Feeding Habits of the Blackthroat Seaperch Doederleinia berycoides in the Southern Sea of Korea (남해안에 출현하는 눈볼대 (Doederleinia berycoides)의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of the blackthroat seaperch Doederleinia berycoides were studied using 650 specimens collected in the Southern Sea of Korea, from January to December, 2005. The size (standard length, SL) of the specimens ranged from 6.3 to 35.2 cm. D. berycoides is a piscivore that consumes mainly teleosts such as Engraulis japonicus, Acropoma japonicum, and Myctophum nitidulum. Of the fish species Engraulis japonicus was the preferred prey. D. berycoides also eats small quantities of shrimps, amphipods, euphausiids, mysids, and crabs. D. berycoides showed ontogenetic changes in its feeding habits. Smaller individuals (5-10 cm SL) fed mainly on shrimp. The proportion of shrimp decreased with increasing fish size, and this decrease paralleled the increased consumption of fish. Fish accounted for almost all of the stomach contents of individuals larger than 15 cm SL. Cluster analysis based on the percentage dry weight (%DW) identified two size groups: group A (<15 cm SL) consumed primarily shrimp and fish; and group B (15< cm SL) preyed exclusively on fish. There was little seasonal change in the diet of D. berycoides, but shrimp constituted 41.8% of the summer diet in %W.

Feeding Habits of Tridentiger bifasciatus in the Tidal Creek at Sangnae-ri, Suncheon, Korea (순천 상내리 갯골에 출현하는 민물두줄망둑(Tridentiger bifasciatus)의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of Tridentiger bifasciatus were studied using 733 individuals collected in the tidal creek at Sangnae-ri, Suncheon, Korea, using a push net, monthly, from April 2011 to March 2012. The standard length (SL) of the specimens ranged from 1.5 to 8.2 cm. The stomach content analysis indicated that T. bifasciatus consumed mainly amphipods, such as Corophium sp., while copepods, polychaetes, and shrimps were other important prey species. In addition T. bifasciatus ate small quantities of crab larvae, fish, gastropod larvae, and insects. T. bifasciatus is a generalist that feeds on various zoobenthos, including fish. T. bifasciatus underwent an ontogenetic dietary shift. Smaller individuals (1-2 cm SL) fed mainly on amphipods. The proportion of amphipods decreased as body size increased, whereas the consumption of polychaetes increased gradually. The seasonal variation in the diet composition of T. bifasciatus was significant. Insects were common prey during summer, while the amounts of other prey, including polychaetes, were similar during spring, autumn, and winter.

  • The increase in the number of mud shrimps Upogebia major is a concern because of their negative effects on shellfish aquaculture, including Manila clam Venerupis philippinatum along the west coast of Korea. This study developed a behavioral analysis system for aquatic animals using a set of monochromatic light-emitting diode (LED) modules covering the visible light range at similar intervals. Movements of mud shrimp were monitored using a tracking system under illumination with infra-red light and an LED of 660 nm wavelength without provoking stimulation. The minimum light intensity needed to induce a photoresponse by the mud shrimp was $10{\mu}mole/m^2/s$ under the conditions tested. Of the six kinds of LED illuminations tested, the most sensitive response was obtained with illumination with the 505 nm LED, followed in order by LEDs with peak wavelengths of $525nm{\fallingdotseq}465nm$ > $405nm{\fallingdotseq}590nm$ > 660 nm. These findings should help to identify LED sources that efficiently induce movement of the mud shrimp and also for monitoring movement without stimulating.

Analysis of tail flip of the target prawn at the time of penetrating mesh in water flow by tank experiments

  • The tail flip of the decapod shrimp is a main feature in escaping behavior from the mesh of the codend in the trawl. The characteristics of tail flip in target prawn was observed and analyzed in a water tunnel in respect of flow condition and mesh penetration by a high speed video camera (500 fps). The tail bending angle or bending time in static water was significantly different than in flow water (0.7 m/s) and resultantly the angular velocity in static water was significantly higher than in flow water when carapace was fixed condition. When escaping through vertical traverse net panel in water flow the relative moving angle and relative passing angle to flow direction during tail flip, it significantly decreases the number of shrimps escaping than the case of blocking shrimp. The bending angles of tail flip between net blocking and passing through mesh were not significantly different while the bending time of shrimp passing through mesh was significantly longer than when shrimp blocking on the net. Accordingly the angular velocity of passing through mesh was significantly slower than blocking on the net although the angular velocity of the tail flip was not significantly related with carapace length. The main feature of tail flip for mesh penetration was considered as smaller diagonal direction as moving and passing angle in relation to net panel as right angle to flow direction rather than the angular velocity of tail flip.

