The layer that is directly influenced by ground surface is called the atmospheric boutsdary layer in comparison with the free atmosphere of higher layer. In the boundary layer, the changes of wind, temperature and coefficient of turbulent diffusion in altitude are large and have great influences an atmospheric diffusion. The purpose of this paper is to express the structure and characteristics of development of mixed layer by using laboratory experiment and numerical simulation. Laboratory experiment using water tank are performed that closely simulate the process of break up of nocturnal surface inversion above heated surface and its phenomena are analyzed by the use of horizontally averaged temperature which is observed. The result obtained from the laboratory experiment is compared with theoretical ones from ; \textsc{k}-\varepsilon numerical model. The results are summarized as follows. 1) The horizontally averaged temperature was found to vary smoothly with height and the mixed layer developed obviously being affected by the convection. 2) The mean height of mixed layer may be predicted as a function of time, knowing the mean initial temperature gradient. The experimental values are associated well with the theoretical values computed for value of the universal constant $C_r$= 0.16, our $C_r$ value is little smaller than the value found by Townsend and Deardoru et al.
Three wind-tunnel simulations of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow in suburban country exposure were generated for length scale factors 1:400, 1:250 and 1:220 to investigate scale effects in wind-tunnel simulations of the suburban ABL, to address recommended wind characteristics for suburban exposures reported in international standards, and to test redesigned experimental hardware. Investigated parameters are mean velocity, turbulence intensity, turbulent Reynolds shear stress, integral length scale of turbulence and power spectral density of velocity fluctuations. Experimental results indicate it is possible to reproduce suburban natural winds in the wind tunnel at different length scales without significant influence of the simulation length scale on airflow characteristics. However, in the wind tunnel it was not possible to reproduce two characteristic phenomena observed in full-scale: dependence of integral length scales on reference wind velocity and a linear increase in integral length scales with height. Furthermore, in international standards there is a considerable scatter of recommended values for suburban wind characteristics. In particular, recommended integral length scales in ESDU 85020 (1985) are significantly larger than in other international standards. Truncated vortex generators applied in this study proved to be successful in part-depth suburban ABL wind-tunnel simulation that yield a novel methodology in studies on wind effects on structures and air pollution dispersion.
The sensitivity of the typhoon track and intensity simulation to physics schemes of the global model are examined for the typhoon Bolaven and Tembin cases by using the Global/Regional Integrated Model System-Global Model Program (GRIMs-GMP) with the physics package version 2.0 of the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems. Microphysics, Cloudiness, and Planetary boundary Layer (PBL) parameterizations are changed and the impact of each scheme change to typhoon simulation is compared with the control simulation and observation. It is found that change of microphysics scheme from WRF Single-Moment 5-class (WSM5) to 1-class (WSM1) affects to the typhoon simulation significantly, showing the intensified typhoon activity and increased precipitation amount, while the effect of the prognostic cloudiness and PBL enhanced mixing scheme is not noticeable. It appears that WSM1 simulates relatively unstable and drier atmospheric structure than WSM5, which is induced by the latent heat change and the associated radiative effect due to not considering ice cloud. And WSM1 results the enhanced typhoon intensity and heavy rainfall simulation. It suggests that the microphysics is important to improve the capability for typhoon simulation of a global model and to increase the predictability of medium range forecast.
In order to clarify the impacts of thermal difference in atmospheric boundary layer due to the different sophistication of building information in Busan metropolitan areas, several numerical simulations were carried out. ACM (Albedo Calculation Model) and WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) was applied for estimating albedo and meteorological elements in urban area, respectively. In comparison with coarse aggregated and small buildings, diurnal variation of albedo is highly frequent and its total value tend to be smaller in densely aggregated and tall buildings. Estimated TKE and sensible heat flux with sophisticatedly urban building parameterization is more resonable and valid values are mainly induced by urban building sophistication. The simulation results suggest that decreased albedo and increased roughness due to skyscraper plays an important role in the result of thermal change in atmospheric boundary layer.

Wind load and flow field of a drillship with respect to various super structures were experimentally investigated in KARI 1m-wide wind tunnel with an atmospheric boundary layer simulation. Six-component external balance and Particle image velocimetry technique were used to measure wind load and velocity vectors in the flow-field around the model respectively. The experimental model was an imaginary shaped drillship with an approximated model which has 1/640 scale compared with recent typical drillships. The test Reynolds number based on the overall length was about 1.5×106. It was found that dominant factors influencing on ship wind load are cabin shape and cabin height. Round cabin has smaller axial wind load and narrow boundary layer around the ship than rectangular one, but its yawing moment at certain angles becomes higher. Low cabin height also show positive effects on axial wind load too. Hull shape and forecastle shape show relatively small influences on wind loads except for slight changes around ±45° wind directions.
Faithful evaluation of the meteorological input is a prerequisite for a better understanding of air quality model performance. Despite the importance, the preliminary meteorological assessment has rarely been concerned. In this study, we aim to evaluate the performance of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model conducting a year-long high-resolution meteorological simulation in 2016 over the Seoul metropolitan area. The WRF model was configured based on a series of sensitivity simulations of initial/boundary meteorological conditions, land use mapping data, reanalysis grid nudging method, domain nesting method, and urban canopy model. The simulated results of winds, air temperature, and specific humidity in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) were evaluated following statistical evaluation guidance using the surface and upper meteorological measurements. The statistical evaluation results are presented. The model performance was interpreted acceptable for air quality modeling within the statistical criteria of complex conditions, showing consistent overestimation in wind speeds. Further statistical analysis showed that the meteorological model biases were highly systematic with systematic bias fractions (fSB) of 20~50%. This study suggests that both the momentum exchange process of the surface layer and the ABL entrainment process should be investigated for further improvement of the model performance.

