DTV has a great advantage as compared to Analog TV in picture quality under low reception field strength. Various high quality tuners have been developed to result in much smaller Noise Figure of the receivers and many trials for receiving DTV signal through indoor antenna. In this paper, results of intensive field tests on the indoor reception of DTV are presented. Tests were carried out around Seoul-Gyeonggi Metropolitan area. Commercial directional and omni-directional antennas and 5th generation receiver were used for reception availability tests. The effects of heights, locations, and types of the house as well as the distance to the transmitter on the reception performances are analyzed. Our test results will be applied to improve the indoor reception environment of DTV.

In this paper, we describe the implementation and performance of a dual-mode Software Define Radio (SDR) smart antenna base station system. SDR technology enables a communication system to be reconfigured through software downloads to the flexible hardware platform that is implemented using programmable devices such as Digital Signal Processors (DSPs), Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), and microprocessors. The presented base station channel card comprises the physical layer (pHY) including the baseband modem as well as the beamforming module. This channel card is designed to support TDD High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) as well as Wireless Broadband Portable Internet (WiBro) utilizing the SDR technology. We first describe the operations and functions required in WiBro and TDD HSDPA. Then, we explain the channel card design procedure and hardware implementation. Finally, we evaluate WiBro and TDD HSDPA performance by simulation and actual channel-card-based processing. Our smart antenna base-station dual-mode channel card shows flexibility and tremendous performance gains in terms of communication capacity and cell coverage.

This paper analyzes the power allocation scheme to maximize the sum-rate for heterogeneous networks based on asynchronous time division duplex. We consider heterogeneous networks where a small cell exists in the macro cell coverage and the small cell and the macro cell share the same time-frequency resources. We formulate the optimization problem which maximizes the sum-rate of the heterogeneous network subject to the target signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. We analyze the feasible region in order for the optimal solution to exists and the optimal power allocation scheme for maximizing the sum-rate. Simulation results show that the proposed power allocation schemes outperform the maximum power transmission scheme.
Radio propagation in a high-speed railway is affected by ground reflective waves that are due to irregular reflection by the railway track, which consists of rails, sleepers, and gravel. This paper provides a train radio propagation model that simulates an irregular track reflective wave as a random variable. A simulation study using the train radio propagation model shows that the path loss exponent is around 3.0, indicating a reduced path loss compared to the value of 4.0 in the general mobile radio environment. Regressive analysis of the received signal strength indicators measured in the Gyeongbu high-speed railway showed the results identical to those of the simulation. These results confirm the train radio propagation model and can be applied to the coverage estimation and the design of a train radio network.
In this paper, we develop an intelligent mobile surveillance system based on binary CDMA for the unmanned automatic tracking and surveillance. That is, we implement a intelligent surveillance system using the binary CDMA wireless communication technology which is applied the merit of CDMA and TDMA on it complexly. This system is able to monitor the site of the accident on network in real time and process the various situations by implementing the security surveillance system. This system pursues an object by the 360-degree using camera, expands image using a PTZ(Pan/Tilt/Zoom) camera zooming function, identifies the mobile objects image within a screen and transfers the identified image to the remote site. Finally, we show the efficiency of the implemented system through the simulation of the controlled situations, such as tracking coverage on objects, object expansion, object detection number, monitoring the remote transferred image, number of frame per second by the image output signal etc..

An Interference Cancellation Wireless Repeater transmitts directly amplified the RF signal input to extend the coverage of the base station. Such a repeater inevitably suffers from the feedback interferences due to the environment and the adaptive Interference Cancelling System(ICS) is necessary. In this paper, the Variable Stepsize Complex Sign -Sign(VSCSS) LMS algorithm for ICS is presented. The algorithm can be implemented without multiplication/division arithmetic operation so that the required logic resources can be dramatically reduced in FPGA implementation. The performance of the proposed algorithm was analyzed in comparison with CSS-LMS algorithm and the learning curves obtained from simulation showed an excellent agreement with the theorical prediction. The simulation result with ICS in fading feedback channel environment showed the performance of the proposed algorithm is competible with NLMS algorithm.

