스컬법에 의한 루틸 단결정 성장에 관한 연구 (A study on the growth of rutile single crystal by skull melting method)

  • 초기 RF유도가열을 위해 Ti 금속링을 사용하여 스컬법에 의해 루릴 단결정을 성장시켰다. 성장시킨 단결정은 ${\varnothing}55.5{\times}1.0mm$의 wafer로 가공하였으며,$1300^{\circ}C$에서 15시간까지 대기중에서 열처리 하여 $\lambda=200~25000nm$의 범위에서 투광도를 비교하였다.

  • Myxomas are rare benign tumors that originate from mesenchymal tissue. They usually develop in the atrium of the heart, the skin, subcutaneous tissue, or bone. Involvement of the skull base with an intracranial extension is very rare and not well-described in the literature. We report a rare case of primary intracranial ossifying myxoma arising from the anterior skull base and mimicking a huge chondrosarcoma, and we review the relevant literature.

A Case of Calvarial Hemangioma in Cranioplasty Site

  • It is not uncommon for hemangiomas to occur in the calvarium, accounting for about 10% of the benign skull tumors. A 46-year-old man was presented with a palpable scalp mass on the left parietal region. Past medical history indicated that he had undergone cranioplasty 25 years prior due to a depressed skull fracture suffered from a traffic accident. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed mixed signal intensity mass on T1 -and T2- weighted images pushing a linear signal void lesion outward in the left parietal region. After total surgical removal along with cranioplasty, he was discharged without neurological deficits. Histological examination of the surgical specimen revealed a cavernous hemangioma. A skull hemangioma occurring at the site of a cranioplasty has not yet been reported. Therefore, authors report this case in combination with a pertinent literature review.

  • The congenital head anomalies are most often used to describe defects in the eyes, mouth, nose, skull, and or brain. The faulty embryogenesis most likely found to be associated with abnormal genetic or epigenetic causes during pregnancy. Eventually it leads to congenital anomalies. Rabbit-headed Lamb (RH) is a disorder in sheep breeding that is characterized by some deformities in the head and the face. A dead -day old- crossbred white Najdi lamb with a deformed face and head was reported to be born in the current case. The external and physical examination revealed a deformed skull and facial region with a unilateral eye, fused mouth, pig-like nose, and patent skull with the brain coming out from left eye orbit. Additionally, the lamb was very skinny with unusual long extremities. This is the first report of this syndrome that describes such deformities in a stillbirth Najdi breed lamb.

Delayed Tension Pneumocephalus Caused by Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt

  • The authors describe a rare case of tension pneumocephalus, caused by ventriculoperitoneal[V-P] shunting for communicating hydrocephalus. The patient had a history of a right frontal skull fracture and pneumocephalus after a traffic accident five months prior to the present presentation of gait disturbance and memory impairment. A CT scan showed hydrocephalus and a V-P shunt was put in place. On the fourth day after surgery, the mental status of the patient gradually deteriorated due to a tension pneumocephalus; this was treated by repairing a fistula in the frontal sinus and a dural defect. The patient's mental status improved and symptoms were completely recovered. We report a case of tension pneumocephalus following V-P shunt for hydrocephalus in a patient who sustained a right frontal skull fracture.

Cerebellar Ganglioglioma

  • The location of ganglioglioma (GG) within the infratentorial compartment is unusual. The authors report a rare case of GG in the cerebellar hemisphere. A 12-year-old boy suffered from headache and gait disturbance. Neuroimaging studies demonstrated a large enhancing cerebellar mass with cystic components compressing the forth ventricle. After complete resection of the tumor, the patient became symptom free. Histological examination on the tumor disclosed glial cells and dysplastic ganglion cells. Although it is a rare tumor, in the appropriate clinical setting, a GG should be considered in the presence of a cerebellar mass with both solid and cystic components on magnetic resonance images in children.

  • Understanding the development of a skull deformity requires an understanding of the normal morphogenesis of the cranium. Craniosynostosis is the premature, pathologic ossification of one or more cranial sutures leading to skull deformities. A review of the English medical literature using textbooks and standard search engines was performed to gather information about the prenatal development and growth of the cranial vault of the neurocranium. A process of morphogenic sequencing begins during prenatal development and growth, continues postnatally, and contributes to the basis for the differential manner of growth of cranial vault bones. This improved knowledge might facilitate comprehension of the pathophysiology of craniosynostosis.

변색효과 cubic zirconia의 단결정 성장과 특성평가 (Single crystal growth and characterization of changeable colored cubic zirconia)

  • 광원에 따라 색상이 변화하는 cubic zirconia 단결정을 skull melting 법으로 성장하였다. Co와 Nd에 의해서 황색 영역의 강한 흡수가 일어나며, Fe에 의해 보라색 영역의 흡수가 일어남에 따라 광원이 형광등에서 백열등으로 변화할 때 청-녹색에서 적-자색으로 변화가 발생한다. 첨가물에 의해서 뿐만 아니라 yttria 함량과 열처리 조건 변화에 의해서도 결정의 색이 변화하였다.

  • The author has evaluated the panoramic image clarity of the midfacial anatomic structures in dry skull according to the skull position. The radiopaque markers were attached to the anatomic structures: infraorbial rim, upper and lower borders of zygomatic arch, pterygomaxillary fissure, lateral pterygoid plate, pyriform aperture of nasal cavity, lateral wall of maxilla, orbital floor, infraorbital foramen, and nasal floor. Position of the skull were divided into four groups. standard, 25mm forward, chin-down, chin-up position. The results were as follows: 1. The pyriform aperture of nasal cavity, lateral wall of the maxilla, orbital floor, infraorbital foramen and nasal floor did net cast any discernible image. 2. Nearly all images of midfacial structures were blurred in the chin-up position. 3. The forward position provided good visualization of the maxillary sinus. 4. The chin-down position provided good visualization of the zygomatic arch, pterygomaxillary fissue, and lateral pterygoid plate.

  • Hamangiopericytoma, first described by Stout & Murray in 1942, is a rare vascular tumor composed of spindle-shaped or rounded cells proliferating around endothelial lined capillaries. These proliferating cells were belived to arise from the pericytes of Zimmerman. Histologically, this tumor demonstrates great variability and clinical course cannot be predicted from the histological appearance. Head and Neck hemangiopericytoma appears to have a lower grade malignancy with frequent local recurrency and metastasis, therefore, aggressive surgical therapy should be the treatment of choice. We experienced a case of hemangiopericytoma occurred in the right skull base at submastoideal and suboccipital area presenting as neck mass in upper occipital triangle in a 42 years old female patient and we report it with a review of literatures.
