A gun is still one of the major weapons of a combat ship. To assess the ship's fire control capability which is influenced by tracking system, fire control algorithm, gun, the ship itself, target behavior, environment and engagement situation, simulation system for gun-oriented engagement for surface ship is needed. This paper proposes the process for designing and implementing a gun-oriented engagement simulation system using DEVS(Discrete Event Simulation Specification), which is a formalism based on the set theory. It consists of the following activities : 1) analyzing the characteristics of a gun-oriented engagement, 2) constructing the deterministic model of the combat ship of study with DEVS, 3) modeling properties of each entity showing as stochastic errors. With this process, the gun-oriented engagement simulation system is developed and applied for the combat system under development.
Remote control is used for operating maritime autonomous surface ships. The operator controls the ship using control data generated by the remote control system. To ensure successful remote control, three principles must be followed: safety, reliability, and availability. To achieve this, the suitability of both the control data and operators for remote control must be established. Currently, there are no international regulations in place for evaluating remote control suitability through experiments on actual ships. Conducting such experiments is dangerous, costly, and time-consuming. The goal of this study is to develop a suitability evaluation method using the output values of control devices used in actual ship operation. The proposed method involves evaluating the suitability of data by analyzing the output values and evaluating the suitability of operators by examining their tracking of these output values. The experiment was conducted using a shore-based remote control system to operate the training ship 'Hannara' of Korea National Maritime and Ocean University. The experiment involved an iterative process of obtaining the operator's tracking value for the output value of the ship's control devices and transmitting and receiving tracking data between the ship and the shore. The evaluation results showed that the transmission and reception performance of control data was suitable for remote operation. However, the operator's tracking performance revealed a need for further education and training. Therefore, the proposed evaluation method can be applied to assess the suitability and analyze both the control data and the operator's compliance with the three principles of remote control.
A series of studies on the development of autonomous surface ships have been promoted in domestic and foreign countries. One of the main technologies for the development of autonomous ships is path-following control, which is closely related to securing the safety of ships at sea. In this regard, the path-following performance of an autonomous ship should be first evaluated at the design stage. The main aim of this study was to develop a visual and quantitative evaluation method for the path-following control performance of an autonomous ship at the design stage. This evaluation technique was developed using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based path-following control model together with a line-of-sight (LOS) guidance algorithm. CFD software was utilized to visualize waves around the ship, performing path-following control for visual evaluation. In addition, a quantitative evaluation was carried out using the difference between the desired and estimated yaw angles, as well as the distance difference between the planned and estimated trajectories. The results demonstrated that the ship experienced large deviations from the planned path near the waypoints while changing its course. It was also found that the fluid phenomena around the ship could be easily identified by visualizing the flow generated by the ship. It is expected that the evaluation method proposed in this study will contribute to the visual and quantitative evaluation of the path-following performance of autonomous ships at the design stage.
Maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) has been developed over the years. But, there are many unresolved problems. To overcome these problems, this study proposes connected ship navigation system. The system comprises a slave ship and a master ship that leads the slave ship. To implement this system, communication network, route planning algorithms, and controllers are designed. The communication network is built using the transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) socket communication method to exchange data between ships. The route planning algorithms calculate the course and distance of the slave ship using the middle latitude sailing method. Nomoto model is used as the mathematical model of the slave ship maneuvering motion. Then, the autoregressive with exogenous variables (ARX) model is used to estimate the parameters of Nomoto model. Based on the above model, the automatic steering controller is designed using a proportional-derivative (PD) control. Also, the speed controller is designed for the slave ship to maintain constant distance from the master ship. Sea experiments are conducted to verify the proposed system with two remodeled boats.
The battlefield environment in the maritime has been changed by advanced IT technology, variation of naval warfare condition, and developed military science and technology. In addition, state-of-the-art surface combatants has become to multi-purpose battleship that is heavily armed in order to meet actively in composed future sea battlefield condition and perform multi-purpose missions as well as having capability of strategic strike. To maximize the combat strength and survivability of ship, it is not only possible for Zumwalt(DDG-1000) class combatant to conduct multi-purpose mission with advanced weapon system installation, innovative hull form and upper structure such as deckhouse, shipboard high-powered sensor, total ship computing environment, and integrated power control but it was designed so that can be installed with energy based weapon systems in immediate future. Zumwalt class combatant has been set a high value with enormous threatening surface battleship in the present, it seems to be expected that this ship will be restraint means during operation in the littoral. The advent of Zumwalt class battleship in the US Navy can be constructed as a powerful intention of naval strength building for preparing future warfare. It is required surface ship that can be perform multi-purpose mission when the trend of constructed surface combatants was analyzed. In addition, shipboard system has been continuously modernized to keep the optimized ship and maximize the survivability with high-powered detection and surveillance sensor as well as modularity of combat system to efficient operation.
The purpose in having a control surface on a ship is to control the motion of the ship. The control surface may be composed entirely of a single movable surface or of a combination of fixed and movable portion A control surface has one sole function to perform in meeting its purpose, and that is to develop a control force in consequence of its orientation and movement relative to the water. The forces and moments generated as a result of this rotation and angle of attack then determine the maneuvering characteristics of the ship. In this paper the study of flapped rudder's 2-dimensional section was accomplished. Model tests had been carried out with different angles of attack of a main foil and flap's deflection angles to predict the performance of the flapped rudder and the 2 frame particle tracking method had been used to obtain the velocity distribution in the flow field $Re=2.8\times10^4$ had been used during the whole experiments and measured results had been compared with each other.
Research related to the technology developed for the Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS) is currently underway. Although one of those core technologies is collision-avoidance technology for ship operators at sea, no research has been done to objectively quantify its effectiveness. Therefore, this study was conducted to develop an evaluation model to examine the collision-avoidance ability of MASS. Ship-control experts performed a ship-handling simulation for each ship encounter type using the Full Mission Ship-handling Simulator (FMSS). We used the resulting data and technical statistics, to develop an evaluation model that utilized FMSS to quantify the operational capability of the collision-avoidance technology. This evaluation model also can be used at sea to assess deck officers' ability to use the technology and to improve and develop other MASS technologies.

