  • Concrete is a most utilized material in the construction industry that have main components. The strength of concrete can be improved by adding some admixtures. Evaluating the impact of fly ash (FA) and silica fume (SF) on the long-term compressive strength (CS) of concrete provokes to find the significant parameters in predicting the CS, which could be useful in the practical works and would be extensible in the future analysis. In this study, to evaluate the effective parameters in predicting the CS of concrete containing admixtures in the long-term and present a fitted equation, the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) method has been used, which could find a relationship between independent and dependent variables. Next, for optimizing the output equation, biogeography-based optimization (BBO), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and hybrid PSOBBO methods have been utilized to find the most optimal conclusions. It could be concluded that for CS predictions in the long-term, all proposed models have the coefficient of determination (R2) larger than 0.9243. Furthermore, MARS-PSOBBO could be offered as the best model to predict CS between three hybrid algorithms accurately.

  • The microstructures of NATM were examined by SEM, FT-IR spectra, tensile properties, mole % of [NCO/OH], and particle size analyzer. Growing concerns in the environment-friendly industries have led to the development of solvent-free formulations that can be cured. We had synthesized NATM(New Austria Tunnel Method) resin having the ability to protect stainless steel against corrosion. Comparing with general NATM resin and coatings, this resin that synthesized with polyurethane and epoxy was highly stronger in intensity and longer durability. Hybrid resin was composed of polyols, MDI, epoxy, silicone surfactant, catalyst and crosslink agent, and fillers. Moreover, fillers such as fume silica not only accelerated the curing rate but also improved the physical property as thermal barriers. The rigid segments of synthetic resin in mechanical properties were due to fume silica and the increase the mole% of [NCO/OH] for corrosion protection. In conclusion, the hybrid resin microstructure with crosslink agent and fume silica are good material for thermosetting coating of metal substrates such as stainless steel.

  • In this study, to enhance the electrical insulation of composite specimens in addition to the improved mechanical properties, the epoxy composite were reinforced with carbon nanotubes and silica particles. Tensile strength, Young's modulus, dynamic mechanical behavior, and electrical resistivity of the specimens were measured with varied contents of the two fillers. The mechanical and electrical properties were discussed, and the experimental results related to the mechanical properties of the specimens were compared with those from several micromechanics models. The hybrid composites specimens with 0.6 wt% of carbon nanotubes and 50 wt% of silica particles showed improved mechanical properties, with increase in tensile strength and Young's modulus up to 11% and 35%, respectively, with respect to those of the baseline specimen. The electrical conductivity of the composite specimens with carbon nanotubes filler also improved. Further, the electrical insulation of the hybrid composites specimens with the two fillers improved in addition to the improvement in mechanical properties.

  • Commercially widely used antitumor agents such as hydroxy urea, 6-mercaptopurine monohydrate, cytosine arabinoside, cyclophosphamide monohydrate and uracil were reacted with 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate and the product hydrolyzed to give silica nanoparticles bound antitumor agents ranging from 10 nm to micron-sized aggregates. The silyl isocyanate derivative was also reacted neat with water to give hybrid organicsilicananoparticles containing $-CH_2-CH_2-CH_2-NH-COOH$ or the corresponding decarboxylated propylamine groups depending on solvent and temperature employed. In vitro tests these functionalized silica nanoparticles were effective in the treatment of malignant tumor cells but had little or no effect on normal cells. Malignant human lung, ovarian, melanoma, CNS(Central nervous system) and colon tumor cells were used in this research. The use of silica as a carrier medium in the present research serves as a model material due to its ready functionalization via silation. The proof of concept established by the results suggests that the technique may be applied to other, more biocompatible carrier nanoparticles.

