Considering the mechanical cracking in the concrete lining of tunnels occurring in relatively short period of time after the construction, there is a need for the study on the mechanical behavior and the cracking characteristics of double lining support system(shotcrete and concrete lining). For the proposed study, downscaled lining models of Kyung-Bu High Speed Railway tunnels were tested. Most longitudinal cracks at about 93 percentage developed within 30 arch degree from the vault. Cracking load was about 30 percentage of the failure load and the deflection under the cracking load was 10 percentage of the deflection under the failure load. The overbreak around the vault contributed to the reduction of the capacity for cracking and failure by the percentage greater than the reduced effective depth. Of several rock block types considered in this research, the triangular block was the most critical, and the right triangular block under eccentric load was secondly critical for the stability of the tunnel lining system. The dimensionless support reaction curves were derived from the experimental results for single and double lining. The general equation to compute the designed flexural moment was modified.

From the early 1980's, the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) has been developed as one of the standard tunnelling methods in Korea. Approximately 10 years ago, wet-mix shotcrete with sodium silicate (waterglass) accelerator was introduced and widely used to tunnel lining and underground support. However, this accelerator had some disadvantages due to the decrease of long-term strength compared to plain concrete (without accelerator) and low quality of the hardened shotcrete. In order to compensate for these disadvantages, recently developed alkali-free accelerator has been successfully demonstrated in numerous projects and applications as a new material to make tunnels more durable and safer. An experimental investigation was carried out in order to verify the strength behavior of wet-mix Steel Fiber Reinforced Shotcrete (SFRS) with alkali-free accelerator. Compressive strength, flexural strength, and flexural toughness were measured by testing specimens extracted from the shotcrete panels. From the results, wet-mix SFRS with alkali-free accelerator exhibited excellent strength improvement compared to the conventional shotcrete accelerator.
This paper presents an experimental study on a new potential geothermal energy source obtained from tunnel structures. An "energy textile", which is a textile-type ground heat exchanger, was fabricated between a shotcrete layer and a guided drainage geotextile in the tunnel lining system. To examine the long-term thermal behavior of the energy textile, the difference in temperatures of the inlet and outlet fluid circulating through the heat exchange pipe within the energy textile was monitored using a constant-temperature water bath. Daily heat exchange rate of the energy textile during cooling operation was estimated from the measured temperatures of the inlet and outlet fluid through the energy textile. The air and ground temperature was also continuously monitored. The operation of the energy textile as a ground heat exchanger was simulated using a 3D numerical CFD model (Fluent). The thermal conductivity of shotcrete and concrete lining components and temperature variation of air in the tunnel were incorporated in the model. The numerical analysis shows a good agreement with the long-term monitoring result.
It is the common practice to over design the reinforcement for the secondary tunnel lining due to the lack of rational insight into the ground loosening loads. and due to the conservative application of the empirical design methods. The main loads of the secondary lining are the ground Loosening loads and the ground water pressure, and the ground load is critical in the reinforcement design of the secondary lining in the case of drained tunnel. If the external load is absent around a tunnel, the reasons of the load far secondary tunnel lining are the deterioration of the primary supports such as shotcrete, steel rib, and rockbolts. Accordingly, the analysis method considering the ground-primary supports-secondary lining interaction should be required tar the rational design of the secondary tunnel lining. In this paper, the interaction was conceptually described by the simple mass-spring model and the load transfer from the ground and primary supports to the secondary lining is showed by the ground-primary supports-secondary lining reaction curves fur the theoretical solution of a circular tunnel. And also, the application of this proposed model to numerical analysis is verified in order to check the potential far the tunnel with the complex analysis conditions.

A new geothermal energy source obtained from a tunnel structure has been studied in this paper. The geothermal energy is extracted through a textile-type ground heat exchanger named "Energy Textile" that is installed between a shotcrete layer and a guided drainage geotexitle. A test bed was constructed in an abandoned railway tunnel to verify the geothermal heat exchanger system performed by the energy textile. To evaluate the applicability of the energy textile, we measured the thermal conductivity of shotcrete and lining samples which were prepared in accordance with a common mixture design. An overall performance of the energy textile installed in the test bed was evaluated by carrying out a series of in-situ thermal response test. In addition, a 3-D finite volume analysis (FLUENT) was adopted to simulate the operation of the ground heat exchanger being encased in the energy textile with the consideration of the effect of the shotcrete and lining thermal conductivity.

