Porous carbon fiber composites (CFCs) having variable specific surface area ranging 35~1150 $\m^2$/g were reacted to produce silicon carbide fiber composites with SiO vapor generated from a mixture of Si and $SiO_2$ at 1673 K for 2 h under vacuum. Part of SiO vapor generated during conversion process condensed on to the converted fiber surface as amorphous silica. Chemical analysis of the converted CFCs resulting from reaction showed that the products contained 27~90% silicon carbide, 7~18% amorphous silica and 3~63% unreacted carbon, and the composition depended on the specific carbide, 7~18% amorphous silica and 3~63% unreacted carbon, and the composition depended on the specific surface area of CFCs. CFC of higher specific surface area yielded higher degree of conversion of carbon to silicon and conversion products of lower mechanical strength due to occurrence of cracks in the converted caron fiber. As the conversion of carbon to silicon carbide proceeded, pore size of converted CFCs increased as a result of growth of silicon carbide crystallites, which is also linked to the crack formation in the converted fiber.

Silicon nanowire devices fabricated by bottom-up methods are attracted due to their electrical, mechanical, and optical properties. Especially, to functionalize the surface of silicon nanowires by molecules has received interests. The changes in the characteristics of the molecules is delivered directly to the surface of the silicon nanowires so that the silicon nanowire can be utilized as an efficient read-out device by using the electronic state change of molecules. The surface treatment of the silicon nanowire with light-sensitive molecules can change its optical characteristics greatly. In this paper, we present the optical response of a SiNW field-effect-transistor (FET) conjugated with porphyrin molecules. We fabricated a SiNW FET and performed porphyrin conjugation on its surface. The characteristic and the optical response of the device shows a large difference after conjugation while there is not much change of the surface in the SEM observation. It attributed to the existence of few layer porphyrin molecules on the SiNW surface and efficient variation of the surface potential of the SiNW due to light irradiation.
It is important to reduce a reflection of light as a solar cell is device that directly converts the energy of solar radiation to electrical energy in oder to improve efficiency of solar cells. The antireflection coating has proven effective in providing substantial increase in solar cell efficiency. This paper investigates the formation of thin film PSi(porous silicon) layer on the surface of crystalline silicon substrates without other ARC(antirefiection coating) layers. On the other hand the formation of $SO_{2}/SiN_x$ ARC layers on the surface of crystalline silicon substrates. After that, the structure of PSi and $SO_2/SiN_x$ ARC was investigated by SEM and reflectance. The formation of PSi layer and $SO_{2}/SiN_x$ ARC layers on the textured silicon wafer result about 5% in the wavelength region from 0.4 to $1.0{\mu}m$. It is achieved on the textured crystalline silicon solar cell that each efficiency is 14.43%, 16.01%.

Porous silicon(PS) as an excellent light diffuser can be used as an antireflection layer without other antireflection coating(ARC) materials. PS layers were obtained by electrochemical etching(ECE) anodization of silicon wafers in hydrofluoric acid/ethanol/de-ionized(DI) water solution($HF/EtOH/H_2O$). This technique is based on the selective removal of Si atoms from the sample surface forming a layer of PS with adjustable optical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A PS layer with optimal ARC characteristics was obtained in charge density (Q) of 5.2 $C/cm^2$. The weighted reflectance is reduced from 33 % to 4 % in the wavelength between 400 and 1000 nm. The weighted reflectance with optimized PS layers is much less than that obtained with a commercial SiNx ARC on a potassium hydroxide(KOH) pre-textured multi-crystalline silicon(mc-Si) surface.
In this paper, silicon thin-film solar cells(Si- TFSC) and a-Si/c-Si heterojunction solar cells(HJ-cell) are investigated. The Si-TFSC was prepared on glass substrate by depositing $1-3{\mu}m$ thin-film silicons by glow discharge method. The $a-Si:H/{\mu}c-Si:H$ tandem solar cells on textured ZnO:A1 TCO (transparent conducting oxide) showed improved Jsc in top and bottom cells than that on $SnO_2:F$ TCO. This enhancement of jsc resulted from improved light trapping effect by front textured ZnO:A1. The a-Si/c-Si HJ-cells with simple structure without high efficiency features are suffering from low Voc and Jsc. The improvement of front nip and back interface properties by adopting high quality silicon-films at low temperature should be done both for increasing device performances and production cost.

