The response mechanism of simply supported two-way reinforced concrete (RC) slabs under fire was numerically studied from the view of stress redistribution using the finite element software ABAQUS. Results show that: (1) Simply supported two-way RC slabs undergo intense stress redistribution, and their responses show four stages, namely elastic, elastic-plastic, plastic and tensile membrane stages. There is no cracking in the fire area of the slabs until the tensile membrane stage. (2) The inverted arch effect and tensile membrane effect improve the fire resistance of the two-way slabs. When the deflection is L/20, the slab is in an inverted arch effect state, and the slab still has a good deflection reserve. The deformation rate of the slab in the tensile membrane stage is smaller than that in the elastic-plastic and plastic stages. (3) Fire resistance of square slabs is better than that of rectangular slabs. Besides, increasing the reinforcement ratio or slab thickness improves the fire resistance of the slabs. However, an increase of cover thickness has little effect on the fire resistance of two-way slabs. (4) Compared with one-way slabs, the time for two-way slabs to enter the plastic and tensile cracking stage is postponed, and the deformation rate in the plastic and tensile cracking stage is also slowed down. (5) The simply supported two-way RC slabs can satisfy with the requirements of a class I fire resistance rating of 90 min without additional fire protection.
In this research, a precast concrete slab with two ribs was developed to increase the stiffness of slab. The developed precast slabs are allowed to cast concrete for multi stories and to construct concrete slabs without any props. Seven concrete slabs were tested to investigate the behavior of the developed precast slabs. Test results indicated that the developed slabs showed a similar behavior with the slabs without ribs.
Prestressed prefabricated hollow core concrete slabs with spans of 5 m and 10 m are commonly used since last century and still in service due to the advantage of construction convenience and durability. However, the end slabs are regularly subjected to cracks at the top and fail with brittleness due to the asymmetric boundary conditions. To better maintain such widely used type of hollow core slabs, the effect of asymmetric constraint in the end slabs are systematically studied through detailed nonlinear finite element analyses and experimental data. Experimental tests of slabs with four prestressed tendons and seven prestressed tendons with different boundary conditions were conducted. Results observe three failure modes of the slabs: the bending failure mode, shear and torsion failure mode, and transverse failure mode. Detailed nonlinear finite element models are developed to well match the failure modes and to reveal potential damage scenarios with asymmetric boundary conditions. Recommendations regarding ultimate capacity of the slabs with asymmetric boundary conditions are made to ensure a safe and rational design of prestressed concrete hollow slabs for short span bridges.
A 4-story reinforced concrete structure built above an underground parking garage shows some slab deflections, and the deflections of the concrete floor slabs are proposed to be alleviated by the application of light-weight topping material in conjunction with localized strengthening of the slabs. The application of light-weight concrete topping on the existing slab has been simulated and its performance to anticipated loads has been analyzed. The application of light-weight topping material imposes additional weight on the exiting floor slabs. This added weight on the existing slabs causes over-stressing of the slabs. This over-stressing can be alleviated by enhancing the load carrying capacity of the existing slabs. Additional load carrying capacity in the existing slabs can be developed by localized strengthening of the slabs utilizing techniques such as the application of fiber-reinforced composites on the bottom surface of the slabs, and application of fiber-reinforced composites adequately complements the capacity of the existing slabs to bear the additional load imposed by light-weight leveling material. Additional moments in the beam and columns induced by the application of the light-weight topping material were tabulated and compared with capacity. The moment D/C ratios of the beam and columns are well the range of acceptable limits, and the beam and columns are not overstressed by the application of the surcharge.
This paper reports the testing of concrete slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed concrete prisms(PCP) on the flexural behavior. Four concrete slabs were tested, a reference slab reinforced with steel bars, and three slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed concrete prisms (PCP). All slabs were made with dimensions of 600mm in width, 2200mm in length and 150 in depth. All concrete slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed concrete prisms(PCP) exhibited CFRP bar rupture failure mode. It was shown that the application of the CFRP prestressed prisms can limit service load deflections and crack width, the increased level of prestress in the CFRP prestressed prism positively affected the maximum crack width. The deflection of concrete slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed prisms decreased as prestress in the CFRP prestressed prism increased.
In the present study the behavior of fire and the residual strength of fire-ignited RC slabs are investigated by experimental tests and numerical simulations. The fire tests of RC slabs were carried out in a furnace using the ISO 834 standard fire. The load capacity of the cooled RC slabs that were not loaded during the fire tests was evaluated by additional 3 point bending tests. The influence of the proportion of PP (polypropylene) fibers in the RC slabs on the structural behavior of the RC slabs after the fire loading was investigated. The results of the fire tests showed that the maximum temperature of concrete with PP fiber was lower than that of concrete without PP fiber. As the concrete was heated, the ultimate compressive strength decreased and the ultimate strain increased. The load-deflection relations of RC slabs after fire loading were compared by using existing stress-strain-temperature models. The comparison between the numerical analysis and the experimental tests showed that some numerical analyses were reliable and therefore, can be applied to evaluate the ultimate load of RC slabs after fire loading. The ultimate load capacity after cooling down the RC slabs without PP fiber showed a considerable reduction from that of the RC slabs with PP fiber.
The fire resistance performance of 2 RC slabs after exposure to the ISO-834 fire standard without loading has been experimentally investigated. A Comparison is made of the fire resistance performance between RC slabs without PP(polypropylene) fibers and RC slabs with PP fibers. From the fire test results, the presence of PP fibers in RC slabs can reduce spalling and enhance their fire resistance. Until now, the determination of fire resistance of reinforced concrete(RC) slabs has essentially been based on tabulated data. According to ACI 216 code and EUROCODE 2, the design of concrete structures is essentially based on tabulated data for appropriate concrete cover and various fire durations. From the comparison between fire test results and codes, current fire design provisions of codes such as the ACI 216 and the EUROCODE 2 are unconservative for estimating mechanical properties of RC slabs at elevated temperatures.
In this study, the serviceability of Waffle shaped(WAS) and Double-Tee(DT) precast concrete slabs was evaluated and compared based on the vertical acceleration magnitude induced by walking and heel drop loads. Tests were conducted for practical building structures (a shopping mall in Hanam) of which floor systems used WAS and DT slabs. Natural frequencies of the slabs were similar to those obtained by using analytical models. The measured acceleration level was evaluated by vertical floor acceleration criteria presented by ISO-2631, AIJ(1991, Japan), and a previous study regarding floor vibration limit. Test results showed that both WAS and DT slabs satisfied all the criteria and the maximum acceleration level of WAS slabs was lower than that of DT slabs.
The structural behavior of reinforced concrete slabs strengthened by glass fiber reinforced plastic-panels experimentally investigated. The experimental variables are strengthening length, strengthening width, and pre-crack existence. The pre-cracked slabs are initially loaded to 70 percent of ultimate flexural capacity and subsequently repaired with GFRP-Panels bonded to the tension face of the slabs. Five one-way slabs were tested to failure. The main failure mode of strengthened slabs is separation failure by crack propagation from load point section to end of plate. The behavior of strengthened slabs is represented by a maximum load, load-deflection curves an load-strain curves.
