Flow characteristics of turbulent elliptic jets were experimentally investigated using a single-frame PIV system. A sharp-edged elliptic nozzle with aspect ratio(AR) of 2 was tested and the experimental results were compared with those of circular jet having the same equivalent diameter($D_e$). The Reynolds number based on the nozzle exit velocity and nozzle equivalent diameter was about $1{\times}10^4$. The spreading rate along the major and minor axis are different remarkably. The jet half width along the major axis decreases at first and then increases with going downstream. But along the minor axis the jet width increases steadily. The elliptic jet of AR=2 has one switching points at $X/D_e=2$ within the near field. Turbulence properties are also found to be significantly different along the major and minor axis planes.

When a bubble reaches a free surface, a bursting of the bubble produces a high speed jet. Despite its practical importance, significant effort has been devoted to investigate a bursting jet by a single bubble near a free surface. In the present study, we perform numerical simulations of bubbles in a tandem arrangement at Bo=0.05. The configuration of the tandem bubbles is systematically varied by changing a radius of a following bubble (RF) and the gap distance between two bubbles (L). Compared to a single bubble case, we show that the bursting bubble in the tandem arrangement accelerates, and the jet velocity increases. Moreover, we find that a critical gap distance at which the jet velocity unexpectedly changes exists in the tandem case.

The present experiment investigates the effects of pore density f of aluminum foam heat sinks, the jet-to-jet spacing X and the nozzle plate-to-target surface spacing H of 3$\times$3 square impinging arrays on the averaged Nusselt number. The performance of the aluminum foam heat sinks and the rectangular plate heat sink is evaluated in terms of the enhancement factor. /equation omitted/. The multiple impinging jet with X/d=4.0 displays higher Nusselt numbers than single impinging jet for 12.0$\leq$H/d$\leq$20.0. With the variation of the jet-to-jet spacing, the aluminum foam heat sink of 10 PPI show higher Nusselt numbers than the 20 and 40 PPI aluminum foam heat sinks. Further, the 10 PPI aluminum foam heat sink demonstrates 26% higher enhancement factor than the rectangular plate heat sink in the range of 7000$\leq$Re$\leq$11000.

The experimental study on flow and heat transfer characteristics was conducted to investigate and to compare the performance of swirl jet by a twisted tape as a swirl generator with the performance of impinging single circular jet in fully developed flow tube. The effects of jet Reynolds number(Re=8700, 13800, 20000, 26500), dimensionless distance of nozzle-to-plate(H/d=2, 4, 6, 8) and swirl ratio(S=0.11, 0.23, 0.30) of the jet on the local and average Nusselt number have been examined. Measurements of local heat transfer rate and flow patterns on the jet impinging plate were used naphthalene sublimation technique and flow visualization technique respectively. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity of the jet along the centerline were measured. With a twisted tape in the nozzle exit, average Nusselt number at the around area of stagnation point were higher than those without the twisted tape at H/d=2, 4 and with the increase of Reynolds number. With a twisted tape in the nozzle, in the case of H/d=2, Re=26500 and S=0.11, maximum local Nusselt number at the region of y/d=0 and x/d=0.44 was obtained.
Thermal mixing by steam jets in a pool is dominantly influenced by a turbulent water jet generated by the condensing steam jets, and the proper prediction of this turbulent jet behavior is critical for the pool mixing analysis. A turbulent jet flow induced by a steam jet discharged through a vertical upward single hole into a subcooled water pool was subjected to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Based on the small-scale test data derived under a horizontal steam discharging condition, this analysis was performed to validate a CFD method of analysis previously developed for condensing jet-induced pool mixing phenomena. In previous validation work, the CFD results and the test data for a limited range of radial and axial directions were compared in terms of profiles of the turbulent jet velocity and temperature. Furthermore, the behavior of the turbulent jet induced by the steam jet through a horizontal single hole in a subcooled water pool failed to show the exact axisymmetric flow pattern with regards to an overall pool mixing, whereas the CFD analysis was done with an axisymmetric grid model. Therefore, another new small-scale test was conducted under a vertical upward steam discharging condition. The purpose of this test was to generate the velocity and temperature profiles of the turbulent jet by expanding the measurement ranges from the jet center to a location at about 5% of $U_m$ and 10 cm to 30 cm from the exit of the discharge nozzle. The results of the new CFD analysis show that the recommended CFD model of the high turbulent intensity of 40% for the turbulent jet and the fine mesh grid model can accurately predict the test results within an error rate of about 10%. In this work, the turbulent jet model, which is used to simply predict the temperature and velocity profiles along the axial and radial directions by means of the empirical correlations and Tollmien's theory was improved on the basis of the new test data. The results validate the CFD model of analysis. Furthermore, the turbulent jet model developed in this study can be used to analyze pool thermal mixing when an ellipsoidal steam jet is discharged under a high steam mass flux in a subcooled water pool.

