Purpose: Lead has been widely used in radiation shielding for its low price and high workability. Recently in several europe countries, use of lead was banned for environmental issues. Also lead can cause health problems like alergies. Alternative materials for lead are highly required. The purpose of this study was to propose lead free radiation shielding material. Methods: Research of radiation shielding in Korea is not easy for certain limits such as radiation materials, experimental facilities and places. The collected data through the research were simulated using MCNPX. The simulation tools used for this study were utilized Monte Carlo method. Results: we suggest new design of lead free radiation shielding material using MCNPX code comparing shielding performance of new composite materials to lead. Conclusion: This newly introduced nano-scale composite of metal and polymer makes new chance for highly lightened radiation protective garments with endurable shielding performance.

It is important to study the shielding effectiveness(SE) of reinforcing material of plastic composite materials against the electromagnetic(EM) waves. In this paper, SE of the shielding material of EM waves was investigated with actual experiments. The materials used in this study were made up of film, fiber and powder of conductive materials - Cu, Al, CF etc. Also, The resin film was used as matrix. The experiment was carried out by using a shielding evaluator(Shielding box) TR17302 with an ADVANTEST spectrum analyzer, model R3361C. It was found from the experimental results that copper, aluminum and carbon fiber were good candidates as a shielding material against the EM waves with increasing the SE as the composite was laminated. The characteristics of the SE against the EM waves depended on a mode of preparation of specimen. The effects of interval of wires on the SE were studied when the orientation and the space of Cu wires were changed. The SE strongly depended on the. orientation and the space of the Cu wire. SE decreased as the space of the Cu wires was increasing.
Wireless power transfer technology is using the magnetic resonance recently drawing increased attention. It uses the resonance between transmitter and receiver coils to transfer power. Thus, it can improve the transfer distance and efficiency compared with the existing magnetic induction technique. The authors found from the previous study that the application of the superconductor coil to the magnetic resonance wireless power transfer system improved its efficiency. Its application to real life, however, requires the additional study on the effects of adjacent materials. In this study, the two resonance coils made by superconductor coils were used to aluminum and plastic shielding materials was placed between the coils. S-parameters were analyzed according to the position of the shielding material between the transmitter and receiver coils. As a result, the plastic of shielding material had no effect, but the aluminum of shielding material affected the wireless power transfer due to the shielding effectiveness.

Polyaniline free standing films are prepared by various processing. The properties of these films such as electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding efficiency are investigated. The conductivities of films doped with a camphorsulfonic acid and a silver are found to be 170/cm and 190S/cm, respectively, indicating metallic behavior. The films added silver, which are casted from hydrochloric acid and dodecylbenzensulfonic acid, show that the electromagnetic shielding efficiency are obtained 42∼52dB and 46∼56dB in the frequency range of 10MHz∼1GHz, respectively. This suggests that the films added silver, which is casted from dodecylbenzensulfonic acid, can be used as electromagnetic shielding material.

In modern times, threat of high power electromagnetic wave is increasing. When the electrical grid and communication network are attacked by these high power electromagnetic wave, the whole infrastructure is paralyzed. To protect the infrastructure from these high power electromagnetic wave threat, the shielding facility that can block high power electromagnetic wave is constructed. Also shielding effectiveness evaluation about the constructed facility is important. But, because of space efficiency and saving of construction cost to construct the actual shielding facility, the shielding room wall is generally adjacent to exterior concrete structures. As space between shielding facility wall and concrete structures is very small, arranging the transmitting antenna exterior shielding facility is realistically difficult. Therefore, in this research, The shielding effectiveness measurement plan in the state of exterior narrow space of HEMP shielding facility is presented. And to apply this plan, The influence of shielding effectiveness according to the size of the shielding facility is analyzed.

The low-temperature deposition of BaNi(2-x)CoxFe16O27 thin films with a Ba hexaferrite structure for electromagnetic shielding was studied. The BaNi(2-x)CoxFe16O27 thin films produced through the spin spray process were suitable for thin film deposition on a flexible substrate because it crystallized well at low temperature below 90℃. The change in shielding characteristics depending on the Co content of the BaNi(2-x)CoxFe16O27 thin film was investigated, and excellent shielding characteristics with S21 of -1 dB were obtained in a wide frequency range of 26~40 GHz when the Co content was 0.4 or more. The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in shielding properties caused by change in Co content in relation to phase changes in BaNi(2-x)CoxFe16O27 and obtain basic data for developing excellent flexible electromagnetic wave shielding materials.
In this study, isophtalic neopentyl glycol polyester (NPG-PES) based composites with different loading ratios of pure tungsten metal (W), tungsten (VI) oxide (WO3), tungsten boron (WB) and tungsten carbide (WC) composites were prepared as alternative shielding materials for ionizing electromagnetic radiation (IEMR) shielding. Structural characterizations of the composites were done. Gamma spectrometric analysis of composites for 80-2000 keV energy range was performed and their usability as IEMR shielding was discussed. As a result, the produced composites showed a shielding performance of 60-100% of the lead (the most widely used IEMR shielding material) depending on the reinforcement material, reinforcement loading rate and experimental conditions. Thus, it was reported that produced composites could be an alternative to lead shieldings that have several disadvantages as toxic properties, difficulty of processing and inelasticity.

Currently, the regulation system on controlling EMI has been strengthened throughout the world and this system has emerged as another invisible barrier from the advanced countries. Such a regulation is likely to expand in many various ways depending on the objective and type, and there has to be a fundamental EMI measure to respond this movement. This study is aimed at learning the EMI technology of communication system through the shielding material. It introduces the selection of appropriate shielding material and method of use, and it introduces the cases that resolved the actual EMI problem of the system that is manufactured by the company.
High-energy proton accelerators continue to be increasingly used in medical, research and industrial settings. However, due to the high energy of protons, a large number of secondary radiation occurs. Among them, neutrons are accompanied by difficulties of shielding due to various energy distribution and permeability. So In this study, we propose a shielding method that can shield neutrons most efficiently by using multiple-shielding material used as a decelerating agent or absorbent as well as a single concrete shielding. The flux of secondary neutrons showed a greater decrease in the flux rate when heavy concrete was used than in the case of ordinary concrete, and the maximum flux reduction was observed at the front position when using multiple shields. Multiple shielding can increase shielding efficiency more than single shielding however, As the thickness of the multiple shielding materials increased, the decline in flux was saturated. The mixture material showed higher shielding results than the polyethylene when using boron carbonate.
Lead apron is harmful to the human body because it is made at heavy metals, and when worn for long periods of time, it causes pain. Therefore, this paper intended to improve the defects of lead apron by using new material shields. For the comparative evaluation of lead and new material shieldes, the shielding rate and weight were measured and tested based on lead 0.5 mmPb. The rate of shielding was 97% based on lead at 0.5 mm thickness, while The new material shield T3 showed similar shielding rates as lead in 8 layers, and in T2 these values were measured in 11 layers. In addition, similar shielding rate was measured in 12 layers at B2, and 8 layers in BF, and 4 layers in $BF_2$. Comparing the weight of cases when commercialized with apron, T3, T2 and B2 were heavier than lead apron. But BF, $BF_2$ were lighter than the lead apron. Based on the results of the experiment, T3 and T2 can be used as an alternative to lead if human or environmental hazards are considered a priority. However, BF and $BF_2$ should be used if the reduction of external exposure is considered a priority.
