  • This paper aims to focus on the microwave processing of thick films which is a fast, cheap technique and could be the alternative to the currently used conventional high temperature processing technique. Microwave processing has gained worldwide acceptance as a novel method for heating and sintering a variety of materials, as it offers specific advantages in terms of speed, energy efficiency, process simplicity, finer microstructures and lower environmental hazards. Silver conducting thick films were prepared and processed in the household microwave oven. The films sintered at different time period by keeping the other parameter such as microwave power, film thickness etc constant. The microstructure analysis revealed that the surface morphology of the microwave processed films become compact with respect to the processing time. The sheet resistance for microwave sintered silver films is in the range of 0.003 to $1.207{\Omega}/{\Box}$ where as the films fired at 750 and $850^{\circ}C$ showed the resistance of 0.009 and $0.003{\Omega}/{\Box}$ which can be comparable. The results revealed that the microstructure of the microwave sintered films has more uniform and compact surface than that of the conventionally fired films. The paper reports upon the preparation of silver thick film by screen printing technique and processing the same by microwave which also compared with the conventionally processed thick films.

  • The chemical synthesis of anisotropic defective polyaniline/Ag composite (PANI/Ag) is explored using silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) as the precursor material. This study provides a simple method for the formation of PANI/Ag nanocomposites at two different aniline concentrations $5{\mu}l$ (PANC5) and $10{\mu}l$ (PANC10). The composite PANC5 exhibits UV-Visible absorption peaks at 436 nm and 670 nm whereas, PANC10 exhibits absorption peaks at 446 nm and 697 nm. This shift is caused by the strong interaction between polyaniline and silver. The characterized FTIR peaks observed at around $3410cm^{-1}$ (PANC5) and $3420cm^{-1}$ (PANC10) was due to the N-H stretching vibrations. The appearance of a broad band instead of a sharp peak can be attributed due to the presence of a high concentration of N-H groups in the nanocomposite. The TEM images show that the sample contains defective spherical, truncated triangular and rod shaped particles. The results showed that the PANI/Ag nanocomposites are composed of nano-sized particles of 43-53 nm that contain Ag domains of 33-37 nm with polymer thickness 5.7-11.2 nm at two different aniline concentrations.

  • A metal mesh TCE film is fabricated using a series of processes such as UV imprinting of a transparent trench pattern (with a width of $2-5{\mu}m$) onto a PET film, filling it with silver paste, wiping of the surface, and heat-curing the silver paste. In this work nanosized (40-50 nm) silver particles are synthesized and mixed with submicron (250-300 nm)-sized silver particles to prepare silver paste for the fabrication of metal mesh-type TCE films. The filling of these silver pastes into the patterned trench layer is examined using a specially designed filling machine and the rheological testing of the silver pastes. The wiping of the trench layer surface to remove any residual silver paste or particles is tested with various mixture solvents, and ethyl cellosolve acetate (ECA):DI water = 90:10 wt% is found to give the best result. The silver paste with 40-50 nm Ag:250-300 nm Ag in a 10:90 wt% mixture gives the highest electrical conductance. The metal mesh TCE film obtained with this silver paste in an optimized process exhibits a light transmittance of 90.4% and haze at 1.2%, which is suitable for TSP application.

  • Silver nanowire-based transparent electrodes are very attractive as a next-generation flexible and transparent electrode that can replace ITO-based flexible electrodes because they have excellent conductivity, transmittance and mechanical flexibility. However, weak understanding of the silver nanowire solution for the fabrication of silver nanowire-based transparent electrodes often cause abnormal operation of the electrical device or peeling problem of the electrode films when applied to electronic devices. Here, we studied a Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) adhesion promoter, which is one of the additives for silver nanowire solution, to improve the understanding of silver nanowire solution. In detail, it is characterized how the HPMC changes the properties of silver nanowire solution and silver nanowire film, which is fabricated with silver nanowire solution including the HPMC adhesion promoter. As the characteristics of solution, polar surface tension and dispersive surface tension were measured. As the film characteristics, surface energy, surface morphology, silver nanowire density, and sheet resistance were analyzed.

  • We have synthesized disc-like large silver nanomaterials that have nanostructured bumps on the surface using smaller nanoplate seeds. The size and shape of the bumpy nanostructures are rationally controlled by changing the concentrations of nanoplate seeds, silver ion, reductant, and citrate ion. Importantly, the synthetic mechanism of these bumpy nanostructures is remarkably similar to that of the conventional seed-mediated growth based on tiny seeds. We have further investigated the catalytic properties of the bumpy nanostructures for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, which is associated with a concomitant color change from yellow to colorless.

  • Antibacterial behaviors of PAN-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) containing silver metal were investigated. The effects of surface and pore structures of the ACFs were studied by $N_2$/77 K adsorption and D-R plot as a function of silver loading content. The antibacterial activities were investigated by a dilution test against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus; gram positive) and Klebsiella pnemoniae (K. pnumoniae; gram negative). As experimental results, the ACFs showed some decreases in specific surface areas, micropore volumes, and total pore volume with an increase of silver content. However, the antibacterial activities of the ACFs were strongly increased against S. aureus as well as K. pnumoniae, which could be attributed to the presence of antibacterial metal in the ACFs system.

  • The sintering behavior of silver-oxide glass composite thick-film has been studied with varing glass content. It is shown that during heat treatment glass became liquid phase to deeply affect the microstructure development of the silver particles and to control the physical properties of the thick-films. As glass content increased, the initial repacking of silver particles took place rapidly but the homogeneities of the microstructure showed different features. When the glass content was over some range, the silver particles exuded glass to decrease net energy and glass formed liquid pools separated from the solid skeletons. Finally the relations between the microstructures and electrical properties of the thick-film were discussed.

  • The effects of sub-ppm levels of $H_2S$ and the adsorbed water on the atmospheric corrosion of silver were studied with In situ weight balance to study the effect of the adsorbed water on the kinetic behavior and to determine the rate-controlling step, with XPS to analyze the tarnish film, and with calculation of phase equilibrium to predict the stable solid phase, the concentrations of dissolved species ($Ag^-$, $H^+$, $S^{2-}$, $HS^-$) and the equilibrium potentials ($E_{Ag^+/Ag}$, $E_{H^+/H_2}$, $E_{O_2/O^{2-}$). The results of weight measurements showed that oxygen was required for the sulfidation of silver in 100 ppb $H_2S$ and humidified environments enhanced the tarnished rate and oxidizing power. In addition, the rate determining step for tarnishing silver was shown to be changed to transport though the tarnish film.
