An Experimental Study of the Fuel Additive to Improve the Performance of a 2-Stroke Large Diesel Engine (2행정 대형 디젤엔진의 성능향상을 위한 연료첨가제의 실험적 연구)

  • In an effort to reduce the onset of global warming, the International Maritime Organization Marine Environment Protection Committee (IMO MEPC) proposed the reduction in ship speeds as a way of lowering the proportion of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in the Green House Gas emissions from ships. To minimize fuel costs, shipping companies have already been performing slow steaming for their own fleets. Specifically, the slow steaming approach has been adopted for most ocean-going container lines. In addition, because of the increased marine fuel cost that is required to enable increased capacity, there is an urgent need for more advanced fuel-saving technologies. Therefore, in this present study, we propose a fuel-cost reduction method that can improve the performance of diesel engines. We introduce a predetermined amount (0.025% of the amount of fuel used) of fuel additive (oil-soluble calcium-based organometallic compound). For improved experimental accuracy, as the test subjects, we utilize a large two-stroke diesel engine installed in land plants. The loads of the test engine were classified as low, medium, and high (50, 75, and 100%, respectively). We compare the engine performance parameters (power output, fuel consumption rate, p-max, and exhaust temperature) before and after the addition of fuel additives. Our experimental results, confirmed that we can realize fuel-cost savings of at least 2% by adding the fuel additive in low load conditions (50%). Likewise, the maximum combustion pressure was found to have increased. On the other hand, we observed that there was a reduction in the exhaust temperature.

A Study on the Safe Transportation of a Non-Standardized Cargo (Steel Box) for General Cargo Ships (일반화물선에서 비표준화물(철재상자)의 안전한 운송을 위한 고찰)

  • The "Standard on Cargo Stowage and Securing" implemented to safely stow and secure the cargo of international shipping vessels and domestic car ferries, has also been applied to general cargo ships transported between domestic ports since J anuary 2018. As a result, a new type of cargo, such as a non-standardized steel box transported by general cargo ships to major ports in Korea from Jeju Island in Korea, must be factored as the method of safe stowage and securing according to the legal classification of cargo. This study analyzed the legal status of a steel box by analyzing the actual size, shape of steel box through field verification, collection of data from relevant agencies and finally proposed the methods of safe stowage and securing for a steel box in the cargo holds of general cargo ships. According to the relevant domestic laws and international regulations, steel boxes could be classified as pallette boxes with protective outer packing, a type of non-standardized cargo. Additionally, when a steel box is loaded into the cargo hold of general cargo ships, a method of loading and transporting them must be factored so that there is no gap in the cargo hold of ships. Verification of the safety of the tightly loading and transportation measures in the reviewed cargo hold was verified through safety of the hull structure and securing of the ship's stability. As a result of verification of the safety of the hull structure, the value of the structural strength on both sides and the floor of the cargo hold for the total weight of cargo that can be loaded in the cargo hold was satisfied, and the value of the ship's stability was satisfied with the value of GoM and the restoration of the three cross-sectional stability curve areas.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify evaluation factors and analyze the relative importance among factors to select a suitable transportation method for transferring the increasing amount of transshipment at multiple terminals at the Busan new port. To accomplish this, the evaluation factors were selected through a literature survey and brainstorming of a group of experts associated with the port operation, and were classified into five major factors and 15 middle factors. The evaluation factors classified hierarchically were surveyed relative to workers in organizations such as shipping companies, port corporations, container terminals, and related ministries. The importance of each factor was calculated using the hierarchical analysis process (AHP). As a result of the importance analysis, priority was assigned in order of safety, productivity, investment efficiency, operational efficiency, and policy conformity. Through this, it was necessary to select a suitable transportation method for the transshipment cargo in terminals while focusing on the cargo and terminal security and preventing accidents. As a result of calculating from six ITT transportation candidates, the priority was determined in order of monorail, Autocon, and so on as ITT transportation suitable for the Busan new port..

