To dale, lots of types of tuned mass dampers are developed and investigated to reduce dynamic responses of a structure due to various causes. In this study, control performance of semi-active tuned mass damper(STMD), that can change the damping of tuned mass damper in real time based on structural responses, was investigated with respect to various types of excitation employing numerical simulation. Skyhook control algorithm was used to appropriately modulate the damping ratio of semi-active damper that composes STMD. The control effectiveness of a STMD under harmonic and random excitation were evaluated using a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure in comparison with a conventional passive tuned mass damper (TMD). The robustness of a STMD and a passive TMD were compared along with the variation of the mass of a SDOF structure. The control performance of STMD using magnetorheological (MR) damper was also investigated in this study. Based on the numerical studios, it was shown that the control effectiveness of the STMD was significantly superior to that of a passive TMD with respect to harmonic and random excitation.

In military vehicles moving over poor roads, severe vibration of the chassis can damage internal components. Currently, many studies have focused on active and semi-active suspensions to reduce the vibration of the chassis. In this study, a vibration reduction technique is suggested by applying a unique rotating suspension structure. SH-ADD, a type of modified Skyhook, was selected as a controller for vibration reduction. A random ISO class E road was selected as the driving road. The simulation was performed using ADAMS Control and Matlab Simulink. The control result was compared with the RMS acceleration with a focus on the cumulative fatigue of the internal equipment.

This paper presents design and performance evaluation of electro-rheological(ER) shock absorber for electronic control suspension(ECS). In order to achieve this goal, a cylindrical ER shock absorber that satisfies design specifications for a mid-sized commercial passenger vehicle is designed and manufactured to construct ER suspension system for ECS. After experimentally evaluating dynamic characteristics of the manufactured ER shock absorber, the quarter-vehicle ER suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the ER shock absorber is constructed in order to investigate the ride comfort and driving stability. After deriving the equations of the motion for the proposed quarter-vehicle ER suspension system, the skyhook controller is implemented for the realization of quarter-vehicle ER suspension system. In order to present control performance of ER shock absorber for ECS, ride comfort and driving stability characteristics such as vertical acceleration and tire deflection are experimentally evaluated under various road conditions and presented in both time and frequency domain.

This paper presents control and response characteristics of a continuously variable ER(electrorheological) damper for small-sized vehicles. The ER damper is devised and its governing equation of motion is derived from the bond graph model. The field-dependent yield shear stresses are distilled from experimental investigation on the Bingham property of the ER fluid. The distilled data are incorporated into the governing system model and, on the basis of this model, an appropriate size of the ER damper is manufactured. After evaluating the field-dependent damping performance of the proposed ER damper, the skyhook control algorithm is formulated to achieve desired level of the damping force. The controller is then experimentally implemented and control characteristics of the ER damper are presented in order to demonstrate superior controllability of the damping force. In addition, response characteristics of the damping force with respect to the electric field with fast on-off frequency are provided to show the feasibility of practical application.

In this paper, the nonlinear damping force model is made to identify the properties of the ER damper using higher order spectrum. The higher order spectral analysis is used to investigate the nonlinear frequency coupling phenomena with the damping force signal according to the sinusoidal excitation of the damper. Also, this paper presents an inverse model of the ER damper, i.e., the model can predict the required voltage so that the ER damper can produce the desired force for the requirement of vibration control of vehicle suspension systems. The inverse model has been constructed by using piecewise linear damping force model. In this paper, the fuzzy logic control based on heuristic knowledge is combined with the skyhook control. And it is simulated for a quarter car model. The acceleration of the sprung mass is included in the premise part of the fuzzy rules to reduce the vertical acceleration RMS value of the sprung mass. Then scaling factors and membership functions are tuned using genetic algorithm to obtain optimal performance.

The equipments mounted on guided-missile undertake heavy vibrational disturbance. Sometimes the equipments mounted on guided-missile go wrong so that the guided-missile flies over unintended place. For the vibration isolation of the equipments mounted on guided-missile, active vibration control was performed. In the case of active vibration technique, the stiffness matrix and the mass matrix are derived based on FEM (ANSYS5.0). Model reduction was carried out and, as a result, we got 7 DOF mass and stiffness matrix. For the sake of FEM model identification, modal experiment was carried out. With the help of Sensitivity Analysis, the natural frequencies of FEM were tuned to those of Experiment. In this work, the Sky Hook and the LQG control theory were adopted for v iteration control using stacked piezoactuator. Experiments were performed with changing excitation frequency from 10 Hz upto 200 Hz and we got frequency response function of guided-missile equipments. The magnitude of 3rd mode of guided-missile equipments is 8.6 % that of Uncontrolled in Skyhook controller and is 3.4 % that of uncontrolled in LQG controller.
A fuzzy hybrid control technique using a semi-active tuned mass damper (STMD) has been proposed in this study for mitigation of wind induced motion of a tall building. For numerical simulation, a third generation benchmark is employed for a wind-excited 76-story building. A magnetorheological (MR) damper is used to compose an STMD. The proposed control technique employs a hierarchical structure consisting of two lower-level semi-active controllers (sub-controllers) and a higher-level fuzzy hybrid controller. Skyhook and groundhook control algorithms are used as sub-controllers. When a wind load is applied to the benchmark building, each sub-controller provides different control commands for the STMD. These control commands are appropriately combined by the fuzzy hybrid controller during realtime control. Results from numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed fuzzy hybrid control technique can effectively reduce the STMD motion as well as building responses compared to the conventional hybrid controller. In addition, it is shown that the control performance of the STMD is superior to that of the sample TMD and comparable to an active TMD, but with a significant reduction in power consumption.

This paper presents vibration control performance of a passenger vehicle installed with the mixed-mode type ER engine mounts. The performance is evaluated via hardware-in-the-loop-simulation(HILS) method. As a first step, a dynamic model of a vehicle featuring the ER engine mounts is formulated by taking into account the engine excitation forces. A new type of the fuzzy skyhook controller is then established in order to control both engine and body vibrations. This is accomplished by adopting a weighting parameter between two performance criteria which is to be determined from the fuzzy algorithm. Vertical displacement and acceleration of the engine mount obtained from the HILS method are provided in the frequency domain. In addition, vibration control performance between the conventional hydraulic engine mount and the proposed engine mount is compared in the time and frequency domains.

In this paper, an active vibration control with the use of an air-cell seat for passenger cars is investigated. The roles of the air-cell inserted between the polyurethane foam of the seat and seat cover are first to extend the seat's capability to adopt various shapes of human body and to improve the ride-comfort against road disturbances. The air-cell seat is modeled as a 1-d.o.f. spring-damper system. Because an exact modeling of the air-cell itself is alomost impossible, its dynamic characteristics are analyzed through experiments. A road-adaptive gain-scheduled sky-hook control for the air-cell seat system is proposed. The skyhook gains are scheduled in such a way that the acceleration level transmitted to human body on various road conditions is minimized. Simulations and experimental results are provided.
In this paper, we apply sliding control law to a nonlinear electro-hydraulic suspension system. The force the actuator must track is determined by the skyhook control law and the desired force value varies according to the road situation. The road frequencies can inform us of the current road situation. Detecting the road frequencies, we use the Fourier Transform.
