The structural methodology in designing a transmission tower have been performed to assume a simple truss behavior. But there're quite differences between a simple truss behavior and a real one. A suitable explanation for a structural stability can be expressed as a semi-rigid connection instead of the assumed hinged connection. This study proposes an alternative structural analysis modelling strategy for the transmission tower design. Proposed element models are truss element model, beam element model, and combined beam-truss element model. The static finite element analysis shows that there's a moment distribution between a mainpost member and the other bracing member.
The main objectives of this study are to compare the obtained mechanical characteristics of reduced-scale model materials with those of the prototype and to provide the information on the best selection of materials. Manufacturing techniques on the micro-concrete and reduced reinforcement are introduced. The test results of these materials are shown to be satisfactory with regard to the similitude requirement. The simple beam tests were performed to verify similitude in the bond behavior between micro-concrete and reduced reinforcement. Those results also prove that these manufacturing and experimental techniques are useful and reliable for reduced-scale model tests.
Based on the orthotropic hypoelasticity formulation, a triaxial constitutive model of concrete is proposed. To account for increasing ductility in high confinement of concrete, the ductility enhancement is considered using so called the strain enhancement factor. It is also developed a three-dimensional finite element model for reinforced concrete structural members based on the proposed constitutive law of concrete with the smeared crack approach. The concrete confinement effects due to the beam-column joint are investigated through numerical examples for simple beam and structural beam member. Concrete at compression fibers in the vicinity of beam-column joint behaves dominant not only by the uniaxial compressive state but also by the biaxial and triaxial compressive states. For the reason of the severe confinement of concrete in the beam-column joint, the flexural critical cross-section is observed at a small distance away from the beam-column joint. These observations should be utilized for the economic design when the concrete structural members are subjected to high confinement due to the influence of beam-column joint.
Forced vibration analysis of a simple supported viscoelastic nanobeam is studied based on modified couple stress theory (MCST). The nanobeam is excited by a transverse triangular force impulse modulated by a harmonic motion. The elastic medium is considered as Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation. The damping effect is considered by using the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model. The inclusion of an additional material parameter enables the new beam model to capture the size effect. The new non-classical beam model reduces to the classical beam model when the length scale parameter is set to zero. The considered problem is investigated within the Timoshenko beam theory by using finite element method. The effects of the transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia are included according to the Timoshenko beam theory. The obtained system of differential equations is reduced to a linear algebraic equation system and solved in the time domain by using Newmark average acceleration method. Numerical results are presented to investigate the influences the material length scale parameter, the parameter of the elastic medium and aspect ratio on the dynamic response of the nanobeam. Also, the difference between the classical beam theory (CBT) and modified couple stress theory is investigated for forced vibration responses of nanobeams.

In case of bus rollover, the body structure of the bus should be designed to ensure the survival space for passengers. So, this study focuses on evaluating rollover strength through a computer simulation using the commercial code, LS-DYNA3D at the initial stage of vehicle development. For this study, section structure was modeled using a simple beam element, and impact boundary conditions required by ECE(Economic Commission for Europe) regulation No.66 were applied. In order to confirm the validity of the beam element bus model, the results compared with the test results and shell element bus model. The analysis errors from beam element bus model are due to the difference in strain energy of joint area between beam and shell model. In this study, a method for the joint modeling was suggested by using nonlinear springs to which the collapse mechanisms were applied.
In this paper, the effect of material elasticity was evaluated through a simple model as proposed by Wang and Yu (1991), for yield mechanisms of a cantilever beam under tip pulse loading. The beam was assumed rigid-perfectly plastic but instead of the usual fully clamped constraints at its root, an elastic-perfectly plastic rotational spring was introduced there so the system had a certain capacity to absorb elastic energy. Compared with a rigid-perfectly plastic beam without a spring root, the present beam-spring model showed differences in the initial plastic hinge position and the minimum magnitude of the dynamic force needed to produce a plastic failure. It was also shown that various failure responses may happen while the hinge travels along the beam segment towards the root, rather than a unique response mode as in a rigid perfectly plastic analysis.
Experience of previous earthquakes shows that a considerable portion of concrete precast buildings sustain relatively large damages especially at the beam-column joints where the damages are mostly caused by bar slippage. Precast concrete buildings have a kind of discontinuity in their beam-column joints, so reinforcement details in this area is too important and have a significant effect on the seismic behavior of these structures. In this study, a relatively simple and efficient nonlinear model is proposed to simulate pre- and post-elastic behavior of the joints in usual practice of precast concrete building. In this model, beam and column components are represented by linear elastic elements, dimensions of the joint panel are defined by rigid elements, and effect of slip is taken into account by a nonlinear rotational spring at the end of the beam. The proposed method is validated by experimental results for both internal and external joints. In addition, the seismic behavior of the precast building damaged during Bojnord earthquake 13 May 2017, is investigated by using the proposed model for the beam-column joints. Damage unexpectedly inducing the precast building in the moderate Bojnord earthquake may confirm that bearing capacity of the precast building was underestimated without consideration of joint behavior effect.

Buckling Restrained Braced (BRB) frames have been widely used as an efficient seismic load resisting system in recent years mostly due to their symmetric and stable hysteretic behavior and significant energy dissipation capacity. In this study, to provide a better understanding of the behavior of BRB frames with various beam-column connections, a numerical study using non-linear finite element (FE) analysis is conducted. All models are implemented in the Abaqus software package following an explicit formulation. Initially, the results of the FE model are verified with experimental data. Then, diverse beam-column connections are modeled for the sake of comparison from the shear capacity, energy dissipation and frame hysteresis behavior points of view until appropriate performance is assessed. The considered connections are divided into three different categories: (1) simple beam-column connections including connection by web angle and connection by seat angle; (2) semi-rigid connection including connection by web and seat angles; and (3) rigid beam-column connections by upper-lower beam plates and beam connections with web and flange splices. Results of the non-linear FE analyses show that these types of beam-column connections have little effect on the maximum story drift and shear capacity of BRB frames. However, the connection type has a significant effect on the amount of energy dissipation and hysteresis behavior of BRB frames. Also, changes in length and thickness of the angles in simple and semi-rigid connections and changes in length and thickness of plates in rigid connections have slight effects (less than 4%) on the overall frame behavior.
The axially moving thin beam-plates exposed to sudden thermal loadings may experience severe vibrations through the thermal shock process. For accurate prediction of the thermal shock-induced vibrations, this paper develops a spectral element model for axially moving thermoelastic beam-plates. The spectral element model which is represented by spectral element matrix is formulated from the frequency-dependent dynamic shape functions which satisfy the governing equations in the frequency-domain. Thus, when compared with the classical finite element model in which simple polynomial functions are used as the shape functions, the spectral element model can provide exact solution by treating a whole uniform structure member as a single finite element, regardless of its length.

In this paper a new truss modeling technique for describing the beam shear resistance mechanism is proposed based on the reinterpretation of the well-known relationship between shear and the rate of change of bending moment in a reinforced concrete beam subjected to combined shear and moment loads. The core of the model is that a new perspective on the shear resistance can be gained by viewing the internal stress filed in terms of the superposition of two base components of shear resistance; arch action and beam action. The arch action can be described as a simple tied-arch which is consisted of a curved compression chord and a tension tie of the longitudinal steel, while the beam action between the two chords can be modeled as a membrane shearing element with forming a smeared truss action. The compatibility of deformation associated to the two action is taken into account by employing an experimental factor or internal state force factor a. Then the base equation of V=dM/dx is numerically duplicated. The new model was examined by the 362 experimental results. The shear strength predicted by the internal force state factor a show better correlation with the tested values than the present shear design.