Experiments were carried out to obtain the effects of nozzle configuration and jet to jet spacing on the heat transfer characteristics of single line of circular water jets impinging on a constant heat flux plane surface. The nozzle configurations are Cone type, Reverse cone type and Vertical circular type, and the nozzle arrays are single jet(nozzle dia. 8 mm), 1 row of 3 jets and 1 row of 5 jets. Jet velocities ranging from 3m/s to 8m/s were investigated for the nozzle to target plate spacing of 80 mm. For the Cone and Reverse cone type nozzle arrays, the average Nusselt number of 1 row of 5 jets was larger than that of 1 row of 3 jets at Re$_{D}$<45000, but that of 1 row of 3 jets was larger than that of 1 row of 5 jets at $Reo\le45000$. For the Vertical circular type nozzle, however, the average Nusselt number of 1 row of 3 jets was larger than that of 1 row of 5 jets at all jet velocities. In the condition of fixed mass flow rates, the maximum heat transfer augmentation was obtained for 1 row of 5 jets and was over 2 times larger than that of the single jet for all nozzle configurations. The nozzle configurations that produce the maximum average Nusselt number are as follows: For 1 row of 3 jets, the Vertical circular type at $Reo\le45000$ and the Reverse cone type at $Reo\le45000$. But, they are the Reverse cone type at Re$_{D}$<55000 and the Vertical circular type at$Reo\le55000$ for 1 row of 5 jets.

Experiments have been conducted to obtain local and average heat transfer coefficients associated with impingement of a row of circular, free surface-water jets on a constant heat flux surface. Nozzle arrays are a row of 3 jets (nozzle dia.=4.6 mm) and a row of 5 jets (nozzle dia.=3.6 mm), and the nozzle configuration is Reverse cone type revealed good performance in heat transfer. Nozzle-to-plate spacings ranging from 16 mm to 80 mm were investigated for two jet center to center spacings 25 mm and 37.5 mm in the jet velocity of 3 m/s (R $e_{D}$=27000) to 8 m/s (R $e_{D}$=70000). For a row of 3 jets and a row of 5 jets, the stagnation heat transfer of the central jet is lower than that of adjacent jets. In the wall jet region between jets, for small nozzle-to-plate spacing and large jet velocity, the local maximum in the Nusselt number was observed, however, for small jet velocity or large nozzle-to-plate spacing, the local maximum was not observed. Except for the condition of $V_{O}$=8 m/s and H/D=10, the average Nusselt number reveals the following ranking: a row of 5 jets, a row of 3 jets, single jet. For a row of 3 jet, the maximum average Nusselt number occurs at H/D=8 ~ 10, and for a row of 5 jets, it occurs at H/D=2 ~ 4. Compared with the single jet, enhancement of average heat transfer for a row of 3 jets is approximately 1.52 ~ 2.28 times, and 1.69 ~ 3.75 times for a row of 5 jets.ets.s.

Spray characteristics of liquid jets in crossflow, which can be observed in the liquid jet injection system of a gas turbine or ramjet engine, were experimentally investigated. By measuring liquid jet penetration in the case of single orifice and double orifice injectors, the experimental formula for jet penetration was modified to consider penetration distances greater than that considered in a previous study. The changes in spray characteristics resulting from changes in the liquid jet and crossflow pressure, including SMD and jet disintegration, were carefully studied. Specifically, the jet penetration was measured for different injector shapes, and in the case of a double orifice injector, the penetration of the rear orifice jet was found to be greater by approximately 20% ($L_h$ = 4 mm) compared to that in the case of a single orifice injector because of the influence of the front orifice.
The detachment stability characteristics of syngas $H_2$/CO jet attached flames were studied. The flame stability was observed while varying the syngas fuel composition, coaxial nozzle diameter and fuel nozzle rim thickness. The detachment stability limit of the syngas single jet flame was found to decrease with increasing mole fraction of carbon monoxide in the fuel. In hydrogen jet flames with coaxial air, the flame detachment stability was found to be independent of the coaxial nozzle diameter. However, velocities of appearance of liftoff and blowout velocities of lifted flames have dependence. At lower fuel velocity range, the critical coaxial air velocity leading to flame detachment increases with increasing fuel jet velocity, whereas at higher fuel velocity range, it decreases. This increasing-decreasing non-monotonic trend appears for all $H_2$/CO syngas compositions (50/50~100/0% $H_2$/CO). To qualitatively understand the flame behavior near the nozzle rim, $OH^*$ chemiluminescence imaging was performed near the detachment limit conditions. For all fuel compositions, local extinction on the rim is observed at lower fuel velocities(increasing stability region), while local flame extinction downstream of the rim is observed at higher fuel velocities(decreasing stability region). Maximum values of the non-monotonic trends appear to be identical when the fuel jet velocity is normalized by the critical fuel velocity obtained in the single jet cases.

An experimental study has been conducted to determine the effects of inclined impinging jet on the local heat transfer coefficients. A single jet with nozzle diameter of 24.6 mm was tested for Reynolds numbers from 10,000 to 70,000 and nozzle-to-plate spacings of 2~6 jet diameters. The angle of inclination of the impingement surface relative to the horizontal surface was varied from $0^{\cire}$ (normal impingement) to $60^{\cire}$. The results indicate that the point of maximum heat transfer is moved up from the geometrical stagnation point of inclined surface by Coanda effect. The local heat transfer coefficients on the minor jet region decrease more rapidly than on the major jet region, thus creating an imbalance in the cooling capabilities on the two sides.
