Water and Sediment Characteristics in the Shellfish Farms of the Western Part of Jinhae Bay

  • The environmental characteristics in shellfish farms were investigated in the western part of Jinhae Bay, 1996. During summer, anoxia and high nutrient concentrations were found in the bottom waters of shellfish farms. The concentrations of particulate organic species in seawaters were enriched, showing an average 57.44 uM for POC, an average 5.45 uM for PON, and an average 0.42uM for PP. The sediments environment in the farms was very polluted. The concentrations of COD and AVS were more than 20 mg/g.dry and 0.5 mg/g.dry, respectively. The total sedimentation rate was high as an average $7.81g/m^2/day$ with organic matter contents of $26\%$. Oxygen consumption rate was similar to polluted area as an average of $439mg/m^2/day$. Nutrient release rates were an average of $8.25mg/m^2/day$ for nitrogen and an average of $1.38mg/m^2/day$ for phosphorous. The cluster analysis through environmental data in summer indicated that DO, nutrient in the bottom water, and AVS in the sediment were important factors to characterize the polluted environmental site.

자란만 패류양식해역의 물리환경 설명을 위한 평균체류시간 산정 (Assessing Average Residence Time as a Physical Descriptor for Shellfish Farming Areas in Jaran Bay, Korea)

  • Residence time is defined as the time taken for a material in a system to leave the system. The residence time characteristics in shellfish aquaculture determine the dispersion of excretion from aquaculture farms, along with the supply of food by seawater exchange. In this study, we estimated the spatial distribution of average residence time in the shellfish farming area using a particle tracking model. As a result, a relatively short average residence time of about 20 days or less was calculated in most areas, but an average residence time of more than 40 days was calculated in the inner areas. Relatively long average residence times were calculated along the west coast compared to the east coast, with the longest average residence time of more than 50 days in the northwestern areas. It can be inferred that the disturbance of the benthic ecosystem caused by shellfish farms is likely to be large because of the relatively weak dispersion of excrement from shellfish farms located on the west coast, especially in the northwest region. This distribution of average residence time is important for understanding the potential effects of seawater exchange on the environmental sustainability of shellfish farms, along with the seawater circulation characteristics of Jaran Bay.

남해안 패류양식장에서 분리한 Vibrio parahaemolyticus의 병원인자 분포 및 항균제 내성 (Antimicrobial Resistance and Distribution of Virulence Factors of Vibrio parahaemolyticus Isolated from Shellfish Farms on the Southern Coast of Korea)

  • From 2013 through 2015, we investigated the contamination status and antimicrobial resistance patterns of pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus in commercially valuable seawater and shellfish (Oyster Crassostrea gigas, short-neck clam Venerupis philippinarum, ark shell Scapharca broughtonii and mussel Mytilus galloprovinciallis) from the southern coast of Korea. The detection rate of V. parahaemolyticus was highest in short-neck clams (23.7%), followed by ark shells (19.2%), oysters (15.9%), mussels (13.6%), and seawater (8.6%). The following percentages of PCR assays of shellfish were positive for the thermostable direct hemolysin-related hemolysin gene (trh) : oysters (12.8%), short-neck clams(11.8%), and ark shells (3.4%). Similar assays for the thermostable direct hemolysin gene (tdh) resulted in positive results for short-neck clams (5.9%) and ark shells (3.4%). Antimicrobial resistance was present in 100% of 8 tdh (+) and 2 trh (+) V. parahaemolyticus isolates challenged with ampicillin. However, all pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus were sensitive to 14 other antibiotics. To ensure the safety of shellfish consumption, the continuous monitoring of the prevalence and distribution of virulence factors of V. parahaemolyticus in shellfish farms is needed.