  • In the present work, modulus of rupture (MOR), flexural toughness properties $(I_{30}\;and\;W_{2.0})$ and workability (slump) of high performance hybrid fiber reinforced concrete (HPHFRC) mixed with micro-fiber (carbon fiber) and macro-fiber (steel fiber), and replaced with a fine mineral admixture such as silica fume (SF) are characterized through the analysis of variance (ANOVA). Data of MOR, $I_{30}(or W_{2.0})$ and slump are used as the characteristic values to estimate flexural performance and workable property of HPHFRC. Specially, an experimental design was Planned according to the fractional orthogoanl nay method to reduce experimental number of times. The experimental results show that steel fiber is a considerable significant factor in MOR and I30 $(W_{2.0})$. Based on the significance of experimental factors about each characteristic factors, the following evaluation can be used: Experiment factors which reduce slump most remarkably are carbon fiber, steel fiber, silica fume order.; Those that improve MOR most significantly are silica fume $({\fallingdotseq}\;carbon\;fiber)$, steel fiber order; Those that increase flexural toughness most distinctly are silica fume, carbon fiber, steel fiber order. It is obtained that the combination of steel fiber $1.0\%$, carbon fiber $0.25\%$ and silica fume $5.0\%$ is the experimental condition that improve MOR and flexural toughness excellently with workability ensured within the experiment.

  • Baroplastic poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA)/polystyrene (PS) blends were prepared by mixing PBA and PS emulsions synthesized by cationic and anionic surfactant, respectively. Interestingly, the heterocoagulation of nanoparticles have found to be affected strongly by emulsion concentration but the blends have been prepared with almost same compositions regardless of the amount of reactants. Utilizing this method, PBA/PS/Si hybrid nano-blends were prepared successfully via electrostatic attraction forces between PBA, PS and silica nanoparticles. The hybrid nano-blend having 2 or 5 wt% of silica was then processed to a semi-transparent film at $25^{\circ}C$ under 13.8 MPa for 10 min, which showed 3.0 MPa of tensile strength and 25 MPa of elastic modulus. Therefore, the heterocoagulation technique can be used for preparing baroplastics with uniform compositions of polymer and silica nanoparticles.

  • In this study, the composite coating materials with improved thermal insulation property were prepared by incorporating the hydrophobic silica aerogel. The surface modification of silica aerogel was performed to obtain UV curable urethane acrylate hybrid coating sols with good compatibility by using surfactant(Brij 56). The polycarbonate substrates were coated by the prepared composites and cured under UV radiation. The incorporation of aerogel with only 10 vol% of content resulted in remarkable improvement by about 28% in the thermal insulation property of the coated film, as compared with substrate. In addition, increasing aerogel content was found to give minor effect on the variation of optical transparency, adhesion, and surface hardness of the coated film.

  • The production of bassinosteroid-like substances of two hybrid types of Korean rice, Jangseongbyeo, Taebackbyeo were investigated. The shoots at the maximum tillering stage were extracted and purified by solvent fractionation, silica gel adsorption chromatography Sephadex LH-20 chromatography, charcoal adsorption chromatography, Bondesil chromatography and HPLC of reverse phase, successively. Biological activities of each purification step were monitored by the rice lamina inclination test. Higher activities against the rice lamina inclination test in the each purification step showed that the shoots of two cultivars biosynthesize brassinosteroids. Two cultivars also showed a similar distribution of biological activities of endogenous brassinosteroids detected by HPLC.

  • The control of wettability of thin films is of great importance and its success surely brings us huge applications such as self-cleaning, antifogging and bio-passive treatments. Usually, the control is accomplished by modifying either surface energy or surface topography of films. In general, hydrophobic surface can be produced by coating low surface energy materials such as fluoropolymer or by increasing surface roughness. In contrast, to enhance the hydrophillicity of solid surfaces, high surface energy and smoothness are required. Silica (SiO2) is environmentally safe, harmless to human body and excellently inert to most chemicals. Also its chemical composition is made up of the most abundant elements on the earth's crest, which means that SiO2 is inherently economical in synthesis. Moreover, modification in chemistry of SiO2 into various inorganic-organic hybrid materials and synthesis of films are easily undertaken with the sol-gel process. The contact angle of water on a flat silica surface on which the Young's equation operates shows ~50o. This is a slightly hydrophilic surface. Many attempts have been made to enhance hydrophilicity of silica surfaces. In recent years, superhydrophilic and antireflective coatings of silica were fabricated from silica nanoparticles and polyelectrolytes via a layer-by-layer assembly and postcalcination treatment. This coating layer has a high transmittance value of 97.1% and a short water spread time to flat of <0.5 s, indicating that both antireflective and superhydrophilic functions were realized on the silica surfaces. In this study, we assessed hydrophillicity and hydrophobicity of silica coating layers that were synthesized using the sol-gel process. Systematic changes of processing parameters greatly influence their surface properties.
