In this paper, the towing stability of the LNG bunker barge was estimated. Currently, LNG bunkering barge is being developed for the bunkering of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), an eco-friendly energy source. Since the LNG bunkering barge assumes the form of a towed ship connected to the tow line, the towing stability of the LNG bunker barge is crucial f not only for the safety of the LNG bunker barge but also the neighboring sailing vessels. In the initial stages, a numerical code for towing simulation was developed to estimate the towing stability of the LNG bunkering barge. The MMG (Maneuvering Mathematical modeling Group) model was applied to the equations of motion while the empirical formula was applied to the maneuvering coefficients for use in the initial design stage. To validate the developed numerical code, it was compared with published calculation and model test results. Towing simulations were done based on the changing skeg area and the towing position of the LNG bunkering barge using the developed numerical codes. As a result, the suitability of the designed stern skeg area was confirmed.

In this paper, the towing stability of the LNG bunker barge is estimated. Currently, LNG bunkering barge is being developed as an infrastructure for the bunkering of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), an eco-friendly energy source. Since the LNG bunker barge are in the form of towed ship connected to the tow line, the towing stability of the LNG bunker barge is very important for the safety of not only the LNG bunker barge but also the surrounding sailing vessels. The numerical code for towing simulation was developed to estimate the towing stability of the LNG bunker barge at the initial design stage. The MMG(Manoeuvring Mathematical Group) model was applied to the equations of motion and the empirical formula was applied to the maneuvering coefficients so that they could be used in the initial design stage. To validity of the developed numerical code, it was compared with published calculation and model test results. Towing simulations were carried out according to with and without stern skeg of the LNG bunker barge using the developed numerical code. Through the results of the simulations, the appropriateness of the stern skeg area designed was confirmed.
One of the problem areas in designing a barge is its resistance and corese stability when it is towed by a tugboat. In this paper, as a part of design of a incinerating vessel, the results of some experimental studies on the effect of various kinds of anti-yawing skegs to the course keeping stability and on the additional resistance caused by them were summarized.

When a barge is towed by a tug boat using a tow line, the barge is frequently subject to a large sway motion induced from its inherent yaw motions. This large sway motion combined with external forces due to winds and waves may makes the towing to be difficult or even dangerous. It has been reported that in worse situations, barges or tugs are capsized. In addition, the large sway motion of the towed barge gives a menace to the safety of ships navigating nearby. This paper is the results of the experimental investigation into the course stability of an 8,000 DWT barge using a Towing Tank and a Circulating Water Channel. Various skegs are designed and course stability tests for the barge with skegs are conducted in calm water and in irregular waves. It is observed that an effective skeg attached to the barge enables the sway motion to be zero while the sway amplitude of the bare hull is around 10 times its breadth.

Most container ships are currently being constructed as Ultra-Large Container Ships. Hence, the equipment of the ships is also becoming relatively large. In particular, propellers, rudders, and rudder stocks are large in the stern structure, and in relation, efficient design of the hull structures to safely secure these parts is important. The bottom shell plate surface of a stern skeg is a perforated plate from which the rudder stock penetrates, so it is an important component for the stern structure. In this paper, to determine the critical buckling of the shell plate, an interaction curve equation for the two-axis compression of the shell plate was derived using the maximum value of the static structural stress multiplier in a load multiplier mode. This equation predicts the timing of the buckling occurrence. By analyzing this interaction curve equation, the buckling behavior of the plates subjected to a combination load was determined and the usefulness of applying it to ship building was investigated.

The present study concerns the stern slamming load of container carriers, with stern bulb arrangement variation. First, a series of wedge drop tests were conducted using simple wedge models with fixed deadrise angles, and tests with the cross-section models of practical container carrier sterns were followed. The deadrise angle of the simple wedge ranged from 0° to 10°. The pressure measurement results of the simple wedge drop tests were distributed between empirical formula and analytic solution, so the experimental setup was validated. In the cases of practical hull cross-sections, the water entry of the bulb prior to that of the transom resulted in characteristic water film generation and delayed pressure peak appearance. The trapped air between the bulbs damped the pressure in the twin skeg hull case, reducing the pressure peak and causing the pressure oscillation during water entry.
This study investigated the sea trial performance of a wave piercing high speed planing hull (WPH). The bow shape of the boat is sharp, and it has no chine or spray strip like a normal planing boat. The skeg is attached to the bottom of the boat in the longitudinal direction from the bow to the stern. The speed performance was analyzed as the speed dropped in a wave, and the seakeeping performance was compared with that of a planing boat with a similar velocity coefficient by measuring the vertical acceleration of the bow in the wave. The turning circle was compared with Lewandowski's estimation for a planing boat. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that the velocity drop of the developed WPH was not large in a wave, and the vertical acceleration was greatly reduced compared with that of a normal planing boat. The turning circle was somewhat larger than the estimated results for a planing boat, but the overall tendency was the same.

A wide scope of numerical simulations was performed to predict model-ship resistances by using STAR-CCM+ and OpenFOAM. The numerical results were compared with experimental measurements in towing tank to analyze statistical reliability of the present simulations. Based on the normal distribution of resistance errors in 113 cases of container carriers, tankers and very large crude-oil carriers, the confidence intervals of numerical error were estimated as [-2.64%,+2.32%] and [-1.82%, +1.87%] with 95% confidence in STAR-CCM+ and OpenFOAM, respectively. The resistance errors of liquefied natural gas carriers with single- and twin-skeg were confident in the ranges of [-2.51%,+2.64%] and [-2.29%, +1.46%], respectively. The grid uncertainty of resistance coefficients for KCS was also quantitatively analyzed by using a grid verification procedure. The grid uncertainty of OpenFOAM (5.1%) was larger than 4.4% uncertainty of STAR-CCM+ although OpenFOAM provided statistically more confident results than those of STAR-CCM+. It means that a grid system verified under a specific condition does not automatically lead to statistical reliability in general cases.

This paper presents the results of an experimental and numerical study on the towing characteristics of a barge. A series of model tests were carried out at the Ocean Engineering Basin of KRISO. A model with a 1:50 scale ratio was constructed out of wood. First, force coefficient tests were performed in order to obtain the surge, sway, and yaw force coefficients of the barge. The focus was the effect of skeg on the force coefficients. The stability parameter was calculated from the force coefficients. Next, towing tests in calm sea were carried out with different towline lengths and towing speeds. The trajectories of the barge and the towline tensions were measured during the tests. The measured trajectories were compared with numerical simulation results using a cross-flow model. The towing stability of the barge in a calm sea is discussed in detail.
This paper presents the results of a numerical study on the towing characteristics of a barge under various wind conditions. First, stability criteria, including the wind force, were derived based on the linear motion equations of a towed vessel. The effect of the wind force on the towing stability was investigated using stability criteria. Next, towing simulations were carried out using a nonlinear time-domain simulation method. In this case, the towline was modeled as a simple spring-damper, and the wind force was computed using the wind coefficient from CFD calculations. Simulations were conducted for a barge under a constant towing speed and constant wind speed conditions. The effect of the wind direction on the slewing motion was also observed. In addition, a series of numerical simulations using variable wind speeds were performed for the present barge with and without a skeg.
