25 seismic shot gathers were obtained to study the two dimensional subsurface shear wave velocities in a landfilled area near the Keum river estuary. Borehole(BH#1 and BH#2) tests at two sites were made in the same area. Standard Penetration Tests were also performed at the same time. The 2-D shear wave velocity structure resulted from the inversion of the seismic data shows that the subsurface of the studied area consists of the upper 1${\sim}$3 meter thick layer(200 m/sec${\sim}$700 m/sec), the middle 5${\sim}$8 m thick low velocity layer(100 m/sec${\sim}$400 m/sec), and the lower layer of 1000m/sec or higher shear wave velocities. The thickness of the low velocity layer decreases from the BH #1 site to the BH #2 site. The depth to the basement also decreases toward the BH #2 site. The examination of the S wave velocity structure, the description of the geologic contents, and the Standard Penetration Test values indicate that the middle layer of low shear wave velocity may be related to the clay content of the layer. On the other hand, the Standard Penetration test values increase with depth, showing no significant relationship with the geologic contents of the subsurface. This study shows that the inversion of surface waves can be effective in the study of the shear wave velocity, especially in the area where low velocity layers can be found. The method of inversion of surface waves also can be used as a viable technique to overcome the limit of the seismic refraction method.
The evaluation of shear modulus (or shear wave velocity) profile of site is very important in the various fields of geotechnical engineering. To obtain shear wave velocity profile, various in-situ seismic methods using surface waves have been developed. These surface wave based in-situ seismic methods have their own strength and weakness. In this study, new seismic site characterization method using the harmonic wavelet analysis of wave (HWAW) was proposed to overcome some of weaknesses in the existing surface wave based seismic site characterization methods. HWAW method which is based on time-frequency analysis using harmonic wavelet transform have been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. In order to estimate the applicability of HWAW method, field tests were performed. Through field applications and comparison with other test results, the applicability of the proposed method were verified.

The evaluation of field degree of consolidation on soft clays has been an important problem in geotechnical areas. Monitoring either settlements or pore water pressures has been widely applied in the filed, but occasionally they have some problems. This study addresses the suggestion and application of another method for evaluating the degree of consolidation using shear wave velocities. A research site where soft clay layers were consolidated by surcharging loads was chosen. Laboratory tests were performed to determine the relation between shear wave velocity and effective stress. Field seismic tests were conducted several times during the consolidation of the clay layers. The tests results show that the shear wave velocity increased significantly as clays consolidated. The shear wave velocities at each field stress states were derived from the laboratory results and the degree of consolidation was evaluated by comparing the shear wave velocities obtained by laboratory and field seismic methods. In most stress states, the degree of consolidation evaluated using the shear wave velocity matched well with that obtained from field settlement record, showing the potential of applying the method using shear waves in the evaluation of field degree of consolidation on soft clay deposits.
Rayleigh waves which has more than 70% of the total seismic energy is the principal component of ground roll. Frequency component of a surface wave has a different propagation velocity, that is, phase velocity, which results in a different wavelength called dispersion. Rayleigh wave is one of the most common ways to use the dispersive properties of surface waves. MASW is a seismic method to evaluate shear-wave velocity information of the ground.
Two-dimensional velocity tomograms of P- and S-waves were obtained by inverting traveltimes of first arrivals. The two sections of shear-wave velocity show similar features as a whole, with smaller values on the section from surface wave dispersions. Difficulties in picking SH-wave phases due to noise and later arrivals than P waves and PS converted waves are experienced. In addition, a flat layer model based on the surface wave inversion prohibits applications of the method where sgear wave velocities vary strongly in the lateral direction.
Shear modulus is directly linked to material's stiffness and is one of the most critical engineering parameters. Seismically, shear-wave velocity (Vs) is its best indicator. Although methods like refraction, down-hole, and cross-hole shear-wave surveys can be used, they are generally known to be tougher than any other seismic methods in field operation, data analysis, and overall cost. On the other hand, surface waves, commonly known as ground roll, are always generated in all seismic surveys with the strongest energy, and their propagation velocities are mainly determined by Vs of the medium. Furthermore, sampling depth of a particular frequency component of surface waves is in direct proportion to its wavelength and this property makes the surface wave velocity frequency dependent, i.e., dispersive. The multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) method tries to utilize this dispersion property of surface waves for the purpose of Vs profiling in 1-D (depth) or 2-D (depth and surface location) format. The active MASW method generates surface waves actively by using an impact source like sledgehammer, whereas the passive method utilizes those generated passively by cultural (e.g., traffic) or natural (e.g., thunder and tidal motion) activities. Investigation depth is usually shallower than 30 m with the active method, whereas it can reach a few hundred meters with the passive method. Overall procedures with both methods are briefly described.

