Using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA), mechanical properties like modulus and phase transition temperature of polyester composites of banana fibers (treated and untreated) are measured simultaneously. The shifting of phase transition temperature is observed in some treatments. The performance of the composite depends to a large extent on the adhesion between polymer matrix and the reinforcement. This is often achieved by surface modification of the matrix or the filler. Banana fiber was modified chemically to achieve improved interfacial interaction between the fiber and the polyester matrix. Various silanes and alkalies were used to modify the fiber surface. Chemical modification was found to have a profound effect on the fiber/matrix interaction, which is evident from the values of phase transition temperatures. Of the various chemical treatments, simple alkali treatment with 1% NaOH was found to be the most effective.
Renewable energy industries, including sola cell plants, has been ever increasing ones for reducing fossil fuel consumption and strengthening national energy policy. In this paper we tried to identify occupational health hazards in solar cell-related industries operated in Korea. Poly silicon, silicon ingot and wafer, solar cell and module are major processes for producing solar cells. Poly silicon operations may cause hazards to workers from metal silicon, silanes, silicon, hydro fluoric acid and nitric acid. Solar cells could not be constructed without using metals such as aluminum and silver, acids such as hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid, bases such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, and solvent and phosphorus chloride oxide. Workers in module assembly process may exposed to isopropanol, flux, solders that contain lead, tin and/or copper. To prevent occupational exposure to these hazards, it is essential to identify the hazards in each process and educate workers in industries with proper engineering and administrative control measures.

In recent years the interest in organic/inorganic hybrid materials has increased at a fast rate. Nano organic-inorganic hybrid composites have shown advantages for preparing hard coating layers. Especially, nano hybrid composite has low environmental pollution. It has high transparency, hardness, toughness, thermal dissociation temperature, hydrophobicity by using nano sized inorganic material. There are many ways in which these materials may be synthesized, a typical one being the use of silica and silanes using the sol-gel process. The structure of sol-gel silica evolves as a result of these successive hydrolysis and condensation reactions and the subsequent drying and curing. The sol-gel reactions are catalyzed by acids and produce silica sol solutions. The silica sol grows until they reach a size where a gel transition occurs and a solid-like gel is formed. Colloidal silica(CS)/silane sol solutions were synthesized in variation with parameters such as different acidity and reaction time. In order to understand their physical and chemical properties, sol-gel coating films were fabricated on glass. From all sol-gel solutions, seasoning effect of sol-gel coating layer on glass was observed.

Direct reaction of elemental silicon with a mixture of (dichloromethyl)silanes 1 $[Cl_3-nMenSiCHCl_2:$ n = 0 (a), n = 1(b), n = 2(c), n = 3(d)] and hydrogen chloride has been studied in the presence of copper catalyst using a stirred bed reactor equ ipped with a spiral band agitator at various temperatures from $240^{\circ}C$ to $340^{\circ}C.$ Tris(si-lyl) methanes with Si-H bonds, 3a-d $[Cl_3-nMenSiCH(SiHCl_2)_2]$, and 4a-d $[Cl_3-nMenSiCH(SiHCl_2)(SiCl_3)]$, were obtained as the major products and tris(silyl)methanes having no Si-H bond, 5a-d $[Cl_3-nMenSiCH(SiCl_3)_2]$, as the minor product along with byproducts of bis(chlorosilyl)methanes, derived from the reaction of silicon with chloromethylsilane formed by the decomposition of 1. In addition to those products, trichlorosilane and tetra-chlorosilane were produced by the reaction of elemental silicon with hydrogen chloride. The decomposition of 1 was suppressed and the production of polymeric carbosilanes reduced by adding hydrogen chloride to 1. Cad-mium was a good promoter for and the optimum temperature for this direct synthesis was $280^{\circ}C$.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the characterization of composite resin inlay surface with silane and non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma treatment. Methods: Composite resin inlay was used as a specimen, which was treated by sandblasting + silane and sandblasting + plasma. The untreated specimens were assigned to the control group. Specimens were analyzed for surface roughness, color change, and chemical composition. Statistical analyses were performed using one-way ANOVA test (p<0.05). Results: The present findings showed that the roughness and color changes of the plasma-treated surface were significantly lower than those of the silane-treated surface. In addition, a change in the chemical composition was observed on the plasma-treated surface. Conclusions: Based on the results, non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma could be a potential tool for the cementation of composite resin inlay.
In this study, octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) has been used to replace fluoro-silanes which are much more expensive than OTS. In order to improve the mechanical and adhesive properties of coating layers, inorganic binders were separately synthesized based on sol-gel reaction in acidic condition. Since the synthesized silica nanoparticles gave only nano-scaled roughness, superhydrophobicity is not well obtained. Here, we present a new simple approach by intentionally inducing particle aggregation in the solution which is controlled by adjusting solvent amount. With selecting suitable sizes of silica nanoparticles, superhydrophobic surfaces were obtained with increasing the amount of organic solvents after surface hydrophobization using OTS, and an extremely water-repellent behavior was observed with zero sliding angle. This superhydrophobicity was achived only for the dielectric constant lower than 25, regardless of the composition of solvent, meaning that the dielectric constant could be an excellent indicator for fabricating superhydrobic surfaces induced by particle aggregation in the solution.