In tennelling lattice girders have basically the same function as steel arch supports. They serve as elements of temporary lining and in some cases also as part of the permanent lining. Also lattice girders are closely connected with that of the shotcreting lining technique. This paper presents the results of modelling test for analysing shorcrete rebound, shotcreting time and finding void spaces using the aretificial tunnel wall which consist of wood to evaluate the site applicability of lattice girders for tunnel support. Test results indicate that in case of using lattice girders as a tunnel support material, shotcrete rebound, shotcreting time and occurrence of void spaces are relatively reduced comparing to H-beam steel rib. And we can get some informations ths lattice girder has various advantages when we use it as one of tunnel support materials.
This paper deals with the application of joint element in the finite element modeling of discontinuities encountered during rock tunneling. A nodal displacement joint element was implemented in a two dimensional finite element program GEOFE2D. The applicability of the joint element for modeling of discontinuities and the numerical stability of the implemented algorithm were examined by comparing the results of reduced small scale model tests as well as commercially available FEM program. The GEOFE2D was then used to analyze a tunnel crossed by a major discontinuity for the purpose of understanding the effect of discontinuity on the tunnel behavior. In addition, a modeling technique for the junction of discontinuity and shotcrete lining was presented. The results of analysis indicated that the stress-strain field around the tunnel is significantly altered by the presence of discontinuity, and that the stresses in the shotcrete lining considerably increase at the junction of the shotcrete lining and the discontinuity. It is therefore concluded that the major discontinuities must be carefully modeled in the finite element analysis of a tunneling problem in order to obtain more reliable results close to actual tunnel behavior.

This paper presents the effect of tunneling and groundwater interaction on tunnel behavior. As part of this study, design issuses for tunneling situations similar to that considered in this study are first identified. A parametric study is then conducted on tunneling situations frequently encountered in Seoul area using a 3D stress-pore presure coupled finite-element model with emphasis on the effects of ground and lining permeabilities. The results indicate that tunneling in water bearing ground results in a deeper and wider settlement trough, increased axial thrusts in shotcrete lining than those without the groundwater. Also revealed is that the axial thrusts in shotcrete lining are governed by the relative permeability between the ground and the lining. Design implications of the findings from this study are discussed.
The concrete lining of a tunnel constructed by NATM used to be regarded as facing material which does not support any load from the surrounding ground. But the recent appraisal of the decrepit tunnels revealed that rockbolts and shotcrete deteriorate with time resulting in loss of supporting capability. Consequently, concrete lining has to support part of the load which used to be supported by rockbolts and shotcrete, and thus should be regarded as the final supporting structure in a tunnel. One of the common, and perhaps the most serious problem in concrete lining is the longitudinal cracks taking place at the tunnel crown. The longitudinal cracks, mostly related to the construction procedures, can be developed by many reasons such as the lack of thickness, wrong materials, bad curing environment, and excessive external forces. Many efforts has been made to control and suppress these cracks but efficient and economic way is yet to be found. For efficient crack control in concrete lining, reinforcement by composite fibers, which is the mixture of steel fiber and nylon fiber, is suggested in this study.
Generally the NATM technique uses shotcrete, rock bolts, H-beam steel ribs, and concrete lining for the tunnel support in Korea. Among them, H-beam steel ribs are extremely heavy and difficult for workers to handle. Therefore, especially in Europe, lattice girders are being used instead of H-beam steel ribs for tunnel support. Lattice girders have basically the same function as H-beam steel ribs in tunnelling. The main advantages of using lattice girders compared to H-beam steel rib supports are as follows: 1) lattice girders have relatively a low weight enough to be easily lifted and installed by labors and 2) they create a more effective bond with the shotcrete. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of lattice girders compared to H-beam steel ribs used in construction tunnel sites and to show that lattice girders can be adequately applied in domestic tunnel construction sites as a new tunnel support system.
