduction to a low-speed rear impact sled test involving Korean male subjects, and the accumulation of the motion of head and neck. A total of 50 dynamic rear impact sled tests were performed with 50 human volunteers, who are 30-50 year-old males. Each subject can be involved in only one case to prevent any injury in which he was exposed to the impulse that was equivalent to a low-speed rear-end collision of cars at 5-8 km/h for change of velocity, so called, ${\Delta}V$. All subjects were examined by an orthopedist to qualify for the test through the medical check-up of their necks and low backs prior to the test. The impact device is the pendulum type, tuned to simulate the crash pulse of a real vehicle. All motions and impulses were captured and measured by motion capture systems and pressure sensors on the seat. Dynamic responses of head and T1 were analyzed in two cases(5 km/h, 8 km/h) to compare with the results in the previous studies. After the experiments, human subjects were examined to check up any change in the post medical analysis. As a result, there was no change in MRI and no injury reported. Six subjects experienced a minor stiffness on their back for no more than 2 days and got back to normal without any medical treatment.
Occupant protection performance in frontal crashes has been developed and assessed for mainly front seat occupants over many years, and in recent years protection of rear seat occupants has also been extensively discussed. Unlike the front seats, the rear seats are often occupied by children seated in rear-facing or forward - facing child restraint systems, or booster seats. In the ENCAP, child occupant protection assessments using 18-month-old(P1.5) and 3-year-old(P3) test dummies in the rear seat have already been changed to new type of 18-month-old (Q1.5)and 3-year-old(Q3) test dummies. In addition, ENCAP are scheduled with the development and introduction of test dummies of 6-year-old (Q6) and 10.5-year-old children(Q10) starting 2016. In KNCAP, Q6 and Q10 child dummies will be introduced in 2017 as well. Automobile manufacturers need to develop safety performance for new child dummies closely. In this paper, we focused on Q6 and Q10 child dummies sitting in child restraint system. Offset frontal crash tests were conducted using two types of test dummies, Q6 and Q10 child dummies, positioned in the rear seat. Q6 and Q10 were used to compare dummy kinematics in rear seating positions between Q6 behind the driver's seat and Q10 behind the front passenger's seat. The full vehicle sled test results of both dummies were conducted with different restraint systems. It showed that several injury and image data was collected as the result of the full vehicle sled test. Based on the results of these investigations, this paper describes which factor is most important and combination is the best performance when evaluating rear seat occupant protection for Q6 and Q10 child dummies.

A hybrid type automotive drivers seat was invented with new concepts for the reduction of weight and manufacturing costs. Fundamental studies were performed to determine the basic geometry of reinforcing support. A prototypical design was provided by the manufacturer considering compatibility with other parts. Several structural analyses simulating various crash situations were performed and modifications were continued until a final design was reached. A sample product was manufactured and sled crash tests were performed to verify the safety of the seat. Comparisons of test results with the previous model and a seat from another company proved safety performances to be superior.
The safety analysis becomes very essential in the crash environment with the growth of automobile industry. Recently, an airbag system is required to protect the occupant. The effects of an airbag can be evaluated exactly from the barrier or sled test which is quite expensive. The airbag system in a passenger car is analyzed with the occupant analysis program. The modeling of the passenger car including an airbag is established and the results are verified by comparisons with real crash tests. However, the solution of an airbag design can not be obtained easily with the conventional method such as an optimization due to the nonlinearity and complexity of the problem. An iterative design algorithm using the orthogonal array is proposed to overcome the difficulties. The design trend of an airbag is recommended to minimize the injury of an occupant with the proposed design algorithm and the results are discussed.