Analysis of Postharvest 1-MCP Treatment and CA Storage Effects on Quality Changes of 'Fuji' Apples during Export Simulation (모의 수출 '후지' 사과의 품질에 미치는 수확후 1-MCP 처리 및 CA저장 효과)

  • Effects of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment and controlled atmosphere (CA) storage was analyzed for the export quality of 'Fuji' apples after 8-month storage. Apples were harvested from two orchards located in different regions at relatively late stage of maturity for long-term storage. Fruit were treated with 1 ${\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 1-MCP and then stored in $0^{\circ}C$ air or CA with 1.5 kPa $O_2$ and < 1.0 kPa $CO_2$ for 8 months. To simulate poststorage export process such as 2-week refrigerated container shipment plus 7-day local distribution, fruit were put in $0^{\circ}C$ air storage for additional two weeks and then on the shelf for 7 days at $20^{\circ}C$. Both the 1-MCP treatment and CA storage reduced respiration and ethylene evolution after storage and shipping simulation, and successfully maintained titratable acidity and flesh firmness even after the export process. In 'Fuji' apples harvested after adequate stage of maturity for long-term storage, however, 1-MCP treatment alone seemed not to be satisfactory for the maintenance of sensorial fruit texture for export market. CA storage or 1-MCP treatment/CA storage combination program should be applied for lately harvested 'Fuji' apples exported after eight months storage.

On the Evaluation of Physical Distribution Service in Ports (항만물류서비스의 평가에 관하여)

  • It is required to consider pricing and non-pricing factors and external economy in order to achieve the objects of physical distribution system in a port. Recently, among the three factors, much attention has been paid to non-pricing factor in the system. Although physical distribution service in a port(PDSP)has been frequently mentioned in documents and literature related to port and shipping studies, few study on it has not been systematically and scientifically made due to the following problems; $\circ$ there are not proper criteria to evaluate level and quality of PDSP and as a result it is difficult to set up a unified standard for doing so. $\circ$ algorithms to evaluate problems with complex and ambiguous attributes and multiple levels in PDSP are not available. This thesis aims to establish a paradigm to evaluate PDSP and to abvance existing decision making methods to deal with complex and ambiguous problems in PDSP. To tackle the first purpose, extensive and thorough literature survey was carried out on general physical distribution service, which is a corner stone to handle PDSp. In addition, through interviews and questionnaire to the expert, it have extracted 82 factors of physical distribution service in a port. They have been classified into 6 groups by KJ method and each group defined by the expert's advice as follows; a. Potentiality b. Exactness c. safety d. Speediness e. Convenience f. Linkage Prior to the service evaluation, many kinds of its attributes must be identified on the basis of rational decision owing to complexity and ambiguity inherent in PDSP. An analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is a method to evaluate them but it is not applicable to PDSP that have property of non-additivity and overlapped attributes. Therefore, probablility measure can not be used to evaluate PDSP but fuzzy measure is required. Hierarchical fuzzy integral method, which is merged AHP with fuzzy measure, is also not effective method to evaluate attributes because it has vary complicated way to calculate fuzzy measure identification coefficient of attributes. A new evaluation algorithm has been introduced to solve problems with multi-attribute and multi-level hierarchy, which is called hierarchy fuzzy process(HFP).Analysis on ambiguous aspects of PDSP under study which is not easy to be defined is prerequisite to evaluate it. HFP is different from algorithm existed in that it clarified the relationship between fuzzy measure and probability measure adopted in AHP and that it directly calculates the family of fuzzy measure from overlapping coefficient and probability measure to treat and evaluate ambiguous and complex aspects of PDSP. A new evaluation algorithm HFP was applied to evaluate level of physical distribution service in the biggest twenty container port in the world. The ranks of the ports are as follows; 1. A Feasibility Study on Rail-Ferry Systems: Focused on Sino-Korea Transport Routes (한.중간 열차페리운행에 관한 연구 - 수도권항만을 중심으로 -)

  • A rapid growth of interregional trade between China and Korea requires new development and expansion of ports. Currently, there is no rail-ferry system between China and Korea, however, a rapid growth of car-ferry industry shows possibilities. Several candidate cities and regions in East part of China and West part of Korea are selected. We identified times in clearance and station-to-station services as major benefits. We compared three transport modes including candidate cities and regions: container ships, car-ferry and rail-ferry. We used AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) as an evaluation method to select most competitive rail-ferry routes between two countries. We also used 7-point Likert scales to find out bottlenecks and factors to introduce rail-ferry services as other questionnaires. As a result, Rail Ferry System(RFS) is a little expensive due to wagon loading efficiency in cargo hold of the ship compared to Car Ferry System or Liner Shipping System. But RFS is recommendable in case of Block Train transport between Korea and EU area by may of TCR and TSR comparing Car Ferry System, because it can reduce total transport cost and connecting procedure at border lines of passing countries.

