  • In this paper, we propose a novel predictive control method, which uses a wavelet neural network as a predictor, for the control of chaotic systems. In our method, we use the gradient descent method for training the parameter of a wavelet neural network. The control signals are directly obtained by minimizing the difference between a reference signal and the output of a wavelet neural network. To verify the efficiency of our method, we apply it to the Doffing and the Henon system, which are a representative continuous and discrete time chaotic system respectively, and compare with the results of generalized predictive control using multi-layer perceptron.

  • Digital input and output modules are widely used to connect digital sensors and actuators to automation systems. Digital I/O modules provide flexible connectivity extension to numerous sensors and actuators and protect systems from high voltages and currents by isolation. Components in digital I/O modules are inevitably affected by operating and environmental conditions, such as high voltage, high current, high temperature, and temperature cycling. Because digital I/O modules transfer signals or isolate the systems from unexpected voltage and current transients, their failures may result in signal transmission failures and damages to sensitive circuitry leading to system malfunction and system shutdown. In this study, the lifetime of optocouplers, one of the critical components in digital I/O modules, was predicted using Bayesian tracking approaches. Accelerated degradation tests were conducted for collecting the critical performance parameter of optocouplers, current transfer ratio (CTR), during their lifetime. Bayesian tracking approaches, including extended Kalman filter and particle filter, were applied to predict the failure. The performance of each prognostic algorithm was then compared using accuracy and robustness-based performance metrics.

  • Among various modern control theories, PID control has been well used for several decades. PID algorithms need some tuning methods which are used for selecting PID parameters. But in some cases various kinds of performance indices are used instead of well-known tuning rules, and so variable type of performance index must be tested so that controllers, output characteristics and disturbance rejection property meet some specifications. In this paper, linear conbinational type of performance index using error signal, time, control input and robustness is used to the PID control of air conditioning system. By use of the 2 DOF PID parmeters minimizing perfromacne index controllers, output characteristics and robustness properties are analyzed. Simulations are done by use of MATLAB with Simulink.

  • The experimental analysis presented aims at the selection of the most optimal machining parameter combination for wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) of STD11. Based on the Taguchi experimental design ($L_{27}$ orthogonal array) method, a series of experiments were performed by considering time-on, voltage, time-off, wire speed, and flow rate as input parameters. The surface roughness was considered responses. Based on the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, the influence of the input parameters on the responses was determined. The optimal machining parameters setting for the minimum surface roughness was found using Taguchi methodology. In order to investigate the effects of process parameters on the surface machined by WEDM, Several experiments are conducted to consider effects of time-on, voltage, time-off, wire speed and flow rate on the surface roughness. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) as well as regression analysis are performed on experimental data. The best results of surface roughness were obtained at higher voltage, lower wire speed, and lower time-on.

  • In wireless communication system, fading is an unavoidable problem. Hence, errors in form of BER are introduced with the transmitted signal. It is necessary to recognize the behavior of these errors in different fading channels. To obtain the mathematical solution for the average bit error rate(BER) of coherent MPSK, some techniques are presented. In this paper, the impact of diversity is also analyzed over slow and flat Rician fading channel. In here, the value of modulation index, M is varied and the effects of its variation are also depicted. So, these performance curves with different diversity values and fading parameter are useful to design and evaluate the radio channel for faithful communication system.

  • This paper describes a calculation method of source level of a ship transient noise, which is one of the important elements for the ship detection. Aim of transient noise measurements is to evaluate of acoustic energy due to singular occurrence, which is therefore defined as non-periodic and short termed events like an attack periscope, a rudder and a torpedo door. In generally, in the case of randomly spaced impulse, the spectrum becomes a broadband random noise with no distinctive pattern. Therefore, frequency analysis is not particularly revealing for type of signal. In the paper, it is performed in time domain to analyze a transient noise. However, a source level of transient noise is required an investigation for multiple frequency band. So, in order to calculate a source level of transient noise, a design of exponential weighting function, convolution, band pass filtering, peak detection, root mean square, and parameter compensation are applied. The effectiveness of this calculation scheme is studied through computer simulations and a sea test. Furthermore, an application of the method is applied in a real case.

  • In this paper, it is investigated that the limitation due to the asymmetry of optical power and chromatic dispersion with respect to optical phase conjugator (OPC) for compensating optical signal distortion of WDM channels in mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) technique is overcame by using OPC position offset and optimal dispersion coefficients of fiber sections, which depend on OPC position offset. It is confirmed that overall WDM channels are efficiently compensated by applying the optimal parameter values obtained from the proposed method into 24 channels ${\times}\;40\;Gbps$ WDM system with non zero - dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) of 1,000 km, such as power penalties of inter-channel are reduce to almost 3.5 dB from the infinite value. It is also confirmed that the flexible design of WDM system with OPC is possible by using the optimal parameters, in which OPC is placed at ${\pm}15\;km$ from 500 km for efficiently compensating overall channels.

  • The optimal AP placement for wireless LAN is important factor for improving service quality and reducing cost. Decision of AP placement is depend on radio signal strength, environment factor and logical area property, which is user's frequently posed place. This paper proposes optimal multiple AP placement method based on radio prediction tool. The proposed method can get flexibility in multiple AP placement using user defined parameter and the optimization design uses Hopfield network algorithm. • The freak wave, also known as New-Year-Wave in the north Atlantic, is relatively large and spontaneous ocean surface wave that can sink even large ships and destroy maritime structures. To understand oceanic conditions that develop freak waves, we simulated and generated two versions of scale-downed waves (1:64 and 1:42) in a numerical wave tank and compared the results with the experiment in wave flume. Both of the breaking and non-breaking waves were generated in the simulation. The numerical simulation was implemented based on the finite volume method and a genetic optimization algorithm. Random values were assigned as the initial values for the parameter in the control function, which produced signals representing the motion of wave-maker. The same signal obtained from the optimization process was used for both of the simulation and the experiment. By varying the object function and restrictions of the simulation, a best profile of design wave was selected based on the characteristics, height and period of simulated waves. Results showed that the simulation and experiment with the scale of 1:42 agreed better with freak waves in the natural condition. The presented simulation method will contribute to saving the time and cost for conducting subsequent response analyses of motion under freak waves in the course of the model test for ship and maritime structure.

  • Nowadays, most micro-patterns are manufactured during flow line production. However, a conventional rotary chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) system has a limited throughput for the fabrication of large and flexible electronics. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel linear roll-CMP system for the planarization of large-area electronics. In this paper, we present a statistical analysis on the linear roll-CMP process of copper-clad laminate (CCL) to determine the impacts of process parameters on the material removal rate (MRR) and its non-uniformity (NU). In the linear roll-CMP process, process parameters such as the slurry flow rate, roll speed, table feed rate, and down force affect the MRR and NU. To determine the polishing characteristics of roll-CMP, we use Taguchi's orthogonal array L16 (44) for the experimental design and F-values obtained by the analysis of variance (ANOVA). We investigate the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio to identify the prominent control parameters. The "higher is better" for the MRR and "lower is better" for the NU were selected for obtaining optimum CMP performance characteristics. The experimental and statistical results indicate that the down force and roll speed mainly affect the MRR and the down force and table feed rate determine the NU in the linear roll-CMP process. However, over 186.3 N of down force deteriorates the NU because of the bending of substrate. Roll speed has little relationship to the NU and the table feed rate does not impact on the MRR. This study provides information on the design parameter of roll-CMP machine and process optimization.