Silicon (Si) has the potential to improve plant growth and stress tolerance. The study aimed to explore Si-involving plant responses and molecular characterization of different Si-responsive genes in alfalfa. In this study, the exogenous supplementation of Si enhanced plant growth, and biomass yield. Si-acquisition in alfalfa root and shoot was higher in Si-supplemented compared to silicon deficient (-Si) plants, implying Si-acquisition has beneficial on alfalfa plants. As a consequence, the quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) was significantly increased in silicon-sufficient (+Si) plants. The quantitative gene expression analysis exhibited a significant upregulation of the Lsi1, Lsi2, Lsi3, NIP5;1, and NIP6;1 genes in alfalfa roots, while BOR1, BOR4, NIP2, and NIP3 showed no significant variation in their expression. The MEME results further noticed the association of four motifs related to the major intrinsic protein (MIP). The interaction analysis revealed that NIP5;1 and Lsi1 showed a shared gene network with NIP2, BOR1, and BOR4, and Lsi2, Lsi3 and NIP3-1, respectively. These results suggest that members of the major intrinsic proteins (MIPs) family especially Lsi1, Lsi2, Lsi3, NIP5;1, and NIP6;1 genes helped to pass water and other neutral solutes through the cell membrane and those played significant roles in Si uptake and transport in plants. Together, these insights might be useful for alfalfa breeding and genome editing approaches for alfalfa improvement.
Novel porous silicon chip exhibiting dual optical properties, both Frbry-Perot fringe (optical reflectivity) and photoluminescence had been developed and used as chemical sensors. Porous silicon samples were prepared by an electrochemical etch of p-type sillicon wafer (boron-doped, <100> orientation, resistivity 1 - 10 ${\Omega}$). The ething solution was prepared by adding an equal volume of pure ethanol to an aqueous solution of HF (48% by weight). The porous silicon was illuminated with a 300 W tungsten lamp for the duration of etch. Ething was carried out as a two-electrode Kithley 2420 preocedure at an anodic current. The surface of porous silicon was characterized by FT-IR instrument. The porosity of samples was about 80%. Three different types of porous silicon, fresh porous silicon (Si-H termianated), oxidized porous silicon (Si-OH terminated), and surface-derivatized porous silicon (Si-R terminated), were prepared by the thermal oxidation and hydrosilylation. Then the samples were exposed to the wapor of various organics vapors. such as chloroform, hexane, methanol, benzene, isopropanol, and toluene. Both reflectivity and photoluminescence were simultaneously measured under the exposure of organic wapors.
Surface passivation of crystalline silicon(c-Si) surface with a-Si:H thin films has been investigated by using quasi-steady-state photo conductance(QSSPC) measurements. Analyzing the influence of a-Si:H film thickness, process gas ratio, deposition temperature and post annealing temperature on the passivation properties of c-Si, we optimized the passivation conditions at the substrate temperature of $200-250^{\circ}C$. Best surface passivation has been obtained by post-deposition annealing of a-Si:H film layer. Post annealing around the deposition temperature was sufficient to improve the surface passivation for silicon substrates. We obtained effective carrier lifetimes above 5.5 ms on average.

Recently, high electrochemical performance anode materials for lithium ion secondary batteries are of interest. Here, we present silicon-carbon-graphene (Si-C-GR) composites for high performance anode materials of lithium ion secondary battery (LIB). Aerosol process and heat-treatment were employed to prepare the Si-C-GR composites using a colloidal mixture of silicon, glucose, and graphene oxide precursor. The effects of the size of the silicon particles in Si-C-GR composites on the material properties including the morphology and crystal structure were investigated. Silicon particles ranged from 50 nm to 1 ㎛ in average diameter were employed while concentration of silicon, graphene oxide and glucose was fixed in the aerosol precursor. Morphology of as-fabricated Si-C-GR composites was generally the shape of a crumpled paper ball and the Si particles were well wrapped in carbon and graphene. The size range of composites was about from 2.2 to 2.9 ㎛. The composites including silicon particles larger than 200 nm in size exhibited higher performance as LIB anodes such as capacity and coulombic efficiency than silicon particles less than 100 nm, which were about 1500 mAh/g at 100 cycles in capacity and 99% in coulombic efficiency, respectively.
In this study, it was aimed to develop the re-use technology of ultra-fine silicon powders, by-products during the current production process of high purity poly-Si feedstock. For this goal, the compacts of the silicon powders were tried to fabricate by CIP (Cold Isostatic Pressing) method using silicon rubber mold without chemical binder materials. The density ratio of the silicon powder compacts reached 74%. In order to simulate the actual handling and charging conditions of feedstock material in casting process, a shaking test was carried out and mass loss measured. Finally, the silicon powder compacts were melted using a cold crucible induction melting method and the purity assessment was conducted by Hall effect measurement.
