  • This study presents the numerical analysis of natural convection of a micro- environments with air permeability in the clothing air-layer. As a numerical model the clothing air layer of shoulder and arm were adopted. Finite volume method for two-dimensional laminar flow was used for the analysis of flow and thermal characteristics of velocity, temperature and concentration in the air layer between body and clothing. As temperature boundary conditions, a body skin has a high temperature with $34^{\circ}C$ and the environmental temperatures are 5, 15 and $25^{\circ}C$ for various permeability coefficients. The distributions of concentration, temperature and velocity are shown that two large cells form at horizontal and vertical air layer, respectively. As the temperature difference between body skin and environment decreases, the heat transfer is decreased rapidly.

  • Trimethylglycine, commonly named betaine, is the most simple amphoteric molecule. It is completely vegetal (1,2), as it is produced in the sugar industry by industrial chromatography of molasses. While abundantly used in foods and diet supplements, many interesting applications in cosmetics have recently been investigated, like its capability to increase the volume and stability of foams in surfactant solutions. For its special chemical structure (it is the internal salt of a weak acid and a strong alkali) trimethylglycine is a solvent and buffering agent for strong acids and Lewis' acids. It allows to improve the efficiency of $\alpha$- and $\beta$-hydroxy acids in increasing the physiological rate of epidermal cell renewal, while keeping a low skin-irritation level. In oral care cosmetics, it acts as a mucous membrane protectant (3). For its special water co-ordination capability, its solubilising power, polymer swelling capability, after-feel improvement in hair products, skin moisturization and elasticity enhancing properties, trimethylglycine provides unusual characteristics to many products intended for skin maintenance (4).(omitted)

  • The CLA used to add in diet was chemically synthesized by alkaline isomerization method with corn oil. To investigated the effects of conjugated linoleic acid(CLA) added diet feeding on CLA accumulation and blood characteristics of pork, a total of 64 Landrace was fed both CLA-free and CLA-added(0.3, 0.6 and 0.9%) diet for 1∼4 weeks. Cholesterol compositions in blood and CLA contents and fatty acid compositions of loin, belly, bone and skin were determined at 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks after CLA added at fed. The HDL content in blood of all treatments was higher(P<0.05) than that of control and that of treatment 3 was higher(P<0.05) than that of other treatments among the CLA feeding periods. Palmitic, stearic and linolenic acids composition of loin and belly was increased but oleic, linoleic and arachidonic acids composition of them was decreased according to increasing the CLA feeding periods. CLA contents of loin and belly were higher than that of control and increased according to increasing the quantity of CLA and CLA feeding periods. CLA contents of bone and skin were higher than that of control, too. CLA content of skin was higher than that of bone. It was suggested that CLA could be accumulated in loin, belly, bone and skin by dietary CLA supplementation, and the CLA concentration and fatty acid composition in muscle could be affected by CLA level in diet and feeding period.

  • Organogels are semi-solid systems that consist of an apolar solvent as the liquid phase within a three-dimensional networked structure. In this study, we developed a stable and skin penetration-enhanced Lecithin Organogel (LO) containing genistein, which is one of the poorly soluble active ingredients in both polar and apolar phase. After screening of various components (type of gelators, organic and aqueous phase), hydrogenated lecithin (HL), sunflower oil (SO), dipropylene glycol (DPG), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were mainly used in this formulation. Phase ternary diagram was employed for optimization of the composition in the LO. The formulated LO were evaluated for its organoleptic characteristics, stability, pH, rheology, phase transition temperatures, microscopic analysis and skin penetration. The optimized stable LO system can be utilized as an effective and stable cosmetic formulation that can carry poorly soluble active ingredients at high concentration for topical dermal delivery.

  • Background: Trichophyton verrucosum (T. verrucosum) is a zoophilic dermatophyte that causes ringworm in cattle and is prevalent worldwide. This dermatophyte may be responsible for various conditions, especially inflammatory skin lesions. Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the changes in the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of T. verrucosum infections in southeastern Korea. Methods: A total of 34 patients who visited the Catholic Skin Clinic and the Kyungpook National University Hospital in Daegu, Korea from 2005 to 2017 were diagnosed with T. verrucosum infection. The diagnosis was confirmed using fungal culture. The data were based on a retrospective survey of the medical records. Results: The annual incidence of T. verrucosum infection was very low. There was no difference in the sexual incidence. T. verrucosum infection was most common among subjects in their fifties and sixties. The highest incidence was during the month of September. The arm was most frequently involved, followed by the face. This infection was predominant in patients living in rural areas. Conclusion: These clinicoepidemiological findings provide useful information for understanding the changes in the infection caused by T. verrucosum. In particular, it was interesting to note that the incidence was very low, majority of the affected subjects were in their fifties and sixties, and the most commonly affected site was the arm.

  • The objectives of this study were to determine the interaction between porcine myofibrillar proteins and various gelatins (bovine hide, porcine skin, fish skin, and duck skin gelatins) and their impacts on gel properties of porcine myofibrillar proteins. Porcine myofibrillar protein was isolated from pork loin muscle (M. longissimus dorsi thoracis et lumborum). Control was prepared with only myofibrillar protein (60 mg/mL), and gelatin treatments were formulated with myofibrillar protein and each gelatin (9:1) at the same protein concentration. The myofibrillar protein-gelatin mixtures were heated from $10^{\circ}C$ to $75^{\circ}C$ ($2^{\circ}C/min$). Little to no impacts of gelatin addition on pH value and color characteristics of heat-induced myofibrillar protein gels were observed (p>0.05). The addition of gelatin slightly decreased cooking yield of heat-induced myofibrillar protein gels, but the gels showed lower centrifugal weight loss compared to control (p<0.05). The addition of gelatin significantly decreased hardness, cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness of heat-induced myofibrillar gels. Further, sodium dodecyl poly-acrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) showed no interaction between myofibrillar proteins and gelatin under non-thermal conditions. Only a slight change in the endothermic peak (probably myosin) of myofibrillar protein-gelatin mixtures was found. The results of this study show that the addition of gelatin attenuated the water-holding capacity and textural properties of heat-induced myofibrillar protein gel. Thus, it could be suggested that well-known positive impacts of gelatin on quality characteristics of processed meat products may be largely affected by the functional properties of gelatin per se, rather than its interaction with myofibrillar proteins.
