  • The widespread use of the Internet and the maturing of digital video technology have led to an increase in various streaming media application. However, new classes of hosts such as mobile devices are gaining popularity, while the transmission became more heterogeneous. Due to the characteristics of mobile networks such as low speed, high error bit rate, etc., the applications over the wireless channel have different needs and limitations from desktop computers. An intermediary between two communicating endpoints to hide the heterogeneous network links is thought as one of the best approaches. In this paper, we adopted the concept of inter-packet gap and the sequence number between continuously received packets as the error discriminator, and designed an adaptive packet sizing mechanism to improve the network efficiency under varying channel conditions. Based on the proposed mechanism, the packetization scheme with error protection is proposed to scalable encoded video delivery. Finally, simulation results reveal that our proposed mechanism can react to the varying BER conditions with better network efficiency and gain the obvious improvement to video quality for stored MPEG-4 FGS video delivery.

  • In this paper, we propose a new location service and location-based routing for data dissemination from a source to a mobile group sink in less energy consumption of the sensor node. Unlike the existing protocols, the proposed protocol uses a leader sink instead of a group area as the location information to represent a mobile sink group. The proposed protocol also uses grid leaders on virtual grid structure to support sink mobility in location service. By using a leader sink as a representative and grid leaders for mobility supporting, the proposed protocol can exploit an efficient hierarchical location service and data dissemination method without using flooding. Accordingly, the proposed protocol carries out upper layer location services and data dissemination between a leader sink and a source and lower layer location services and data dissemination between the leader sink and member sinks. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed protocol achieves energy-efficiency.

  • Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) have attracted great research interest in recent years. Among many issues, lack of motivation for participating nodes to collaborate forms a major obstacle to the adoption of MANETs. Many contemporary collaboration enforcement techniques employ reputation mechanisms for nodes to avoid and penalize malicious participants. Reputation information is propagated among participants and updated based on complicated trust relationships to thwart false accusation of benign nodes. The aforementioned strategy suffers from low scalability and is likely to be exploited by adversaries. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to address these problems. With the proposed technique, no reputation information is propagated in the network and malicious nodes cannot cause false penalty to benign hosts. Nodes classify their one-hop neighbors through direct observation and misbehaving nodes are penalized within their localities. Data packets are dynamically rerouted to circumvent selfish nodes. As a result, overall network performance is greatly enhanced. This approach significantly simplifies the collaboration enforcement process, incurs low overhead, and is robust against various malicious behaviors. Simulation results based on different system configurations indicate that the proposed technique can significantly improve network performance with very low communication cost.

  • With the widespread of the wireless Internet and wireless LAN, different wireless technologies such as 3G cellular networks and WLAN will cooperate to support more users and applications with higher data rate over wider areas. When a mobile node moves around in the hybrid networks, it needs to perform seamless vertical handoffs between different wireless networks to provide high performance data transmission. When an application with TCP connection in a mobile node performs a vertical handoff, TCP performance is degraded due to packet losses even though it maintains the previous TCP state information during handoff, because 3G and WLAN have different available bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a new congestion control algorithm for vertical handoff to improve the TCP performance by measuring the rough end-to-end available bandwidth and calculating the slow-start threshold. By ns-2 simulation, we show that the proposed algorithm enhances the TCP performance during vertical handoffs compared to the previous algorithms.

  • In this paper, we review the characteristics of battle field, consider required properties of mobile radio network, and design network control architecture proper to battle field network. Also we design distributed algorithm which constructs network control architecture and transmission schedule. For the information of network connectivity and the immediate reconfiguration caused by failure, loss, or movement of nodes, configuration and transmission schedule, algorithms are to be executed periodically and for entire network reliability, algorithms must to be executed fully distributedly. At the time of loss or failure of primary local control node, we suggest the method which diminishes transmission delay. We explain the operation of network with examples. Finally designed algorithms are verified and analized by computer simulation.

  • Mobile operators are considering a variety of technical measures to cope with the explosion of data while reducing TCO(Total Cost of Ownership) of their networks. In this paper, to investigate the possibility about one of such technical measures, system level simulation to evaluate the performance of the capacity and mobility was performed in cloud base station structure to apply coordinated multi-point transmission and reception. As a result, we find out that system capacity and mobility performance may be improved according to the scale and application area of cloud base station with the operation of coordinated multi-point transmission and reception, and these mutual causality can provide practical guidelines to mobile network's operation.

  • Mobile IP (MIP) and SIP are considered as important technologies to provide the macro mobility in the next generation mobile convergence networks which have heterogeneous access networks. Typically, MIP and SIP are more suitable for the non-real-time TCP connections and the real-time RTP/UDP sessions respectively, hence a handset which uses both of these sessions should simultaneously apply MIP and SIP to perform the efficient mobility management. Existing multi-layered mobility management schemes focus on the signalling order of each protocol. However, simple combining of two protocols cannot provide the performance enhancement of the mobility management. In this paper, a novel multi-layered mobility management algorithm using the combination of SIP and fast MIPv6 (FMIPv6) is proposed. FMIPv6 and SIP mobility is simultaneously performed to reduce the service interrupt time and to guarantee QoS requirement. The delay model is defined to analysis the performance of the algorithm and the simulation results show the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we present the implementation and performance analysis of H.324M mobile multimedia terminal which s under standardization. The H.324M is the mobile extension of H.324 which is the standard for low bit rate multimedia terminals operating over GSTN. For H.324M, the multiplexing protocol (H.223) of H.324 is enhanced to protect data from the transmission errors over mobile channels. The multiplexing protocol of H.324M is classified into Levels 0, 1, 2, and 3 depending on the level of error protection. Each Level is analyzed according to different types of the data loss elements. Simulation results show that the loss caused by the corrupted flag and header produces the most serious performance degradation. Levels 1 and 2 which protect the header and flag are effective in reducing the total loss. Furthermore, the optimal flag length and threshold value for Levels 1 and 2 are determined.

  • In this paper, the models and characteristics of multipath propagation in an urban environment are described. Three propagation models(a random model, a ray model and a method of estimating time delay is proposed based on the envelope correlation between two radio frequencies. It is shown on the basis of laboratory simulation and field tests that the simple two-ray model is an adequate model for the fundamental study of the multipath propagation characteristic of the mobile radiowave and the estimating time delays of multipath-propagated waves in an urban area.

  • In mobile ad hoc networks, service discovery to search for an available service is an important issue. In this paper, we propose an efficient service discovery protocol that is combined a dht-based service discovery scheme and a P2P caching-based information spreading scheme. Proposed scheme store key information in hashed zone and search services using it's information. To search quickly a service, it use its physical neighbors information which collected by 1-hop hello message between a node and its physical neighbors. We do not use a central look up server and do not rely on flooding. Hence, it uniquely balanced all node's load in mobile ad hoc networks and reduced the number of messages exchanged, network load and response time. The simulation results show that our protocol outperforms DHT-based and flooding protocols.
