This study was carried out to evaluate neutralization effects against WSSV using antiserum produced from recombinant envelop protein, rVP466 of WSSV. The VP466 gene of WSSV was cloned into pCold I expression vector and rVP466 was expressed in E. coli RIPL. The antiserum against rVP466 was produced in white rabbits (New Zealand white rabbit). The specific immunoreactivity to the antigen, rVP466, was confirmed by Western blot. The constant amounts of WSSV at $1{\times}10^4$ diluted stocks were mixed with various antiserum concentrations and then injected to the muscle of shrimp, Penaeus chinensis, for the neutralization challenge. The shrimps challenged with WSSV as a positive control and those with the mixture of WSSV and preimmune serum as a preimmune control showed 100% cumulative mortality at 17 days post challenge and 83% at 25 days post challenge, respectively. The shrimps challenged with 3 different mixtures of WSSV and rVP466 antiserum at ratios of 1:0.01, 1:0.1 and 1:1 showed 73%, 53% and 46% cumulative mortalities at 25 days post challenge, respectively. These results indicated that WSSV could be neutralized by the rVP466 antiserum. These results suggest that envelop protein VP466 is involved in the initial step of WSSV infection in shrimp.

This study focused on the physiological change of the shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei postlarvae 15 stages, under different acclimation methods up to the endpoint of 4 practical salinity unit (psu). Besides using sea water as the control, two acclimation methods, fast acclimation (50% salinity reduction every 8 hours) and slow acclimation (50% salinity reduction every day), were adapted. Results show that the survival rate, glucose and blood uric nitrogen of each group were not significantly different. However, the ion profile differed according to the acclimation methods. Magnesium and sodium of shrimps acclimated to low salinity in both the methods, showed lower concentration than shrimps at 32 psu sea water. Especially, $Na^+$ concentration, which directly influences the osmolality of shrimp, decreased sharply in the fast acclimated group during the first eight hours (from 32 psu to 16 psu). To reduce acclimation stress, it is recommended to take more than eight hours during the first step for reducing the salinity.
In the search for novel potent fungi-derived bioactive compounds for bioinsecticide applications, crude ethyl acetate culture filtrate extracts from 110 mangrove fungal endophytes were screened for their toxicity. Toxicity tests of all extracts against brine shrimp (Artemia salina) larvae were performed. The extracts with the highest toxicity were further examined for insecticidal activity against Spodoptera litura larvae and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition activity. The results showed that the extracts of five isolates exhibited the highest toxicity to brine shrimp at 50% lethal concentration ($LC_{50}$) values of 7.45 to 10.24 ppm. These five fungal isolates that obtained from Rhizophora mucronata were identified based on sequence data analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA as Aspergillus oryzae (strain BPPTCC 6036), Emericella nidulans (strains BPPTCC 6035 and BPPTCC 6038), A. tamarii (strain BPPTCC 6037), and A. versicolor (strain BPPTCC 6039). The mean percentage of S. litura larval mortality following topical application of the five extracts ranged from 16.7% to 43.3%. In the AChE inhibition assay, the inhibition rates of the five extracts ranged from 40.7% to 48.9%, while eserine (positive control) had an inhibition rate of 96.8%, at a concentration of 100 ppm. The extracts used were crude extracts, so their potential as sources of AChE inhibition compounds makes them likely candidates as neurotoxins. The high-performance liquid chromatography profiles of the five extracts differed, indicating variations in their chemical constituents. This study highlights the potential of culture filtrate ethyl acetate extracts of mangrove fungal endophytes as a source of new potential bioactive compounds for bioinsecticide applications.