Measurement of elastic constants is crucial for engineering aspects of predicting the behavior of materials under load as well as structural health monitoring of material degradation. Ultrasonic velocity measurement for material properties has been broadly used as a nondestructive evaluation method for material characterization. In particular, pulse-echo method has been extensively utilized as it is not only simple but also effective when only one side of the inspected objects is accessible. However, the conventional technique in this approach measures longitudinal and shear waves individually to obtain their velocities. This produces a set of two data for each measurement. This paper proposes a simultaneous sensing system of longitudinal waves and shear waves for elastic constant measurement. The proposed system senses both these waves simultaneously as a single overlapped signal, which is then analyzed to calculate both the ultrasonic velocities for obtaining elastic constants. Therefore, this system requires just half the number of data to obtain elastic constants compared to the conventional individual measurement. The results of the proposed simultaneous measurement had smaller standard deviations than those in the individual measurement. These results validate that the proposed approach improves the efficiency and reliability of ultrasonic elastic constant measurement by reducing the complexity of the measurement system, its operating procedures, and the number of data.
Shear wave velocity was measured and grain size analysis was conducted on two core samples obtained in unconsolidated marine sediments of the western continental margin, the East Sea. A pulse transmission technique based on the Hamilton frame was used to measure shear wave velocity. Duomorph ceramic bender transducer-receiver elements were used to generate and detect shear waves in sediment samples. Time delay was calculated by changing the sample length from the transducer-receiver element. Time delay is 43.18 μs and shear wave velocity (22.49 m/s) is calculated from the slope of regression line. Shear wave velocities of station 1 and 2 range from 8.9 to 19.0 m/s and from 8.8 to 22 mis, respectively. Shear wave velocities with depth in both cores are qualitatively in agreement with the compared model〔1〕, although the absolute value is different. The sediment type of two core samples is mud (mean grain size, 8-9Φ). Shear wave velocity generally increases with sediment depth, which is suggesting normally consolidated sediments. The complicated variation of velocity anisotropy with depth at station 2 is probably responsible for sediment disturbance by possible gas effect.
The changes of parameters of pressure and velocity of propagation of elastic pressure and shear waves in uniformly deformed solid compressible media are studied within the nonclassically linearized approach (NLA) of nonlinear elastodynamics to create a new theoretical basis of the geomechanical interpretation of various groups of geophysical observational and experimental data. The cases of small and large deformations are considered while their describing by various elastic potentials, i.e., problems considering the physical and geometric nonlinearity. Convenient analytical formulae are obtained to calculate the indicated parameters in the deformed isotropic media within the nonclassical linear and nonlinear solution in the NLA. Specific numerical experiments are conducted in case of overall compression of various materials. It is shown that the method (generally accepted in the studies of mechanics of standard constructional materials) of additional linearization (relative to the pressure parameter) in the basic correlations of the NLA introduces substantial quantitative and qualitative errors into the results at significant preliminary deformations. The influences of the physical and geometric nonlinearity on the studied characteristics of the medium are large in various materials and differ qualitatively. The contribution of nonlinear components to the values of the considered parameters prevails over linear components at large deformations. When certain critical values of compression deformations in the medium are achieved, elastic waves with actual velocity cannot propagate in it. The values of the critical deformations for pressure and shear waves differ within different elastic potentials and variants of the theory of initial deformations.
In this article, a novel propagation formulation of Rayleigh waves in a compressible isotropic half-space with impedance boundary condition is proposed by embedding the normal stress. In a two-dimensional case, it is assumed that a design boundary is free of normal traction and a shear traction depends on linearly a normal component of displacements multiplied by frequencies. Therefore, impedance boundary conditions affect the normal stress, where the impedance parameters correspond to dimensions of stresses over velocity. On the other hand, vanished impedance values are traction-free boundary conditions. The main purpose of this article is to present theoretically the existence and uniqueness of a Rayleigh wave formulation relying on secular equation's mathematical analyses. Its velocity varies along with the impedance parameters. Moreover, numerical experiments with different values for the velocity of Rayleigh waves are carried out. The present Rayleigh waves study is a fundamental step in analyzing the cause and effect of physical states such as building or structure damages resulting from natural dynamics. The results of the study generate a basic design formulation theory to test the effects of Rayleigh waves affecting structures when an earthquake occurs. The presence and uniqueness of the proposed formulation is verified by mutual comparisons of several numerical examples.
