  • The purpose of this research was to ascertain the optimum rear slit length of tight skirts in terms of comfort and appearance. The typical measurements of tight skirts on current market were recorded and a questionnaire survey of women in their twenties was conducted in order to find out the current conditions of the skirts and specific complaints about motion restrictions. Just over half the respondents (50.4%) reported that they had experienced damage to the slit usually when they were stepping on a bus and also walking and running. The clothing test showed that the slit length increased as the motion went from "walking" to "going up stairs", and to "stepping on a bus" In addition the slit length significantly decreased as the hem circumference of skirt became wider. On the basis of those results, a wearing test, evaluating sensual comfort and appearance, was also conducted and the results showed that the slit length of 385mm was most prefered.

  • In this paper, the effects of a skirt deformation on the responses of an Air Cushion Vehicle in waves are investigated. The air in the bag and in the plenum chamber is assumed to be compressible and to have a uniform instantaneous pressure distribution in each volume. The free surface deformation is determined in the framework of linear potential theory by replacing the cushion pressure with the pressure patch moving uniformly with an oscillating strength. And the bag-finger skirt is assumed to be deformed due to the pressure disturbance while its surface area remained constant. The restoring force and moment due to the deformation of bag-finger skirt from the equilibrium shape is included in the equations of hearse and pitch motions. The numerical results of motion responses due to various ratios of the bag and cushion pressure or bag-to-finger depth ratios are shown.

  • This study compared the flared skirts on 3D simulation and in real to show diverse forms in women's clothing depending on the body's gait and motion. By finding the problems, we suggested the possible methods for utilizing the 3D simulation in the clothing industry. First, the 3D simulation of flared skirts showed similar forms of appearance according to the flare length and volume. However, virtually formed drape shape was even in size and spacing, whereas it was not even in real. Second, according to the results of appearance test on the length and flare volume at $90^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$, both real and 3D simulation skirts were evaluated to have outstanding appearances regardless of the skirt length. However, as the flares volume increased, the skirts with longer length were evaluated to have superior appearances compared to the skirts of shorter length. Third, it showed higher resemblance between the real and virtual simulation, when the skirt had less flare and as the skirt length shortened. However, it showed greater difference between the real and virtual simulation when flare volume and length increased. The length and volume of the skirt and the physical properties of the material are predicted to be different between the real and virtual simulation. However, they usually are similar in forms, so it is believed possible to use for predicting the design's silhouette or the feel when it is worn. This method can be applied on internet shopping malls, which can possibly reduce unnecessary time and expenses.

  • This paper describes a simulation of secondary motion of piston assemblies using PISDYN by Ricardo. Motions of the piston, pin, rod and skirt are separately calculated, by integrating equations of motion for individual components and dynamic degrees of freedom. The effects of engine speed at full load and pin offsets on the piston assembly secondary motions, forces and friction were investigated in parametric study for 4-cylinder gasoline engine. Results show that lateral displacement and friction loss of the piston increase as a function of engine speed. The lateral motion of the piston is affected by the change in pin offset. The minimum friction loss for the condition of 4800rpm WOT occurs at a pin offset of 1.6mm.

  • This study as one of a series of systematic studies about dancing costumes will compare the costumes of the middle age with their normal style of dress. In brief, this study wants people to know about middle a9e dancing costumes and understand the culture in the middle ages. It was found that people's everyday clothes in the middle age such as Surcot. Surcot-ouvert, Pourpoint, Houppelande were used as dancing costumes. They were, however. changed from the public's clothes which were tight and long. Rather than wearing costume over others. dancers wore costumes which had slits on skirt or sleeves to increase motion. With the Wild Man of the Wood's which only nobles used for their dancing costumes. costumers highlighted the beauty of human body There were various costume materials used in the middle ages like silk. cotton fabrics, linen or brocade. These materials were used for Surcot and Pourpoint as dancing costumes. The naturalness of nature or geometric patterns also was expressed on the costumes. Further about those patterns, because the development of stained glass, vivid colors were used especially red, light green, blue etc. As for the hair styles used, dancers let their hair down and put a jeweled crown over their hair. In summation. dancers wore the same clothes that normal People did, but the costumes were different depending on social status and gender. The costumes of ordinary people's were based upon ordinary clothes that moved and emphasized the dynamic motion. On the other side, the court dancers' costumes were very fancy. symbolizing a measurement of nobles' from wealth and authority. as well as an expression of a sense of beauty, The main features of middle ages follows. : To emphasize vitality, there were long slits on the side of skirt. Hair decorations and jewels are more used than in the ancient age's. To hide a dancer's social status. they could use a mask. Wild Man of the Wood's was used for the body makeup. All these features of the dancing costumes must contribute to the progress of the dance in the middle age's.

  • In order to evaluate the performance of the floating wave power, which is an axisymmetric oscillating water column type, linearized free surface boundary condition considering the influence of PTO (power takeoff) was derived and a finite element numerical model was established. Numerical experiments were carried out by varying cylinder length, skirt length, and depth of water, which are design parameters that can change the resonance of water column in cylinder and heave resonance of the float, which is considered to affect the power generation efficiency. Finally, the basic data necessary for the optimum design of the power generation system were obtained. As a result, the efficiency of the power generation system is dominated by the heave motion resonance of the float rather than the water column resonance in the cylinder, and the resonance condition for the heave motion can be changed efficiently by attaching the skirt to the outside of the buoy.

  • This paper summarizes the results of the investigations performed by the authors for a number of years on the performance of oil fences in currents and waves. The leakage inception velocity of currents, the wave-exciting motion of fences and the deformation of the fence skirt due to currents are investigated. The results show that improvement of the fence performance is necessary in order to utilize the oil fences as an effective containing device for spilt oils in ocean environments. As an approach toward improving the fence effectiveness, tandem fences in currents are investigated. It was found that an appropriate deployment of tandem fences of identical configuration could significantly improve the oil containment capability.

  • The hydrodynamic characteristics of amphibious assault vehicles are investigated using commercial CFD code, STAR-CCM+. Resistance performances of a displacement-type vehicle and a semi-planing type vehicle are analyzed in calm water. The self-propelled model is also computed for the semi-planing type vehicle. All computations are performed using an overset mesh system and a RANS based flow-solver coupled with a two-degree of freedom equations of motion. A moving reference frame is applied to simulate revolutions of impeller blades for a waterjet propulsion system. Grid dependency tests are performed to evaluate discretization errors for the mesh systems. The numerical analysis results are compared with the experimental results obtained from model tests. It is shown that RANS is capable of investigating the resistance and self-propulsion characteristics of high-speed amphibious assault vehicles. It is also found that a fully covered side skirt, which is covering tracks, reduces resistance and stern trim, besides increasing propulsive efficiency.