Due to the advance of technology, the technology of various media is rapidly converged into digital technology. However, the conversion into digital radio is not achieved in korea yet. This paper is to suggest the best method of digital conversion of radio in korea by examining some conversion examples in foreign countries. In addition, the survey results on radio audience attitude is analysed by 2,000 audience samples in Korea based on the literature analysis. Radio is the unique media which have the strengths such as mobility, individuality, presence, broad coverage and instant. Most of all, radio cannot help keeping continuously the public broadcasting service in the future. So, the conversion into digital radio is crucial to sustain the competitiveness in digital media environment. This paper suggested that the digital conversion of radio broadcasting needs DRM transmission and should pursuit the policy which is distinguished between a AM and a standard FM, and between domestic broadcast and an international broadcast. Additionally, this paper proposed that we need to develop the multiple device for receiving of signal and the setting of standard technology.

The paper presents the preparations work and experiences gained from realtime GPS car monitoring during the European Rally Championships organized on 10-12 June 2005 in Poland. The developed system is based on GPS and GSM/GPRS technology. Distribution and teletransmission of data are possible using different GSM operators in Poland, which makes the system fully independent. The system's server collects data from rally cars, processing and send data through VPN connections to the SQL server located in main control room. Data can be collected in real time via Internet or GPRS. Some information on GSM/GPRS range during rally championships are also presented in the paper. The study covered many trials and tests of different software and various configurations of the GPRS modems before finally the system started to work. Information coming from 10 Rally Cars were collected to the SQL Server continuously in one second interval. In real time mode these all data were displayed simultaneously in the rally main control room and in the rally press conference room. Paper describes also adopted emergency procedures and remote reconfiguration of GPS/GPRS boxes inside rally cars made during championships. Some problems and method of practical solutions are presented to avoid active jamming dangerous for a driver and his pilot, having system of communication intercoms jammed by teletransmission of GPRS 900/1800 MHz. In cooperation with rally teams special GPS/GPRS safety boxes were designed and made. Monitoring of all 7 rally stages with GPS receivers and method of calibrations of the maps were presented. GSM signal coverage was also checked in all stages. All data transmitted from rally cars were recorded in the computer. Some of our GPS cars had accidents and dispite them information were continuously sent to server. There is possibility to show in post mission mode the position of chosen cars in our rally application. Some information of best rally cars are presented also in the paper.
Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have greatly contributed to the identification of common variants responsible for numerous complex traits. There are, however, unavoidable limitations in detecting causal and/or rare variants for traits in this approach, which depends on an LD-based tagging SNP microarray chip. In an effort to detect potential casual and/or rare variants for complex traits, such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and triglycerides (TGs), we conducted a targeted resequencing of loci identified by the Korea Association REsource (KARE) GWAS. The target regions for resequencing comprised whole exons, exon-intron boundaries, and regulatory regions of genes that appeared within 1 Mb of the GWA signal boundary. From 124 individuals selected in population-based cohorts, a total of 0.7 Mb target regions were captured by the NimbleGen sequence capture 385K array. Subsequent sequencing, carried out by the Roche 454 Genome Sequencer FLX, generated about 110,000 sequence reads per individual. Mapping of sequence reads to the human reference genome was performed using the SSAHA2 program. An average of 62.2% of total reads was mapped to targets with an average 22X-fold coverage. A total of 5,983 SNPs (average 846 SNPs per individual) were called and annotated by GATK software, with 96.5% accuracy that was estimated by comparison with Affymetrix 5.0 genotyped data in identical individuals. About 51% of total SNPs were singletons that can be considered possible rare variants in the population. Among SNPs that appeared in exons, which occupies about 20% of total SNPs, 304 nonsynonymous singletons were tested with Polyphen to predict the protein damage caused by mutation. In total, we were able to detect 9 and 6 potentially functional rare SNPs for T2D and triglycerides, respectively, evoking a further step of replication genotyping in independent populations to prove their bona fide relevance to traits.

Angiogenesis plays an essential role in embryo development, tissue repair, inflammatory diseases, and tumor growth. In the present study, we showed that endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) regulates retinal angiogenesis. Mice that lack eNOS showed growth retardation, and retinal vessel development was significantly delayed. In addition, the number of tip cells and filopodia length were significantly reduced in mice lacking eNOS. Retinal endothelial cell proliferation was significantly blocked in mice lacking eNOS, and EMG-2-induced endothelial cell sprouting was significantly reduced in aortic vessels isolated from eNOS-deficient mice. Finally, pericyte recruitment to endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cell coverage to blood vessels were attenuated in mice lacking eNOS. Taken together, we suggest that the endothelial cell function and blood vessel maturation are regulated by eNOS during retinal angiogenesis.
