  • In the present day scenario, concrete construction is rapidly becoming uneconomical and non sustainable practice, due to the scarcity of raw materials and environmental pollution caused by the manufacturing of cement. In this study an attempt has been made to propose recycled aggregates from demolition wastes as coarse aggregate in geopolymer concrete (GPC). Experimental investigations have been conducted to find optimum percentage of recycled aggregates (RA) in GPC by replacing 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% of coarse aggregates by RA to produce recycled aggregate geopolymer concrete (RGPC). From the study it has been found that the optimum replacement percentage of recycled aggregates was 40% based on mechanical properties and workability. In order to study and compare the flexural behaviour of RGPC and GPC four beams of size $175mm{\times}150mm{\times}1200mm$ were prepared and tested under two point loading. Test results were evaluated with respect to first crack load, ultimate load, load-deflection characteristics, ductility and energy absorption characteristics. Form the experimental study it can be concluded that the addition of recycled aggregate in GPC causes slight reduction in its strength and ductility. Since the percentage reduction in strength and behaviour of RGPC is meager compared to GPC it can be recommended as a sustainable and environment friendly construction material.

  • This paper discusses the spatial variability of the carbonation depth caused by the mesoscopic structure of the concrete and the influence of the spatial variability on the thickness of the concrete cover. To conduct the research, a method to generate the random aggregate structure (RAS) based on polygonal particles and a simplified numerical model of the concrete carbonation at meso-scale are firstly developed. Based on the method and model, the effect of the aggregate properties including shape, content and gradation on the spatial variability of the carbonation depth is comprehensively studied. The results show that a larger degree of the spatial variability will be obtained by using (1) the aggregates with a larger aspect ratio; (2) a larger aggregate content; (3) the gradation which has more large particles. The proper sample size and model size used in the analysis are also studied. Finally, a case study is conducted to demonstrate the influence of the spatial variability of the carbonation depth on the proper thickness of the concrete cover. The research in this paper not only provides suggestions on how to decrease the spatial variability, but also proposes the method to consider the effect of the spatial variability in designing the thickness of the concrete cover.

  • Fifteen lightweight concrete mixes were tested to evaluate the effect of maximum size of coarse aggregate and the replacement level of natural sand on the various properties of fresh lightweight concrete. The different properties, such as water absorption against the elapsed time, pore size distribution and micro-structure of lightweight aggregates used, influencing on the workability of fresh concrete were also measured. Test results showed that the initial slump of lightweight concrete decreased with the increase of the replacement level of natural sand. The slump of all-lightweight concrete sharply decreased by around 80% of the initial slump after 30~60 minutes. The air content and bleeding rate of lightweight concrete were significantly affected by the replacement level of natural sand as well as the maximum size of coarse aggregates. Empirical equations recommended in ACI 211 and Korea concrete standard specifications underestimated the air content of the lightweight concrete, indicating that the underestimation increases with the decrease of the replacement level of natural sand. In addition, equations to predict the air content and bleeding rate of lightweight concrete were proposed based on the test results.

  • The recycling of waste concrete is increasing for the environment protection and the shortage of aggregate according to the large scale construction project in Korea. The more manufacturing high quality recycled aggregate is produced, the more waste concrete powder generated from the manufacture process of recycled aggregate, and the consideration about the recycling of waste concrete powder is need. Waste concrete powder was used for the partial replacement of silica powder, which is a main raw material for the manufacture of autoclave foamed concrete. According to the results of research, the slurry density, flow, compressive strength mainly depend on the replacement ratio of particle size and waste concrete powder. At the SEM analysis, the more high-waste concrete powder was the less there are generated tobermorite. But we conclude that it is possible to replace WCP as silica source in the manufacture of the lightweight foamed concrete.

  • The experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of coarse aggregate, admixture, and accelerator on the properties of concrete. As the maximum size of coarse aggregate decreased from 13 mm to 8 mm, fluidity of fresh concrete declined but compressive strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity of hardened concrete increased remarkably. The mechanical properties of concrete substituted silica fume to the plain concrete improved, the compressive strength of that substituted blast furnace slag increased slightly. The hydration reaction and compressive strength of specimen with sodium luminate type accelerator were high at initial, but specimen with alkali free type accelerator improved largely in 28 days.

