  • A number of highway projects are in progress in Korea to accommodate increasing transportation demands. As the highway route becomes more complex, some projects include tunneling through unconsolidated sedimentary rock. Since an unconsolidated sedimentary rock mainly consists of rock and ground mass, the behavior and characteristics in unconsolidated sedimentary rock tunnel are quite different from typical rock tunnel. However, construction case histories and rock classifications method on unconsolidated sedimentary rock tunnel had not been developed or studied domestically. Consequently the case studies and rock classification system for unconsolidated sedimentary rock are required to better understand its behavior for tunneling. In this study, rock mass classification method is proposed to identify unconsolidated sedimentary rock based on point load and slake durability tests. Based on this, the proposed method of unconsolidated sedimentary rock can be applied well through comparisons with the results of convergence measurement.

  • The main objective of this study is to suggest a new assessment method of the influence of weathering due to salt crystallization on the engineering property of rock. For this purpose, various sources of salt and salt crystallization were investigated, and artificially accelerated weathering tests were carried out. In natural envionment, weathering rate is very slow and weathering process involves complex mechanisms. Therefore artificial weathering test is essential for systematic analysis. Arificial weathering test is defined as test which controls weathering rate and agents by controlling arificial environmental condition. In this study, salt crystallization test was selected among various artificial weathering test methods, for its important role in weathering. Change of various stone properties were detexted. The change of physical properties by salt crystallization were observed as follows : 72% in Brazilian tensile strength and 72% in Slake durability. These results explain the importance of salt crystallization in the mechanical behaviour and properties of stone.

  • In this study, effective porosity measurement, electron microscope (SEM) observation, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), slaking, swelling, and unconfined compression strength according to water immersion were analyzed to evaluate the properties of mudstone with high porosity in Pohang. As a result of the test for 16 square samples (5 cm), the effective porosity was 14.67% on average, higher than porosity of general mudstone, and electron microscope observation confirmed that the porosity was actually high. As a result of X-ray diffraction analysis, the swelling clay mineral content was 2.3~4.1%, which was lower than the results of previous studies in Pohang. The slake durability index was 37.73~87.73%, showing low to medium durability, which was lower than the results of previous studies. It was confirmed that the swelling property rapidly expanded to 1.79~1.82% of maximum swelling strain in the major axis direction for 30 minutes. As the properties of decreasing the unconfined compression strength according to water immersion, the samples rapidly weathered after 10 minutes of water immersion, and the strength decreased. It was confirmed that the results of previous studies related to mudstone in Pohang were different. This is judged to be due to the high porosity of mudstone in study.

  • Waste fills resulting from coal mining should consist of large, free-draining sedimentary rocks fragments. The successful performance of these fills is related to the strength and durability of the individual rock fragments. When fills are made of shale fragments, some fragments will be durable and some will degrade into soil particles resulting from slaking and inter-particle point loads. The degraded material fills the voids between the intact fragments, and results in settlement. A laboratory program with point load and slake durability tests as well as thin section examination of sixty-eight shale samples from the Appalachian region of the United States revealed that pore micro-geometry has a major influence on degradation. Under saturated and unsaturated conditions, the shales absorb water, and the air in their pores is compressed, breaking the shales. This breakage was more pronounced in shales with smooth pore boundaries and having a diameter equal to or smaller than 0.060 mm. If the pore walls were rough, the air-pressure breaking mechanism was not effective. However, pore roughness (measured by the fractal dimension) had a detrimental effect on point load resistance. This study indicated that the optimum shales to resist both slaking as well as point loads are those that have pores with a fractal dimension equal to 1.425 and a diameter equal to or smaller than 0.06 mm.