The advent of photonic technologies in the field of communications and data transmission has been heavily increasing the demand in integrated optical (IO) circuits capable of accomplishing not only simple tasks like signal, but also more sophisticated functions like all-optical signal routing or active multiplexing/demultiplexing. In the last decade, sol-gel technology has been widely used to prepare optical materials. Sol-gel processes show many promises for the development of low-loss, high-performance glass integrated optical circuits. However, crack formation is likely to occur during heat treatment in thick gel films. In order to overcome the critical thickness limitation, the organic-modified silicate has been widely used. In this case coating matrices have been prepared from the organo-silanes of T structures, acidic catalyst and the as-prepared gel films have been heat-treated below 200$^{\circ}C$ to avoid the crack formation and the degradation of organic components. However, the films prepared in the acidic condition and the low heat temperature make the films contain high OH groups which is the major optical loss function. In this work, C$\sub$6/H$\sub$5/SiO$\sub$1.5/ films were prepared on silicon substrate by sol-gel method using base catalyst in a PTMS/NH$_4$OH/H$_2$O/C$_2$H$\sub$5/OH system. The sol showed spinable viscosity at 50 wt% of solid content, and neglectable viscosity change with time. The films were crack-free and transparent after curing at 450 $^{\circ}C$, and highly condensed to minimize OH content in C$\sub$6/H$\sub$5/SiO$\sub$1.5/ networks. The effects of heat treatment of the films are characterized on the critical thickness, the chemical composition and the refractive indices by means of SEM, FT-IR, TGA, prism coupler, respectively.

A molding-type power inductor is an inductor that uses a hybrid material that is prepared by mixing a ferrite metal powder coated with an insulating layer and an epoxy resin, which is injected into a coil-embedded mold and heated and cured. The fabrication of molding-type inductors requires various techniques such as for coil formation and insertion, improving the magnetic properties of soft magnetic metal powder, coating an insulating film on the magnetic powder surface, and increasing the packing density by well dispersing the powder in the epoxy resin. Among these aspects, researches on additives that can disperse the metal soft magnetic powder having the greatest performance in the epoxy resin with high charge have not been reported yet. In this study, we investigated the effect of silanes, KBM-303 and KBM-403, and a commercial dispersant on the dispersion of metal soft magnetic powders in epoxy resin. The sedimentation height and viscosity were measured, and it was confirmed that the silane KBM-303 was suitable for dispersion. For this silane, the packing density was as high as about 72.49%. Moreover, when 1.2 wt% of dispersant BYK-103 was added, the packing density was about 80.5%.
Transparent plastic substrates require an improvement in properties such as surface hardness and thermal stability for optical applications. In this study, UV-curable organic/inorganic hybrids were synthesized to improve those properties. In order to make the optimum dispersion of inorganic component into the organic matrix, an in situ synthetic method was applied based on sol-gel reaction. Dispersion of the inorganic component in the organic urethane acrylate matrix was improved by using a proper combination of sol-gel reaction and fast UV-curing resulting in the formation of the transparent coating layer. Various alkoxy silanes were employed to vary both the degree of curing and coating properties of UV-curable organic/inorganic hybrids. UV-cured organic/inorganic hybrid coatings showed an improved surface hardness and thermal resistance depending on the content of inorganic component.
