  • This study was performed to investigate the contents of sulfites in 2, 770 dried marine products in Seoul Chung-Bu market from March to October in 1999. Sulfites of the samples were determined by Zn powder reduction method and Monnier-Williams's modified method. Eight samples of 2, 770 (0.29%) were detected over 30ppm in SO2 contents by Monnier-Williams's modified method. In samples detected over 30ppm, six dried filefishes(130.2~573.4ppm) were imported from Vietnam, same kind of other one(114.2ppm) was from China and the other one Alaska pollack(196.3ppm) was domestic. By Zn powder reduction method, 259 dried marine products (259/2, 770=9.35%) were positive reaction (1-30ppm). These were 93 dried shrimps, 53 filefish meats, 34 dried squids, 33 slices of dried pollacks and 17 sea mussel meats. So sulfites must be use commonly to prevent black spot and preserve for many dried shrimps, filefishes meats, dried squids etc. According to results, the quality test for the imported dried marine products must be reinforced to supply safety food for the citizens.

  • We examined shrimp and bycatch species composition in the shrimp beam trawl fishery off Wan-do, Korea(in the major or fishing ground)from December 2004 to November 2005. We observed a total of 103, 072 individuals in 96 taxa. By densities of individuals, 96.97% were shrimps, 1.20% decapods, 1.10% fish, 0.30% cephalopods and 0.43% other species. By catch weight, 57.29% were shrimps, 26.33% fish, 6.82% decapods, 4.64% cephalopods and 4.92% other species. In spring, the dominant bycatch species by biomass were Okamejei kenojei, Lophiomus setigerus, and Charybdis bimaculata. In summer, the dominant species were Charybdis bimaculata, Muraenesox cinereus, and Paralichlhys olivaceus. In autumn, dominants were Okamejei kenojei, Conger myriasler, and Sefipinna tenuifilis, and in winter they were Okamjei kenojei, Chaeturichthys stigmatias, and Sillago japonica. Bycatch species composition and individual species abundances differed significantly among seasons, probably indicating that variations were related to the life history characteristics of bycatch species. The diversity index was highest in October (2.797) and lowest in July (1.012). The July dominance index (0.569) was much higher than in other months; evenness was highest in September (0.856) and lowest in July (0.374). During the study period, the bycatch-to-shrimp ratio of this fishery varied from 0.063 in February 2005 to 11.031 in May 2005, with a mean of 3.363 These temporal variations may be linked 10 variations in reproductive behaviors and migration patterns of the marine animals sampled.

  • The mechanics of the walking shrimps is useful to clarify the fishing mechanisms in relation to the fishing gears. The gaiting behaviour concerning step positions and step timings on the flat board and the nettings, 16, 23 and 37mm in mesh size were experimented in the aquarium using video camera from June to October, 1984. It was found that the irregular movements of walking legs in step positions and step patterns were appeared on the nettings more than the flat surface due to the absence of mechanical contact with the substrates. The mean stride length and coefficient of variation of the periods in the walking shrimps on the flat board were significantly different from those values on the nettings, However, the velocity, the period and the ratio of forestroke to backstroke were unsteadily changed with the carapace length, and showed little difference under the four conditions. The mean phase difference on the flat board was greater than those values on the nettings which were decreased, while standard deviation on the flat board was smaller than those values on the nettings which were increased with increasing in mesh size.

  • Plants from the genus Centaurea (C.) (Family: Asteraceae alt. Compositae), widely distributed in Asia, Europe and North America, have traditionally been used in the treatment of various ailments. As a part of our on-going studies on the plants from the genus C. for their phytochemistry and biological activities, extracts of the seeds of Turkish endemic C. species, C. bornmuelleri and C. huber-morathii, were tested for their cytotoxicity towards the CaCo2 colon cancer cell line as well as for the toxicity towards the brine shrimps, using the MTT and the brine shrimp lethality assays, respectively. Among the extracts, the MeOH extract of these plants showed significant toxicity towards the brine shrimps ($LD_{50}=55.2{\times}10^{-2}\;and\;42.4{\times}10^{-2}mg/ml$, respectively). The MeOH extract of both C. species also inhibited the growth of CaCo2 colon cancer cells in the MTT assay ($IC_{50}$=29.9 and 33.0 g/ml, respectively). As the most prominent activities in both assays were observed with the MeOH extracts, it can be assumed that the compound(s) responsible for these activities are polar in nature.

  • Species composition and seasonal variation of a shrimp assemblage in the coastal waters of Kori, Korea were studied based on the monthly trawled samples through a year of 1996. In the study period, 11 species of shrimps from 6 families were collected. Of these Crangon affinis predominated throughout the year. The peak abundances occurred in June and November, and low ones in winter and early autumn. More species were collected in winter and spring than summer and autumn. Species diversity indices showed that the shrimp assemblage was more diverse in winter than spring and autumn. Predominance of C. affinis in June, July and November caused high abundances and low diversity indices. The shrimps in the study area can be grouped into two groups on the basis of their occurrence patterns: resident species and seasonal species.
