The characteristics of elastic waves emanating from crack initiation in 2024 and 5052 aluminum alloys subject to static and fatigue loading are investigated through laboratory experiments. The objective of the study is to determine difference in the properties of the signals generated from static and fatigue tests and also to examine if the sources of the waves could be identified from the temporal and spectral characteristics of the acoustic emission (AE) waveforms. The signals are recoded using non-resonant, flat, broadband transducers attached to the surface of the alloy specimens. The time dependence and power spectra of the signals recorded during the tests were examined and classified according to their special features. Three distinct types of signals were observed. The waveforms and their power spectra were found to be dependent on the material and the type of fracture associated with the signals. Analysis of the waveforms indicated that some signals could be attributed to plastic deformation associated with static tests. The potential application of the approach in health monitoring of aging aircraft structures using a network of surface mounted broadband sensors is discussed.
The sounds of exhaust emissions of automobiles are independent sound sources which are nothing to do with voices. We have no information for the sources of voices and exhaust sounds. Accordingly, Independent Component Analysis which is one of the Blind Source Separaton methods was used to segregate two source signals from each mixed signals. Maximum Likelyhood Estimation was applied to the signals came through the stereo microphone to segregate the two source signals toward the maximization of independence. Since there is no clue to find whether it is speech signal or not, the coefficients of the slope was calculated by the autocovariances of the signals in frequcency domain. Noise remover for speech signals was implemented by coupling the two algorithms.

Acoustic emission signals due to leak from circular holes of 0.4, 1, 2 and 4mm diameter and rectangular slits of different geometry having the same cross section as 4mm diameter hole was studied both analytically and experimentally. Acoustic emission signals from a wide-band type transducer were transformed to digital signals through a digital oscilloscope, and $V_{rms}$ and frequency spectrum were obtained by processing digital signals. Relationships between acoustic parameters and fluid mechanical parameters were derived analytically. A quadrapole aerodynamic model was applied in the analysis of leak from the circular holes and $V_{rms}$ was found to be proportional to the root square of leak rate through the circular hole. A modified model based on dipole source mechanism and laminar equivalent diameter was applied in the analysis of leak signals from the rectangular slits. In the case of constant pressure, $V_{rms}$ increased as the laminar equivalent diameter of slit decreased. In the case of constant laminar equivalent diameter, however the result was similar to that for leak from the circular hole. The frequency spectra of leak signals shows the same frequency characteristics irrespective of the pressure difference.rence.

This paper presents the remote measurement of the ECU signals adopted with KWP 2000 protocol using the wireless communication technique of bluetooth. The bluetooth technology will be the most promising network paradigm which can open the new area in the information technology. Especially, bluetooth module is able to link all the electrical products and personal computers to cellular phone or PDA. This research has a try to design a wireless measurement model of ECU signal based on the car telemery system using bluetooth device. In order to measure the ECU signals, we designed the interface circuits which is able to communicate between the ECU system and the terminal circuits according to the ISO, SAE regulation of communication protocol standard. A microprocessor S3c341 OX is used for the system control and communication of ECU signals. The embedded system software is programmed to measure the ECU signals using the ARM compiler and ANCI C based on Micro/OS-II kernel to communicate between two bluetooth modules using bluetooth stack. The remote measurement of ECU signals using the bluetooth was designed and implemented to evaluate the performance of wireless network to the transmit measurement data. The possibility for the remote measurement of the self diagnosis signals of ECU adopted with KWP2000 protocol verified through the developed systems and algorithms in embedded system.
In this paper, frequency spectra of AE signals detected from respective the insulation deterioration were analysed to under ac high-voltage application using epoxy resin sample and insulation oil. Also, frequency spectra of AE signals generated from the load currents in the actual operating transformer of 500[kVA] under distribution system of 22.9[kVJ] were also analysed to distinguish the AE signals due to void discharges from the magnetic circuit noises in transformer. As the experimental results, we could distinguish the AE signals whether those signals were caused due to the void discharges or due to the magnetic circuit noises by analyzing the frequency spectrum of AE signals.