The interactions of microbiota in the gut play an important role in promoting or maintaining the health of hosts. In this study, in order to investigate and compare the effects of dietary supplementation with Lactobacillus pentosus HC-2 (HC-2), Enterococcus faecium NRW-2, or the bacteria-free supernatant of a HC-2 culture on the bacterial composition of Litopenaeus vannamei, Illumina sequencing of the V1-V2 region of the 16S rRNA gene was used. The results showed that unique species exclusively existed in specific dietary groups, and the abundance of Actinobacteria was significantly increased in the intestinal bacterial community of shrimp fed with the bacteria-free supernatant of an HC-2 culture compared with the control. In addition, the histology of intestines of the shrimp from the four dietary groups was also described, but no obvious improvements in the intestinal histology were observed. The findings in this work will help to promote the understanding of the roles of intestinal bacteria in shrimps when fed with probiotics or probiotic supernatant.
Vitellogenin (Vg) is the precursor of vitellin (Vn), which is the major yolk protein in nearly all oviparous species, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, and most invertebrates. It is one of the most important factors during reproduction, and numerous studies have shown that Vg genes are markers of the reproductive cycle and effecter genes induced by endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Previously, we isolated two distinct cDNAs encoding vitellogenin homologs Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 from Pandalus shrimp Pandalopsis japonica. In this study, full-length genomic sequences of Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 were determined using a PCR-based genome walking strategy. Isolated Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 genes were 11,910 and 11,850 bp long, respectively. Both Pj-Vg genes had 15 exons and 14 introns, and the splicing sites were also the same, suggesting that they arose via gene duplication. The similar structural characteristics of decapod Vg genes suggest that they are all orthologs that evolved from the same ancestral gene. Analysis of Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 expression revealed that the relative copy numbers of Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 were similar in the hepatopancreas, whereas Pj-Vg2 transcripts were also detected in the ovary. Expression of both Pj-Vg genes was induced in hepatopancreas of mature individuals, whereas only Pj-Vg2 transcripts were upregulated in the ovaries from mature animals, suggesting that both Pj-Vgs are important for oocyte development. A strong positive correlation was found between Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 transcripts in the same individual, indicating they are under the same control mechanisms. Additionally, a positive correlation was found between ovarian and hepatopancreatic Pj-Vg2 transcripts, suggesting that its dual expression is regulated by similar physiological conditions. Knowledge of the similarities and differences between the two vitellogenin-like genes, Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2, would help us to understand their roles in reproduction and other physiological effects.

We made the Toha-jeot added cabbage kimchi with Toha-jeot, which is salt-fermented Toha shrimp in Korean traditional fermented food. The physicochemical characteristics of cabbage kimchi for 5 week fermentation at 4$^{\circ}C$ were observed. The salt content was 2.10~1.50% during the fermentation period. The salt content decreased rapidly during the first week, stayed the same level until the 4 week and then decreased after the 4 week. The pH of control kimchi and Toha-jeot added cabbage kimchi were 5.69, 5,64, respectively on preparation day. The rate of decrease of pH of Toha-jeot added cabbage kimchi was slow as the fermentation processed. The total acidity of the two kinds of kimchi was increased. The total acidity was higher from Toha-jeot added cabbage kimchi than control cabbage kimchi at the later stage of fermentation. The contents of total sugar and reducing sugar were higher from Toha-jeot added cabbage kimchi than control cabbage kimchi at the early stage of fermentation. The total sugar and reducing sugar contents of the two kinds of cabbage kimchi were decreased gradually as the fermentation processed. The ascorbic acid contents of the two kinds of kimchi were decreased slightly at the early stage of fermentation and then increased from 2 to 4 week, while there was no further change at 5 week.
The present experiment was conducted to study the effects of partial replacement of spray-dried porcine protein (SDPP) or fish meal with soybean and shrimp protein hydrolysate (SSPH) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and serum biochemical parameters in weaned pigs. Two hundred and forty 21${\pm}$2 d old pigs ((Pietrain${\times}$Duroc)${\times}$(Landrace${\times}$Large Yorkshire)) with initial weight of 6.9${\pm}$0.5 kg were randomly allocated to five dietary treatments with six replicates per treatment and eight piglets per replicate. The control diet (T1) contained 2% SDPP and 6% fishmeal, and SDPP for experimental diets T2 and T3 was replaced with 1% and 2% SSPH, respectively, on an iso-nitrogenous basis. The fishmeal for experimental diets T4 and T5 was replaced with 1% and 2% SSPH, respectively, also on an iso-nitrogenous basis. The experimental period was 21 days. The results showed that weaned piglets fed the diets containing 1% and 2% SSPH as a replacement for SDPP had similar average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), feed/gain (F/G), diarrhea rate and serum biochemical indices e.g. blood urea nitrogen (BUN), total serum protein (TP), albumin to globulin ratio (A/G), globulin (GLO), serum glucose (GLU), and immunoglobulin G (IgG) to those fed the control diet during 0-10 d and 0-21 d of the experiment. The substitution of 1% SSPH on an iso-nitrogenous basis for fish meal appeared to be beneficial for ADG (p = 0.59) and ADFI (p = 0.23) of piglets during the overall period. The digestibility of calcium was higher (p<0.01) in pigs fed diets containing SSPH than on the control diet. Addition of 1% SSPH on an iso-nitrogenous basis for fish meal could increase the digestibilities of dry matter and energy of the diet. Dietary replacement of fish meal with 1% and 2% SSPH had no effect on the concentrations of BUN, TP, A/G, GLO, GLU, and IgG. In conclusion, dietary SDPP or fish meal could partially replace SSPH without any adverse effect on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and serum biochemical parameters in weaned piglets.
This study was undertaken to investigate the physicochemical properties of chitosans produced from chitins which were prepared from shrimp shell under the 4 different conditions(HCl concentration : 1 N, 4 N and reaction temperature $0^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C$). The effects of chitosan on the properties of Kakdugi during storage also were examined. Viscosity of chitosan was markedly different$(313.1{\sim}98.8\;cps)$ depending on the production conditon. Chitosan solution showed pseudoplastic property. The infrared(IR) spectrums of chitosans prepared under the conditions of this study were very simillar, and the degree of deacetylation of chitosan was relatively high$(92{\sim}96%)$ independent of the extraction conditions of chitin. As the storage period was extended, markedly lower pH and higher titratable acidity were resulted in all the groups. Throughout the storage period, pH and titratable acidity of kakdugies with chitosan were higher and lower, respectively than those of control. Viscosity of kakdugi juice was significantly different among the groups and as the storage period increased, the juice viscosity decreased. At the eighth day of storage, the juice of control group was more viscous than those of kakdugies containing chitosan. Throughout the storage period the numbers of total microorganisms and of microorgarnisms of Leuconostoc genus in control kakdugi tended to be higher and lower, respectively than those in kakdugies containing chitosan. The growth of Lac. plantarum was slightly lower in kakdugi containing chitosan C produced at low HCl concentration and high temperature compared to the others.