A Survey on Safety of Dried Foods (건포류 식품의 안전실태 조사)

  • This survey was conducted to monitor the food additives, heavy metals, and microbial contamination of the dried marine products like squids, pollacks, and shrimps, including jerked beef. They were purchased from supermarkets and traditional markets in Gwangju from February to December 2009. A total of 101 samples were tested. Sorbic acid, one of the additives, was detected in 29 samples of them (32.2%) and the contents were from 21.4 to 244.2 mg/kg. Among heavy metals, lead was detected, ranging from 0.000 to 0.594 mg/kg and cadmium, from 0.000 to 0.679 mg/kg and mercury, from 0.001 to 0.947 mg/kg. Sodium was detected, ranging from 0.6 to 1.7%. Aerobic bacteria were detected from 81 samples (80.2%), coliform bacteria, from 10 samples (9.9%) and Bacillus cereus, causing food poisoning, was isolated from 3 samples (3.0%).

  • A bacterial strain SC-22 which produced alkaline lipase was isolated from salf-fermented shrimps. Strains SC-22 was identified as Staphylococcus xylosus. An alkaline lipase excreted by Staphylococcus xylosus SC-22 was purified by ammonium sulfate predipitation and column chromatography on Sephadex G-100 and DEAE-Sephace. The specific activity of purified lipase was 756U/mg of protein with 17.2% yield. The approximate molecular weight of the purified enzyme was 47 kDa. The partially purified lipase preparation had and optimum temperature of 4$0^{\circ}C$, an optimum pH of 8.0, and a stable of 5~10. Lipase activities were enhanced by salt ions such as $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$,N $a^{2+}$ while inhibited remarkably by heavy metal ions, C $u^{2+}$ and P $b^{2+}$.EX> 2+/.

  • This study was investigated traditional food utilization actual conditions of Gwangju and Chollanamdo.   • Demersal fishery resources were collected by an otter trawl in May, August and November 1996 at 9 stations off Youngkwang. And they were compared with the data obtained by a stow net, Of 73 species identified, assemblages were consisted of $63.0\%$ in fish, $14\%$ in shrimps, $14\%$ in crabs, $5\%$ in cephalopods and $3\%$ in gastropods. Johnius grypotus, Palaemon gravieri, Crangon hakodatei, Cynoglossus joyneri, Collichthys niveatus predominated in abundance, consisting of $64.4\%$ in the number of individuals. Catch by an otter trawl consisted mainly of demersal fishery resources, while catch by a stow net consisted mainly of pelagic fishery resources.

  • Genital organs and gonad development in kishi velvet shrimp (Metapenaeopsis dalei) were studied based on morphological and histological observations. The samples were collected monthly around the Ochongdo area on the western coast of Korea, from April 1997 to December 1998. Thelycum appear structurally complete after females reach a length of about 12.0 mm CL. Petasma rarely Join after males reach a length of 10.6 mm CL and a fully developed petasma shows up to a length of 12.0 mm CL. The ovaries lie on the dorsal side of the female shrimps thorax. The ovary cavity is located below the heart and above the hepatopancreas. The anterior part of the ovary is round and fused, and the posterior part shows a pair of tubule-like structures. Testes are bilaterally symmetrical, the anterior part shows a convoluted tubule, and the posterior part consists of a pair of tubules. In histological observations, ripe eggs and spermatozoon show when mature females and males reach a length of about 12.0 mm CL.

  • The diet composition of bullet mackerel, Auxis rochei was studied using 200 specimens collected from December 2013 to May 2014 in the coastal waters of Iloilo, Philippines. The size of A. rochei ranged from 11.1 to 31.2 cm in fork length (FL). A. rochei was epipelagic feeder that consumed mainly fishes. In addition, A. rochei consumed shrimps, copepods, crab larvae, amphipods and cephalopods. The diet also included small quantities of stomatopods, bivalves, and ostracods. Also, analysis of the prey-specific abundance against the frequency of occurrence shows that A. rochei have a narrow food niche, and are specialized feeder with fish as their dominant prey. Although fishes were the primary in food consumed by all size class. The fishes gradually increased with body size.
