  • In view of the fact that marine casualties have more often occurred recently, there is a need for ship-handling simulator as a useful tool for maritime training, safety assessment and so on. Moreover various kinds of hull forms have appeared for the purpose of improving ship manoeuvrality. Therefore ship-handling simulator is in need of a database for various ships, and it can make diverse maneuvering simulations possible to apply respective mathematical model to ship-handling simulator. In this paper, we adopted twin-screw and twin-rudder ship and discussed mathematical model of maneuvering motions for her. It was discussed from the viewpoint of hull damping forces at low advance speed and interaction between hull, propeller and rudder. Using this model, maneuvering motion of twin-screw and twin-propeller ship was simulated numerically and her principal manoeuvrability was examined.

  • SHS(Ship-Handling Simulator) is virtual generation of vessel traffic situation under various environmental conditions. Recent, with the introduction of MSA(Maritime Safety Audit), SHS is being used as a key facility to determine the safety of navigation. However, the current audit techniques specified in the implementation guidance of MSA have been prepared by generalizing common procedures and evaluation methods used by institutions operating simulator systems. Therefore, they need to be reviewed and supplemented. This study analyzed the adequacy of current audit techniques based on the limitations and problems, then suggested the advanced scheme of SHS such as standardization of ship models, standard manoeuvring and evaluation method. The results of this research will contribute to improving the quantification and reliability of audit techniques used in the MSA as well as upgrading of the simulator system.

  • Yaw-checking and course-keeping ability in IMO's ship manoeuvrability standards is reviewed from the viewpoint of safe operation. Three types of assumed series-ships, which have systematically different instability on course, are taken as tested models. The numerical simulation on Z-test is carried out in order to examine the correlation between known manoeuvrability and various kinds of overshoot angle. Then simulator experiments are executed with series-ships in situation of curved, narrow of waterway by five pilots in order to examine the correlation between known manoeuvrability and degree of manoeuvring difficulty. Three kinds of IMO's criterion concerning yaw-checking and course-keeping ability are discussed and new criteria are proposed.

  • Predicting and evaluating ship manoeuvring characteristics are very important not only for the design stage, but also for the existing vessels. There are several ways to predict ship's manoeuvrability and most of them are highly connected with the estimation of hydrodynamic coefficients. This paper presents a new estimation method using the system identification with mathematical algorithms for estimating hydrodynamic coefficient in the ship's mathematical model. Specifically a double ended ferry which equips four azimuth propulsion systems were chosen as benchmark ship and a set of benchmark data which is generated in the fast time simulation software was provided to conduct mathematical optimization process. Also the initial values for the optimization were borrowed from the empirical regression formulas of the simulation software of Rheinmetall Defence ship simulator. Therefore the newly suggested mathematical optimization algorithm gave a successful result for estimation hydrodynamic coefficients. Proper optimization conditions of the objective function and constraints were also verified during the study.

The numerical simulation on Z-test is carried out in order to examine the correlation between known manoeuvrability in spiral characteristics and various kinds of overshoot angle. IMO criteria for yaw-checking and course-keeping ability are discussed and revised criteria are proposed.
