Environmental Condition for the Butt-Rot of Conifers by Cauliflower Mushroom (Sparassis crispa) and Wood Quality of Larix kaempferi Damaged by the Fungus (꽃송이버섯에 의한 침엽수 심재부후 발생환경 및 낙엽송 피해목의 재질 특성)

  • Cauliflower mushroom (Sparassis crispa) is recently recognized as a new edible and/or medicinal mushroom cultivated with conifers. By the way, the mushroom is notorious as a brown-rot fungus that causes a buttrot of larch. So, there should be a careful consideration to apply the mushroom cultivation in coniferous stand. This study was conducted to clarify the seriousness of heartwood decay on conifers such as larch by cauliflower mushroom with surveying the mushroom producing environment and to examine whether the cultivation of cauliflower mushroom produce any problem in conifer stands or not. The mushroom occurred in various coniferous stands such as Larix kaempferi, Pinus koraiensis, P. densiflora and Abies holophylla on fertile soils with adequate moisture. Soil texture of the mushroom producing site was comparatively fine compared to general forest soils; sandy loam, loam and silty loam. Soil pH ranged from 4.6 to 5.2, and organic matter contents were 4~11%, which showed relatively wide range. We could find S. crispa by a DNA technique from the wood that seemed to have no heartwood decay by naked eyes. The damaged wood showed 30% higher moisture contents than that of sound wood, while the compressive strength was 30% lowered down compared to that of sound wood. The fungus may invade conifers through the scars occurred on roots or stems, in this case spore dispersion of the mushroom takes a great role. Thus, we concluded that forest tending activities need to be applied with considering the invasion of S. crispa, and cultivation of cauliflower mushroom in forest should be attempted very carefully. By the way, we also infer that conifer stands can be nurtured without heartwood decay by S. crispa if the stand be managed in good aeration conditions by proper silvicultural practices such as sanitary thinning.

Growth, Rice Yield and Edible Quality of Rice under Naturally Reseeded Chinese Milk Vetch Cropping System (자운영 지속재배시 벼 생육, 수량 및 미질)

  • Growth, milled rice yield and edible quality of rice in naturally reseeded Chinese milk vetch(CMV)-rice cropping system was compared with those in rice mono cropping on silty loam soil in Milyang from 2006-2008. Practicing natural reseeding technology recorded high CMV reseeding stand ranging from 565-805 plants $m^{-2}$ and resulting in the production of 13.0-17.0 kg N/10a from the CMV plant biomass which is greater than the recommendation rate of 9 kgN/10a. The plant height of rice plant grown in natural reseeding field is shorter at tillering stage but it was similar to the rice mono cropping at later stage. Dry matter production had similar trend to plant height. On the other hand, the leaf color in naturally reseeded CMV-rice cropping system was similar to the rice mono cropping up to panicle heading stage but it was high at mature stage, indicating that the nitrogen was provided by the CMV decomposition until later stage of rice. The yield components such as culm number $m^{-2}$ was greater and 1,000-brown rice weight was heavier than those of rice mono cropping but the ripened grain ratio was lower in naturally reseeded CMV-rice cropping system. Milled rice yield of naturally reseeded CMV-rice cropping system was similar to that of rice mono cropping. However, head rice percentage of milled rice was lower due to low ripened grain ratio. This result indicates that natural CMV reseeding technology can completely replace chemical fertilizer in CMV-rice cropping system.

Settlement Instrumentation of Greenhouse Foundation in Reclaimed Land (간척지 온실 기초의 침하량 검토)

  • This study examined the settlement of a 1-2W type greenhouse using a timber pile, which was recently established on Gyehwa-do reclaimed land, in order to obtain base data for the construction of a greenhouse on reclaimed land. The results of this study are as follows. foundation and timber pile increased over time, irrespective of the interior and exterior of the upon investigation of the ground, it was confirmed that there was no soft rock stratum (bedrock), and that a sedimentary stratum existed under the fill deposit, which is estimated to have been reclaimed during the site renovation. It was also found that a weathered zone was located under the fill deposit and sedimentary stratum, and that the soil texture of the entire ground floor consisted of clay mixed with sand, silty clay, and granite gneiss, in that order, regardless of boreholes. In addition, the underground water level was 0.3m below ground, regardless of boreholes. Despite a slight difference, the settlement of the greenhouse or measurement sites (channels). With regard to the pillar inside the greenhouse, except in the case of CH-2, the data at a site located on the side wall of the greenhouse (wind barrier side) indicated vibrations of relatively larger amplitude. Moreover, the settlement showed a significant increase during a certain period, which was subsequently somewhat reversed. Based on these phenomena, it was verified that the settlement range of each site in the interior and exterior of the greenhouse was between 1.0 and 7.5mm at this time, except in the case of CH-1. The results of the regression analysis indicated good correlation, with the coefficient of determination by site ranging between 0.6362 and 0.9340. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination ranged between 0.6046 and 0.8822 on the exterior of the greenhouse, which is lower than inside the greenhouse, but still indicates significant correlation.