  • In Japan in of today, there is no aspect in which the quantity of waste glass bottle discharged from ordinary homes decreases. Moreover, the kind of shape and color of the waste glass bottles are increasing little by little. In the recycling of the glass bottle, it becomes a problem that many kind of the color is abounding. It is possible to use the transparent glass bottle as raw material of the glassware. Since the reproduction of the color is difficult, the colored glass bottle is not possible to use as a raw material. Therefore, the processing of these glass bottles entirely depends on the reclamation. In Japan, the security of the new reclaimed land is very difficult for the reason of the environmental damage. Moreover, the life expectancy in many reclaimed lands is anticipated with within two years. Therefore, the development of the processing method of glass bottle other than reclamation becomes a rapid problem. At present it is examined that it is used of an aggregate of the colored pavement, as one of the application methods of colored glass bottle. The particle size of produced glass aggregate is also 5mm or less, because the thickness is 5mm or less on almost glass bottles. And almost glass particles have the sharp tip. The application as the aggregate is limited for this sharpness of the particle. This study was carried out for the purpose of the establishment of sharpness measuring method of the glass aggregate particle. It is possible that the injury degree to human in the handling is known, if showing the sharpness of the aggregate particle at the objective numerical value is possible. And the application of the glass aggregate is spread. In this research, the balloon fracture method was used for the sharpness measurement of the glass particle. This method is based on the completely new idea, and it is possible to express completely the possibility of injury to the human. It is reported with the detailed result in full paper, because this study is continuous in order to get the JIS which is industrial standard of Japan.

  • The concrete used most in construction materials. There is an overcrowded iron dimensions use of the concrete at time of the other concrete theory on the reinforcing rod back which did congestion and compares it with this, and there are more few dimensions of the aggregate than concrete, and quantity of aggregate passage is superior in mortar than concrete. If a volume rate of the aggregate writes mortar than concrete against this, therefore, unit amount increases, and quantity of paste increases and quantity of dry shrinkage than increase concrete. However, I let I regulate lay priest distribution of the aggregate, and the results rates increase and reduce unit amount and decrease quantity of dry shrinkage, and separation resistance and the gap passage characteristics are judged because it can be it in a substitute document of very superior concrete. I came to carry out the study that I watched to let I was useful a little more and do the improvement repair of a become building wall body, a basement pillar and repair reinforcement of the assistant in the reinforcing rod back, the old age when I made congestion here. I regulated lay priest distribution of the aggregate in the study and regulated substitution rate of the aggregate (40%, 50%, 60%) and divided W/C 30%, 40% standards and produced mortar and I compared quantity of air by this, slump, compression robbery and showed it this time.

  • The present study evaluated the physical, mechanical and thermal properties of the foam glass aggregate and insulation foundation with this, in order to promote the use of insulated foundations using domestically produced foamed glass aggregates. As a result of the evaluation, the compacted foam glass aggregate showed at the same level as overseas products in terms of unit volume mass, particle size and other characteristics, and a compressive strength of 40.6 N/cm2, which was superior to the existing organic insulation materials such as XPS. And the thermal conductivity of the foam glass aggregate was 0.84 W/mK, and the thermal transmittance of the specimen simulating the insulation foundation was 0.37 W/mK, so the thermal conductivity of the foam glass aggregate was estimated to be 0.80 W/mK. With these results, it was found that it is possible to use the insulation foundation with re-producted foam glass aggregate by crushing the waste from the process of producing foam glass products.

  • To evaluate the engineering characteristics of aggregate base materials, cyclic triaxial, CBR and permeability tests were performed for 15 samples. The CBR values of aggregate base materials have wide range from 32 to 110(average 81) and the amount of swelling in submerged conditions has below 0.04mm. The Modulus of aggregate base materials were significantly affected by volumetric stress, linear volumetric model was best for fitting. The modulus of aggregate base materials were determined within range of 100MPa~600MPa, 80~270 and 0.1~0.6 for model coefficient $k_1$ and $k_2$ respectively. The empirical correlation model was suggested that prediction the modulus from the basic properties obtained from particle size distribution test and compaction test. The coefficient of determination of the proposed correlation model was 0.423 for model coefficient $k_1$, 0.920 for model coefficient $k_2$ and 0.872 for modulus with stress level.

  • Lightweight aggregate was made using glass abrasive sludge and graphite in this study. This study tried to draw the correlation between lightweight aggregate's properties and internal pore. The precursor was made by added different graphite contents and was burned for 20 min. at $700^{circ}C$ and $800^{circ}C$. The volume change of aggregate was checked at before and after homing, and confirmed that the homing temperature effected more than expanding agent on volume change. The size and area of pore in aggregate increased according to the amount of expanding agent and homing temperature but it didn't bring about big effect above $1\%$ of expanding agent. The absorbtion ratio, thermal conductivity and porosity have a high correlation, so each coefficient of correlation showed above $0.8\pm$.