남해연안 패류양식장의 부영양화 특성 (Eutrophication Characteristics in the Shellfish Farms, the Southern Coastal Sea of Korea)

  • 우리나라 남해연안의 해양수산자원과 경관은 생태학적인 관점에서뿐만 아니라 경제적으로도 매우 중요하다. 밀식 등 과다한 양식과 하ㆍ폐수의 유입으로 이 해역의 부영양화 현상은 더욱 심각하게 되었다. 본 연구는 1998년부터 1999년까지 여름과 겨울로 구분하여 채취한 해수와 퇴적물의 분석결과로부터 남해연안의 부영양화 상태를 파악하였고, 퇴적물 오염정도, 퇴적물로부터 의 영양염류 용출과 산소소비량을 측정하였다. 또한 양식장 자가오염의 주원인중의 하나인 양식장의 부착생물에 의한 배설물량을 측정하였다. 양식장의 해수의 영양염류 농도는 일반해양보다 대체적으로 높게 나타났다. 양식장에서 채취된 여름의 퇴적물 중 COD와 총인의 농도가 겨울의 퇴적물보다 높은 경향을 보여주었다. 우리나라 남해연안의 패류양식장 퇴적물은 부영양화 물질과 저산소층 수괴의 주요 오염원으로 작용하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

패류양식어장 밀집해역의 퇴적환경내 유기물 분포특성 -여자만과 남해 강진만- (Organic Enrichment and Pollution in Surface Sediments from Shellfish Farming in Yeoja Bay and Gangjin Bay, Korea)

  • Organic enrichment was investigated in surface sediments from the Yeoja and Gangjin Bays of Korea, which contain dense shellfish farms, in order to evaluate the contamination status and temporal changes in shellfish farming along these coasts. The degree of organic enrichment was determined using geochemical indicators (chemical oxygen demand, ignition loss, acid volatile sulfide, total organic carbon in sediments, and total nitrogen in sediments, ammonium and nitrate in pore water, and bioluminescence inhabitation for sediments). Temporal changes in organic enrichment conditions were detected by comparing our 2012 data to those previously reported from a survey conducted in 1999/2000. Organic enrichment was significantly higher in September than in May and July, in Gangjin Bay than in Yeoja Bay, and significantly higher in shellfish farms than in reference sites not used to culture shellfish. Ammonium concentrations in pore water were two orders of magnitude greater than nitrate concentrations, suggesting that these bays represent nitrogen-reducing environments.

Distributions of Metallic Elements in the Sediment Cores from Several Shellfish-Farming Bays in Korea

  • We report the distribution of $^{210}$ Pb and various metallic elements (Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, Ti, Mn, Sr, Ba, Zn, V, Cr, Zr, Ni, Cu, and Y) in the sediment cores from six shellfish-farming bays in the South Sea of Korea. The $^{210Pb}$ inventories in Deukryang, Gwangyang, and Goseong Bay cores were comparable to those expected from the known fallout input. However, the $^{210}$ Pb inventories were two times higher in Jinju, Gangjin, and Hansan-Koeje Bay cores, suggesting an important role of other sources such as fluvial inputs. Based on the enrichment factor analyses, non-detrital fractions of all the measured elements were found to be insignificant. The Mn was highly enriched only in the surface sediments of the Jinju and Goseong Bay, which implies that the surface-sediment environment of these bays is efficiently oxidizing Mn remobilized from either pore waters or bottom seawaters. These data set provides the sources of heavy metal in sediment around shellfish farms and the current level of metallic elements for the future monitoring.

통영 도산·풍화 해역 내 하수처리장 배출수가 패류생산해역에 미치는 영향 평가 (Assessment of the Impact of Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluents on Shellfish Harvesting Areas in the Dosan-Poonghwa Sea Area of Tongyeong)

  • Tongyeong is an important shellfish harvesting area, that hosts the largest designated sea area for shellfish exports in South Korea. In particular, the Dosan-Poonghwa Sea Area in Tongyeong is a semi-enclosed bay with poor water circulation and significant pollution due to its proximity to urban areas. This study examined the distribution of fecal pollution indicators (total coliforms, fecal coliforms, male-specific coliphages, and norovirus G1/G2) in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). This study assessed the impact of the effluent discharge on shellfish harvesting areas in the Dosan-Poonghwa Sea Area to better safeguard shellfish farms and guarantee the safety of harvested shellfish. A strong positive correlation was observed between total and fecal coliforms in both influent (r=0.974, P<0.01) and effluent (r=0.779, P<0.05), with no other significant correlations observed. The impacts of the effluent was evaluated according to NSSP guidelines. The volume of seawater required to dilute the effluent discharged per day was calculated. This evaluation indicated that surrounding aquaculture areas were not impacted, and no viruses were detected in oysters collected from the Dosan-Pungwha Sea Area.

