Transient Effects of Calf Muscle Fatigue and Visual Control on Postural Balance During Single Leg Standing

  • PURPOSE: Muscle fatigue is a cause to change proprioception. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of calf muscle fatigue and visual control on postural balance during single-legged standing in healthy adults. METHODS: Nineteen healthy adults (male) were participated in this study (mean age: 24.36 years; mean height: 171.32 cm; mean weight: 64.58 kg). The postural balance (sway length, sway area, sway velocity of COG displacement) was measured by Balance Trainer System (BT4) in before and after calf muscle fatigue feeling in single legged stance. In this study, repetitive single-legged heel rise test was used to induce fatigue of the calf muscle. Paired t- test was used to compare the postural balance between before and after calf muscle fatigue. Data of subjects were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Level of significance was set to .05. RESULTS: The sway length, sway area, sway velocity of COG (center of gravity) displacement after calf muscle fatigue feeling was significantly increased compared to before calf muscle fatigue feeling during single leg standing both eye open and close conditions (p<.05). CONCLUSION: This study suggested that calf muscle fatigue feeling has affected on postural balance when standing one leg both eye open and close conditions and postural control was disturbed by muscle fatigue and visual feedback in single leg standing.

Effect of Single Leg Stance Training According to Different Support Surfaces on Walking Speed and Balance in Patients with Chronic Hemiplegia (지지면에 따른 마비 측 한 발 서기 훈련이 만성 편마비 환자의 보행속도와 균형에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of single-leg stance training according to different support surfaces on walking speed and balance in patients with chronic hemiplegia. Methods: Twenty-two patients with chronic stroke were randomly categorized into an experimental group (11 patients) and a control group (11 patients). In the experimental group, single-leg stance training was performed on an unstable surface after 50 min of general physical therapy. In the control group, single-leg stance training was performed on a stable surface after 50 min of general physical therapy. All participants performed five sets of single-leg stance exercises per minute and rested for 3 min. The intervention was performed 5 times a week for 4 weeks, and each patient was evaluated using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Fugl-Meyer Assessment Scale (FMA), and difference in walking speed between the first and last day of the intervention. Results: Compared to baseline measurements, both study groups showed significant increases in FMA, BBS, and walking speed (p<.05) after the intervention. However, there was no statistically significant difference (p>.05) between the experimental and control groups. However, in the experimental group, the increases in FMA, BBS, and walking speed were 3.36 %, 9.50 %, and 7.71 %, respectively. In the control group, the increases in FMA, BBS, and walking speed were 2.39 %, 6.65 %, and 7.64 %. Conclusion: Single-leg stance training on different support surfaces could help improve walking ability and balance in patients with chronic hemiplegia.

Effects of 8-Week Elastic Resistance Exercise on Knee Isokinetic Rate of Velocity Development and Balance by Age

  • Ten women in their 20s and 10 women in their 50s were selected to investigate the effect of an elastic band exercise program for 8 weeks according to age on women's knee speed expression rate and balance. Knee isokinetic muscle strength measurement, single-legged standing with eyes closed, and YBT were performed 1 week before and after the exercise program. The measured data were analyzed through a mixed design two-way ANOVA, and if there was a significant difference, post hoc verification was performed using the bonferoni method. In our study, as a result of an 8-week elastic band exercise program, there was no difference in the speed development rate according to the measurement period, and the speed development rate according to age was found to be higher in people in their 50s than in their 20s. In our study, there was no difference in balance ability depending on the measurement period, and there was also no difference in balance ability depending on age. Discussing the results of our study, we found that 8 weeks of elastic band exercise cannot bring about significant changes in speed development ability and balance ability, which become more accurate with age.
