  • Location management schemes dealing with location information of moving terminals play an important role in the personal communications systems (PCS). Since the location management involves heavy signaling traffics to update the location information, reducing the location update cost becomes a critical research issue. This paper proposes a location management scheme which reduces the location update cost by employing the hierarchical structure in PCS environment. The paper also develops analytical models to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. The results obtained from the performance evaluation shows that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional schemes in terms of the location update rates. Also, the difference in the performance becomes larger as the size of the location area (LA) becomes smaller and as the residual time of the mobile user becomes smaller.

  • An efficient mobility management for mobile stations plays an important role in mobile communication network. This paper studios a zone-based registration (ZBR) that is implemented in most of mobile communication systems. We introduce the mobility management scheme that combines a zone-based registration and a selective paging (SP) and analyze its performance. We set up an analytical model based on 2-dimensional random walk mobility model and evaluate the performance of the proposed mobility management scheme using the model to determine the optimal size of location area which will result in the minimum signaling traffic on radio channels. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed mobility management scheme under various circumstances.

  • In mobile wireless network efficient location management for tracking and finding mobile users is a critical issue. The traffic for location update can be excessive, especially at the base stations that are near to the location area (LA) boundaries. In this paper we propose a new location update scheme which can significantly reduce the signaling traffic for location update. It is based on the virtual layer approach employing SubMSCs. The virtual layer is laid upon the original layer of LAs such that the mobile terminals moving around the boundary cells of adjacent LAs become to move within a virtual LA. As a result, the location update traffic is substantially reduced compared to overlapping scheme which is the most recent and efficient location update scheme.

  • This paper proposes an efficient micro mobility scheme to support user mobility inside an access network which employs Ipv6. The proposed scheme, namely SMM(Sparse-mode Multicast for mobility), utilizes a class of multicast protocol, PIM-SM, in the visited access network to reduce signaling to the home agent as well as to the correspondent node and to minimize packet loss during the handoff when mobile user changes its point of attachment frequently. Through the simulation, the performance of the proposed SMM is analyzed and compared with those of Mobile nv6 and for the case which adpots PIM-DM. The result shows that SMM provides significantly better performance in terms of packet loss that is invariant to transmission rate and packet size.

  • The proposed mechanism has an group management server, which manages the information about both the receivers and the senders. Any receiver can dynamically join/leave the multicast VC. The signaling overload due to group membership changes is not concentrated on the sender, but it is distributed to many receivers for the scalability improvement. The associated signaling messages propagates from the receivers to the ATM switch dedicated to the multicast VC, and hence no signaling overload exists in the shared links there is no latency for the receiver to wait. Our proposed scheme is superior in the view of scalability, the efficiency and the latency to other schemes.

  • In this paper, the new location management scheme based on region and movement threshold has been proposed in order to minimize the required cost to handle the resource location management signaling traffics under the wire/wireless convergent networks when the users are moving around the cold and hot regions. In this scheme, the sequential paging is supposed to be performed according to the movement threshold which can be changed in accordance with the number of movements that each mobile user had made while it is moving around the resource regions. With the proposed scheme, the cost of managing the location management traffics and efficient spectrum assignment overhead can be minimized by placing signaling traffics for location managements and also allocating radio spectrum considering individual movement behaviors.

  • For supporting various mobile networks, this paper proposes a framework of distributed connection admission control, named SmartCAC. Especially, intelligent CAC operations are adopted in terms of interoperation between mobile nodes and mobile networks. This scheme does not need to correct information between networks. Basically vertical handover call can use guard channel that was reserved for handoff, because SmartCAC addresses the identification between vertical handover call and new call, delay and reliability as requirement of QoS for efficient connection control. The scheme also uses mobile terminal speed for network filtering. Especially an extended protocol is proposed to give different network states information to mobile nodes because there have been no ways for mobile nodes to compare the states of different networks. Sophisticated simulation study is performed in order to evaluate SmartCAC in terms of signaling cost. As a result, signaling cost of ours is up to 96% better than that of the existing scheme.

  • This paper introduces a novel repetitive delivery scheme for the left and right views in service-compatible (SC) 3D video that provides full backward compatibility to a legacy DTV system while retaining HD 3D visual quality without additional bandwidth or a codec over the legacy broadcasting channel. The proposed SC delivery scheme transmits individual view sequences of a 3D video in interlaced form, that is, a left-view sequence of a 3DTV program to be used repeatedly is transmitted first and stored locally, and the right-view sequence of the 3D program is then transmitted. This paper specifically describes the signaling, synchronization, and storage format methods used to validate the proposed SC delivery scheme. The experiment results show that the proposed SC delivery scheme can be effectively applied for an SC 3DTV service without degrading the DTV quality using only legacy DTV platforms.

  • This paper proposes both global and local mobility management (MM) scheme improved from Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based Mobility Management scheme (MPLS-MOB) for seamless service in Next Generation Network (NGN). The proposed scheme adds local MM on the existing MPLS-MOB which supports global MM by processing handover signaling by 2.5 layer switching via Label Switch Path (LSP) of MPLS. We numerically analyze and verify that the proposed scheme has lower handover latency time than the existing ones, such as micro-MM methods using MPLS as well as MIP and an interworking scenario between PMIP and MIP.