순천만 패류 양식장 3개소의 지화학적 특성과 저서생물상 분포 -가리맛조개 양식장과 새꼬막 양식장- (Geochemical Characteristics and Benthos Distribution in the Three Shellfish Farms in Suncheon Bay, Korea)

  • This study was performed to investigate the geochemical and benthic environment of three shellfish farms in Suncheon Bay during the period of September 2014 ~ April 2015. Three sampling stations were selected; St.1 is the shellfish farm of razor clam near Jangsan area. St.2 is the shellfish farm of small ark shell near Hwapo area and St.3 is the shellfish farm of razor clam near Yongdu area. Razor clam was the dominant species at St.1, small ark shell and granulated ark shell were dominant at St.2 and St.3, respectively. Granulated ark shell inhabited St.3, although it is not cultured at that station. This station's exposure to air during the ebb tide and sediment composition likely provides the appropriate habitat for granulated ark shell species. Analysis of the number of different species showed that 8 benthos species were found to be distributed at St.1, 18 species at St.2, and 13 species at St.3. Among three stations, the highest Ignition Loss (IL), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Acid Volatile Sulfide (AVS) values were obtained from the sediment at St.2. The analysis of pore water from St.2 also showed the highest values of Total Organic Carbon (TOC), ammonia ($NH_4^+$), Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) and phosphate ($PO_4^{3-}$). These results are related to the fact that species dominance and richness is the highest in St.2.

득량만과 가막양 패류양식장의 부영양화 (Eutrophication of Shellfish Farms in Deukryang and Gamagyang Bays)

  • 남해안 서부에 위치한 득량만과 가막양에서 1981년 하계 중 해수의 클로로필-a양과 저이 중 COD, 강열감대, 파오파이틴양 그리고 황화물양을 측정하였다. 노경노은 약 $300km^2$로서 근래 피조개의 채묘 및 양성이 급증하고 있고, 가업양은 약 $150km^2$로서 수하식에 의한 굴 선성이 많다. 득량만 해수 중 클로로필-a양은 9월에 많아 $1.0\sim5.0{\mu}g/l$로서 평균 $2.5{\mu}g/l$이었다. 양적인 분포에선 득량만의 서북쪽에서 많았다. 저이 중 유기물양은 양서 모두, COD$5.0\sim10.0mg/g$, 강열감양$5.0\sim9.0\%$,체페오파이틴양 $2.0\sim 5.0{\mu}g/g$ 건이이었으며 황화물양은 $0.1\sim0.3mg/g$ 건이이었다. 유기물과 황화물양 모두, 득량만에서는 만입구에서 깊숙히 들어갈수록 증가하였고, 가막양에서는 만의 서편과 서북쪽에 많았다. 상기의 모든 양은 낙산$\cdot$거제만의 양들과 비슷하거나 약간 적었다. 클로로필-a양에 의한 해수의 부영선화는 제산$\cdot$거제만과 같이 중간 수준인데 비해, 저이의 부영양화는 초기단계이었다. 저이중 COD와 페오파이틴양으로부터 산출한 저오염도는$6\sim11$로서, 낙산$\cdot$거제만의 $7\sim18$, 진해서의 $11\sim30$에 비해 낮았다. 이는, COD양이 적다는 이유도 있지만, 굴 양성을 많이 하는 낙산$\cdot$거제만이나 진해만 서부해역과는 달리 페오파인틴양이 COD양보다 적었기 때문이다.