The Monte Carlo method was used to evaluate the reliability of crash discrimination algorithms. Through the Fast Fourier Transformation, crash pulses obtained during frontal crash tests of a mini van and a sports utility vehicle were transformed to signals in the frequency domain, and the signals were divided into basic signals and changeable signals. The changeable signals were modified through random generation, and they were combined with the basic signals. Then, the combined signals were transferred back to the time domain. In this way numerous crash pulses could be generated. For the generated pulses, crash discrimination algorithms were evaluated by examining whether they did not result in air bag deployment for the pulses requiring no air bag deployment and whether they resulted in time-to-fires faster than required time-to-fires for the pulses requiring air bag deployment. The crash discrimination algorithm in which the absolute value of the deceleration change multiplied by the velocity change or the summation of the absolute value of the deceleration change was used as a metric was Proven to be highly reliable.

By using an XPM (Cross Phase Modulation) wavelength converter, an all-optical AND gate, which is one of six fundamental logic gates, has been demonstrated. The wavelengths for probe and pump signals are 1553.8 and 1545 nm, respectively. First, characteristics of the XPM wavelength converter have been studied. When both probe and pump signals are driven by high power, the output power of the XPM wavelength is high. Based on this fact and the experiment, the all-optical AND gate has been porved. Probe and pump signals are transformed to pulse signals by using Mach-Zehnder modulator, which is induced by a pulse generator. Square pulse signals that are similar to the format of NRZ signals have been generated. By coupling two pulse signals into the XPM wavelength converter, AND characteristics in substantiated.
This study attempts to test the classifying performance of a neural network and thereby examine its applicability to the signals distorted in a shallow water environment. Linear frequency modulated(LFM) signals are simulated by using an acoustic model and also measured through sea experiment. The network is constructed to have three layers and trained on both data sets. To get normalized power spectra as feature vectors, the study considers the three transforms : shot-time Fourier transform (STFT), wavelet transform (WT) and pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution (PWVD). After trained on the simulated signals over water depth, the network gives over 95% performance with the signal to noise ratio (SNR) being up to-10 dB. Among the transforms, the PWVD presents the best performance particularly in a highly noisy condition. The network performs worse with the summer sound speed profile than with the winter profile. It is also expected to present much different performance by the variation of bottom property. When the network is trained on the measured signals, it gives a little better results than that trained on the simulated data. In conclusion, the simulated signals are successfully applied to training a network, and the trained network performs well in classifying the signals distorted by a surrounding environment and corrupted by noise.
We are exposed to the various external stimuli input from the environment, which cause emotional changes based on the characteristics of the stimuli. Unfortunately, there are noquantitative results on relationship between human sensibility and the characteristics of physiological signals. The objective of this study was to quantify EEG signals evoked by visual stimulation based on the assumption that the analysis of the variability on the characteristics of the EEG waveform may provide the significant information regarding changes in psychological states of the subject. Seven university students were participated in this study. The experiment was devised with eleven experimental conditions, which are control and ten different types of visual stimulation based on IAPS(International Affective Picture Systems). Seven subjects were used to obtain EEGs while introducing visual stimulation. Wavelet transformation was employed to analyze the EEG signals. Most Positive and negative emotional response were pairely compared. The results showed that the reconstructed signals at the decomposition level revealed the different energy value on the EEG signals. Also, general patterns of EEG signals in rest state compare with negative and positive stimulus were found. This study could be extended to estabish an algorithm which distinguishes psychophysiological states of the subjects exposed to the visual stimulation.
A Vowel of speech signals are multicomponent signals composed of AM-FM components whose instantaneous frequency and instantaneous amplitude are time-varying. The changes of emotion states cause the variation of the instantaneous frequencies and the instantaneous amplitudes of AM-FM components. Therefore, it is important to estimate exactly the instantaneous frequencies and the instantaneous amplitudes of AM-FM components for the extraction of key information representing emotion states and changes in speech signals. In tills paper, firstly a method decomposing speech signals into AM - FM components is addressed. Secondly, the fundamental frequency of vowel sound is estimated by the simple method based on the spectrogram. The estimate of the fundamental frequency is used for decomposing speech signals into AM-FM components. Thirdly, an estimation method is suggested for separation of the instantaneous frequencies and the instantaneous amplitudes of the decomposed AM - FM components, based on Hilbert transform and the demodulation property of the extended Fourier transform. The estimates of the instantaneous frequencies and the instantaneous amplitudes can be used for modification of the spectral distribution and smooth connection of two words in the speech synthesis systems based on a corpus.