The path following problem of a ship sailing in restricted waters under wind effect is investigated based on Robust $H_{\infty}$ Guaranteed Cost Control (RHGCC). To design the controller, the ship maneuvering motion is modeled as a linear uncertain system with norm-bounded time-varying parametric uncertainty. To counteract the bank and wind effects, the integral of path error is augmented to the original system. Based on the extended linear uncertain system, sufficient conditions for existence of the RHGCC are given. To obtain an optimal robust $H_{\infty}$ guaranteed cost control law, a convex optimization problem with Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) constraints is formulated, which minimizes the guaranteed cost of the close-loop system and mitigates the effect of external disturbance on the performance output. Numerical simulations have confirmed the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed control strategy for the path following goal of a ship sailing in restricted waters under wind effect.

A jet stream applied tangential to a curved surface in fluid increases lift force by strengthening circulation around the surface and this phenomenon is known as the Coanda effect. Many experimental and numerical studies have been performed on the Coanda effect and the results found to be useful in various fields of aerodynamics. Recently, preliminary studies on Coanda control surface are in progress to look for practical application in marine hydrodynamics since various control surfaces are used to control behaviors of ships and offshore structures. In the present study, the performance of a Coanda control surface with different geometries of the jet injection nozzle was surveyed to assess applicability to ship rudders. A numerical simulation was carried out to study flow characteristics around a section of a horn type rudder subjected to a tangential jet stream. The RANS equations, discretized by a cell-centered finite volume method were used for this computation after verification by comparing to the experimental data available. Special attentions have been given to the sensitivity of the lift performance of a Coanda rudder to the location of the slit (outlet) and intake of the gap between the horn and rudder surface at the various angles of attack. It is found that the location of the water intake is important in enhancing the lift because the gap functions as a conduit of nozzle generating a jet sheet on the rudder surface.

The present study considers the prediction of wind-induced heel of cruise ship and its stabilization. Wind load in ocean exerts on the surface of superstructure of cruise ship, which causes the heel moment on the ship. The calculation of wind load starts from choosing wind speed profile, so that the logarithmic wind profile model is applied in this study. Heel moment by wind load is calculated by adopting approximate formulation and applied to the ship motion analysis in time domain. Motion stabilizers, such as stabilizing fin and U-tube tank, are considered to reduce the heel effect as well as excessive roll motion. From this study, it is expected that the present method can be applied to the prediction and stabilization of the heel motion of cruise ships.