Effect of Non-Perforated Breathable Films on the Quality and Shelf Life of Paprika during MA Storage in Simulated Long Distance Export Condition (비천공 Breathable필름이 장거리 모의 수출 조건에서 파프리카의 MA 저장중 품질과 저장수명에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of this study was investigated long distance export condition of paprika from Korea to Canada, and evaluated the effect of non-perforated breathable films on the storability of paprika during MA storage in the simulated long distance export condition. The long distance export condition of paprika from Korea to Canada was $7{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and RH 90% during shipping for 20 days, and then the temperature of that was increased to $13^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours during transferring from refrigerated container to storage room in Canada, and decreased $3{\sim}4^{\circ}C$ for 3 days before distributing to local markets. The temperature and relative humidity of local markets was $16^{\circ}C$ and 60%, respectively. The packing material treatments were non-packing, as control, perforated film (6 mm diameter hole, $18holes/m^2$), and 3 kind of laser treated non-perforated films (oxygen transmission rate was 5,000, 20,000 and 100,000 $cc/m^2{\cdot}day{\cdot}atm$). Under the simulated long distance export condition; $7^{\circ}C$ and RH 90% for 15 days and then $20^{\circ}C$ and RH 55% for 7 days, the fresh weight loss of paprika was less than 1% in 3 kind of laser treated non-perforated film treatments but was more than 4% in control and perforated film treatment that showed severe deterioration of visual quality after 20 days of storage. The atmosphere of paprika packages was changed 5% oxygen and 15% carbon dioxide in 5,000 $cc/m^2{\cdot}day{\cdot}atm$ treatment, and 16% oxygen and 4~5% carbon dioxide in 20,000 $cc/m^2{\cdot}day{\cdot}atm$ treatment during room temperature storage after cold storage for 15 days. A carbon dioxide concentration of these 2 treatments was exceeded the optimal MA and CA condition. There was no significant difference in ethylene concentration among 3 kind of laser treated non-perforated film treatments. A paprika packed with 100,000 $cc/m^2{\cdot}day{\cdot}atm$ non-perforated film showed the highest visual quality under the simulated long distance export condition. However, the firmness and soluble solids did not show any significant difference among 3 kind of laser treated non-perforated film treatments. Therefore, we may suggest that 100,000 $cc/m^2{\cdot}day{\cdot}atm$ laser treated non-perforated film was the proper film for MAP of paprika under long distance export condition that was $7{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and RH 90% for 15 days, and then $20^{\circ}C$ and RH 55% for 7 days.

A Brief Empirical Verification Using Multiple Regression Analysis on the Measurement Results of Seaport Efficiency of AHP/DEA-AR (다중회귀분석을 이용한 AHP/DEA-AR 항만효율성 측정결과의 실증적 검증소고)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the empirical results of Analytic Hierarchy Process/Data Envelopment Analysis-Assurance Region(AHP/DEA-AR) by using multiple regression analysis during the period of 2009-2012 with 5 inputs (number of gantry cranes, number of berth, berth length, terminal yard, and mean depth) and 2 outputs (container TEU, and number of direct calling shipping companies). Assurance Region(AR) is the most important tool to measure the efficiency of seaports, because individual seaports are characterized in terms of inputs and outputs. Traditional AHP and multiple regression analysis techniques have been used for measuring the AR. However, few previous studies exist in the field of seaport efficiency measurement. The main empirical results of this study are as follows. First, the efficiency ranking comparison between the two models (AHP/DEA-AR and multiple regression) using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Mann-Whitney signed-rank sum test were matched with the average level of 84.5 % and 96.3% respectively. When data for four years are used, the ratios of the significant probability are decreased to 61.4% and 92.5%. The policy implication of this study is that the policy planners of Korean port should introduce AHP/DEA-AR and multiple regression analysis when they measure the seaport efficiency and consider the port investment for enhancing the efficiency of inputs and outputs. The next study will deal with the subjects introducing the Fuzzy method, non-radial DEA, and the mixed analysis between AHP/DEA-AR and multiple regression analysis.