  • We have collected shale specimens from the Pungam Basin in Kangwon province and investigated change of physical properties by freezing and thawing in water as well as in acidic fluid. The temperature range was $-20{\pm}2^{\circ}C\~15{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. Specimens were frozen for 12 hours and thawed in water for 8 hours. Then, they were saturated in the vacuum chamber for 4 hours to make specimens fully saturated. This procedure was 1 cycle. We have measured absorption, ultrasonic velocity, shore hardness, slake durability and uniaxial compressive strength at every 5th cycles. The physical properties increased or decreased as freezing and thawing cycles increased. Uniaxial compressive strength decreased by 0.40MPa per cycle in water and by 0.48MPa in acidic fluid. Elastic constant also decreased by 0.21GPa per cycle in water and by 0.30GPa in acidic fluid. Absorption increased by $0.29\%$ and $0.37\%$ per cycle in water and acidic fluid, respectively. These results indicate that decrease in uniaxial compressive strength, elastic constant and absorption by freezing and thawing in acidic fluid is more rapid than in water. Ultrasonic velocities, shore hardness and slake durability show no differences in water and acidic fluid. When we compared our results with the temperatures in the Hongchon during the winter season, $6\~12$ cycles may be equivalent to 1 year.

  • Engineers should take great care of characterizing the engineering properties of mudrock, because the uncemented mudrock can be considered as a hard rock in appearance. Therefore, the mudrock samples obtained from the cut slope in Gyeongki-do were tested to evaluate the strength characteristics of uncemented mudrock in this study. The performed tests are index properties, slake durability, and swelling tests for the classification of the mudrock for engineering practice. To evaluate the effect of water on the engineering properties of the uncemented mudrock, resonant column, triaxial compression and direct shear tests with various water contents were performed. With the increasing water contents, stiffness at very small to small strain region and the cohesion value of the strength parameters decrease. Based on the test results, engineers should take great care of evaluating the engineering properties of uncemented mudrock.

  • This study is as for shale that attract recently geotechnical engineer more and more. like sedimentary rocks and metamorpic rocks, shales have many problem with anisotropy for stength and deformation and they have many problems with quick weathering progress and differential weathering of alternate bedding. In foreign countries, many renowned schalors, like Jaeger(1960),McLamore,Gray(1967),Donath(1972),Nova(1980),Hoek&Brown(1980),Ranamurthy(1985), have already studied for a variety of characteristic and announced high level results of their studies. In domestic also, there are many scholars who have announced high level research papers for shale. this study is a part of these stream. and this study not only analyzed strength anisotropy characteristic along with direction of testing(two-direction) by using point-load test(log-log method) but also compared uniaxial strength between the maximum saturated and dried condition. In this study, we also conducted slaking test. these results of slaking test show weathering characteristic of shales. also, we made the most of field data that obtained during slope stability project and we noticed that RQD measured in the field is much differ from drilled core RQD. In order to come close two different value or access to reality, we suggest new RQD method that artificially reduce RQD by separating core with light hand force.

  • The six grades weathering system is normally used in weathered rock classification. In this study. fresh and weathered rock block of grade I to V were sampled in Jang-soo ana but samples of the grade VI was omitted from this study. The variation quantities of chemical weathering indices with weathering degree are smaller than those of physical and mechanical properties. Increase of Weathering degree is well indicated by physical and mechanical properties such as strength, hardness, ultrasonic velocity and slake durability result. Especially, absorption and porosity ratio is a good indicator. As weathering proceeds. a number of the cracks affect the rock deformation. Therefore, stress-strain curves of weathered rocks in unconfined state are quite different from ones of fresh rocks.

  • This study is to clarify the comparative relationship and mechanical anisotropy of granite distributed in the Nam-weon on the subject of weathered rock mass sea water surroundings. Artificial weathering test is defined as a test, which controls the weathering rate and agents by controlling the weathering rate and agents by artificial environmental of salt water. Increased weathering degree is large indicated by weathering salt water, such as apparent specific gravity, absorption, porosity, uniaxial compression strength, P-wave velocity, slake durability, shore hardness, indirect tensile strength(brazilian test) and cohesion were measured. As the Weathering salt water proceeds, cracks develope increasingly. A number the cracks affect the rock deformation. Therefore, stress-strain curve of weathered salt water rock in one confined state are quite differ from weathered fresh water rock those. A reason of their deformation type is the formation of micro-cracks and potential porosity caused by artificial weathering test.