The practical monitoring was performed to survey the mortalities in aquaculture farms of olive flounder, rockfish, rainbow trout, Japanese eel, white shrimp and abalone in South Korea from May to November, 2011. The aquatic organism disease inspectors, who have the national licenses for the diagnosis and prevention of aquatic disease and have close relationship with the farms, investigated the rates and causes of mortalities according to the standard manual. In 70 flounder farms, the cumulative mortalities rate was 27.9%, and the mortalities were caused by scuticociliatosis, streptococcosis, VHS, non-infectious loss, vibriosis and gliding bacterial disease. The moralities rate of 30 rockfish farms was 13.6%, and those were mainly contributed by gill flukes and streptococcosis. Most of mortalities of rainbow trout were caused by non-infectious loss and protozoan white spot disease. The mortalities rate of Japanese eel was 0.6% by edwardsiellosis, protozoan white spot disease and gill flukes. The loss rate of white shrimp was 71.2%, and most of them was related with non-infectious ones, such as carnivalization, transportation loss, and the rest was caused by viral white spot disease. The mortalities rate in the abalone farms was 10.7% and all of them were related with non-infectious loss.

N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is formed through reactions between dimethylamine (DMA) and nitrite. Jeotgal, a traditional Korean salted and fermented seafood, contains a large amount of DMA and is an ingredient of kimchi condiment. This study investigated the effects of amount and type of Jeotgal on changes in NDMA and its precursor contents during storage of kimchi. NDMA was found in all 23 Jeotgal samples, and DMA in nine salted and fermented shrimp samples showed levels ranging from 16.5 to 58.9 mg/kg (average of 30.9 mg/kg). The seven salted and fermented anchovy juice samples showed DMA levels ranging from 21.7 to 44.4 mg/kg (average of 34.5 mg/kg). Kimchi was assigned to one of the following five groups: kimchi without salted and fermented anchovy juice and salted and fermented shrimp (control), kimchi with small amount of salted and fermented anchovy juice (AK1), kimchi with large amount of salted and fermented anchovy juice (AK2), kimchi with small amount of salted and fermented shrimp (SK1), and kimchi with large amount of salted and fermented shrimp (SK2). SK2 had higher DMA content than SK1 during storage while AK2 had higher DMA content than AK1 after storage for 10 days. Nitrite contents of AK1 and SK1 were higher than those of AK2 and SK2 after storage for 20 days. NDMA content was significantly higher in SK2 than in SK1 after storage for 0 and 10 days, and NDMA content in AK2 was significantly higher compared to that in AK1 after storage for 0 days. The DMA and NDMA contents decreased in all kimchi samples during storage. The effects of amount and type of Jeotgal on DMA and NDMA contents were reduced after storage for 20 days. The results suggest that the content and type of Jeotgal have significant effects on formation of NDMA in kimchi.