Onshore wind turbines may experience substantially different wind loads depending on their working conditions, i.e. rotation velocity of rotor blades, incoming freestream wind velocity, pitch angle of rotor blades, and yaw angle of the wind-turbine tower. In the present study, aerodynamic loads acting on a horizontal axis wind turbine were accordingly quantified for the high tip speed ratio (TSR) at high yaw angles because these conditions have previously not been adequately addressed. This was analyzed experimentally on a small-scale wind-turbine model in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The wind-tunnel simulation of the neutrally stratified atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) developing above a flat terrain was generated using the Counihan approach. The ABL was simulated to achieve the conditions of a wind-turbine model operating in similar inflow conditions to those of a prototype wind turbine situated in the lower atmosphere, which is another important aspect of the present work. The ABL and wind-turbine simulation length scale factors were the same (S=300) in order to satisfy the Jensen similarity criterion. Aerodynamic loads experienced by the wind-turbine model subjected to the ABL simulation were studied based on the high frequency force balance (HFFB) measurements. Emphasis was put on the thrust force and the bending moment because these two load components have previously proven to be dominant compared to other load components. The results indicate several important findings. The loads were substantially higher for TSR=10 compared to TSR=5.6. In these conditions, a considerable load reduction was achieved by pitching the rotor blades. For the blade pitch angle at 90°, the loads were ten times lower than the loads of the rotating wind-turbine model. For the blade pitch angle at 12°, the loads were at 50% of the rotating wind-turbine model. The loads were reduced by up to 40% through the yawing of the wind-turbine model, which was observed both for the rotating and the parked wind-turbine model.
The paper reviews and discusses the substantive changes to the ASCE 49-21 Standard, Wind Tunnel Testing for Buildings and Other Structures. The most significant changes are the requirements for wind field simulations that utilize (i) partial turbulence simulations, (ii) partial model simulations for the flow around building Appurtenances, along with requirements for determining wind loads on products that are used at multiple sites in various configurations. These modifications tend to have the effect of easing the precise scaling requirements for flow simulations because it is not generally possible to construct accurate models for small elements placed, for example, on large buildings at the scales typically available in boundary layer wind tunnels. Additional discussion is provided on changes to the Standard with respect to measurement accuracy and data acquisition parameters, such as duration of tests, which are also related to scaling requirements. Finally, research needs with respect to aerodynamic mechanisms are proposed, with the goal of improving the understanding of the role of turbulence on separated-reattaching flows on building surfaces in order to continue to improve the wind tunnel method for determining design wind loads.

A method is proposed for locating the heat sources from temperature observations, and its applicability is investigated for urban thermal environment simulations. A Lagrangian particle dispersion model, which is originally built for simulating the pollutants spread in the air, is exploited to identify the heat sources by transporting the Lagrangian heat particles backwards in time. The urban wind fields are estimated using a diagnostic meteorological model incorporating the morphological model for the urban canopy. The proposed method is tested for the horizontally homogeneous urban boundary layer problems. The effects of the turbulence levels and the computational time on the simulation are investigated.
The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of physical parameterization on the simulation of a snowfall event over Korea caused by air-mass transformation by using the PSU/NCAR MM5. A heavy snowfall event over Korea during 3-5 January 2003 is selected. In addition to the control experiments employing simple-ice microphysics scheme, MRF PBL scheme, and original surface layer process, three consequent physics sensitivity experiments are performed. Each experiment exchanges microphysics (Reisner Graupel), boundary layer (YSU PBL) schemes, and revised surface layer process with a reduced thermal roughness length for the control run. The control run reproduces an overall pattern of snowfall over Korea, but with a high bias by a factor of about 2. As revealed in the previous studies, the cloud microphysics and PBL parameterizations do not show a significant sensitivity for the case of snowfall. A more sophisticated cloud processes does not reveal a discernible effect on the simulated snowfall. Further, high bias in snowfall is exaggerated when a more realistic PBL scheme is employed. On the other hand, it is found that the revised surface layer process plays a role in improving the prediction of snowfall by reducing it. Thus, it is found that a realistic design of surface layer physics in mesoscale models is an important factor to the reduction of systematic bias of the snowfall over Korea that is caused by air-mass transformation over the Yellow sea.
