Experimental study is performed to investigate the variation of shear strength of reinforced concrete beams according to design parameters. The major parameters are loading condition, shear span-to-depth ratio, ratio of tensile longitudinal reinforcement, prestress and boundary rigidity.14 reinforced concrete beams without web reinforcement are tested under monotonic downward loading. The shear strength of the tested specimens were compared with the prediction by design code and Choi's method.
The failure behavior of reinforced concrete beams is governed by the mechanical relationships between the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, load and support conditions, and material properties. In this study, two simple indeterminate strut-tie models which can reflect all characteristics of the failure behavior of reinforced concrete beams were proposed. The proposed models are effective for the beams with shear span-to-effective depth ratio of less than 3. For each model, a load distribution ratio, defined as the fraction of load transferred by a truss mechanism, is also proposed to help structural designers perform the rational design of the beams by using the strut-tie model approaches of current design codes. In the determination of the load distribution ratios, the effect of the primary design variables including shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, and compressive strength of concrete was reflected through numerous material nonlinear analysis of the proposed indeterminate strut-tie models. In the companion paper, the validity of the proposed models and load distribution ratios was examined by applying them to the evaluation of the failure strength of 335 reinforced concrete beams tested to failure by others.

The resistance-demand approach has emerged as an effective approach for determining the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams. This approach is based on the fact that both the shear resistance and shear demand are correlated with flexural tensile strain from compatibility and equilibrium requirements. The basic shear strength, under a given loading is determined from the intersection of the demand and resistance curves. This paper verifies the applicability of resistance-demand procedure for predicting the shear capacity of high strength concrete beams without web reinforcement. A total of 18 beams were constructed and tested in four-point bending up to failure. The test variables included the longitudinal reinforcement ratio, the shear span to depth ratio, and the beam depth. The shear capacity of the beams was predicted using the proposed procedure and compared with the experimental values. The results of the comparison showed good prediction capability and can be useful to design practice.

Currently, composite construction of prestressed Precast Concrete (PC) and Cast-In-Place (CIP) concrete with different concrete strengths are frequently used in the modular construction. However, current design codes do not clearly define shear design methods for such composite beams. In this present study, simply supported prestressed PC-CIP composite beams without vertical shear reinforcement or only with horizontal shear reinforcement were tested to evaluate the effect of prestressing on the shear strength and the shear design method for such composite members. The test variables were the area ratio of PC and CIP concretes, prestressing force, shear span-to-depth ratio, and shear reinforcement ratio. The results showed that the shear strength was increased by the increase of prestressing force and prestressed PC area, and the decrease of shear span-to-depth ratio.

Investigations on the behavior of steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams subjected to predominant shear are accomplished to determine their diagonal shear strength including ultimate shear strength. The parameters varied were the volume fraction(Vf) of the fibers, shear span depth ratio(a/d). The test result show that diagonal shear strength and ultimate shear strength are increased siginificantly due to crack arrest mechanism. Predictive equations are suggested for evaluating the diagonal cracking strength and ultimate shear strength of the fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams.
Recent advances in material technology has accelerated the development of higher strength concretes using lightweight manufactured aggregates.Concretes with these chnractcristics are designable since the reductiun of dead loads and the increase in load capacity can oflix substantial cost reductions. Alt,hough thesc rharackristics are very desirable, very little information is availablc to the structural rivic;~~,cher about the properties of highstrength lightweight concrete. In general, shear strength of reinforced concrete beams is dependent on the compressive strength of concrete. the longitudinal steel ratio, the shear span to the depth ratio and shear reinforcement. In this study. eight single reinforced high strength lightweight concrete beams were tested to investigate their behavior and to determine their ultimate shear strengths. The variables studied in this investigation are shear span to effective depth ratio a/d = 1.5. 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 : vertical shear reinforcement ratio ${\rho}_8= 0%$ and 1.136%. Test results were analyzed and compared with strengths predicted by ACI code equation. Zsutty's equation. As the results, ACI Eq.(ll-3) and ACI Eq.(ll-6) are conservative for high strength lightweight concrete beam. Also Zsuttyrs Eq. is conservative for beams except short beams. (a/d= 1.5)
Currently, deep beams are designed according to ACT 318-99 equations derived from experimental data for slender beams with normal-strength concrete. In addition, there is relatively limited information on high-strength concrete deep beams with shear reinforcement. The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the shear behavior of high-strength concrete deep beams and to grasp the conservatism of ACI shear design provisions. Experimental results on the shear behavior of 22 deep beams under two equal symmetrically placed point loads are reported. compressive strength of concrete cylinder was 800kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and main variables were vertical and horizontal shear reinforcement and shear span-to-overall depth ratio (а/h). Test results showed that for high-strength concrete deep beams with shear span-to-overall depth ratio exceeding 0.75, the vertical shear reinforcement more effectively resisted the shear load than horizontal shear reinforcement. In high-strength concrete deep beams, ACI shear design provisions tended to underestimate the effect of strut-tie action and vertical shear reinforcement and overestimate the ones of horizontal shear reinforcement. Based on the experimental results of high-strength concrete deep beams and shear friction theory, this study modified the equations on the shear capacity specified by the ACI provisions.

The application of the compressive force path method for the design of earthquake-resistant reinforced concrete structural walls with a shear span-to-depth ratio larger than 2.5 has been shown by experiment to lead to a significant reduction of the code specified transverse reinforcement within the critical lengths without compromising the code requirements for structural performance. The present work complements these findings with experimental results obtained from tests on structural walls with a shear span-to-depth ratio smaller than 2.5. The results show that the compressive force path method is capable of safeguarding the code performance requirements without the need of transverse reinforcement confining concrete within the critical lengths. Moreover, it is shown that ductility can be considerably increased by improving the strength of the two bottom edges of the walls through the use of structural steel elements extending to a small distance of the order of 100 mm from the wall base.
A wide range of experimental bases and improved performance with different forms of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) have attracted researchers to produce eco-friendly and sustainable structures. The reinforced concrete (RC) beam's shear capacity has remained a complex phenomenon because of various parameters affecting. Design recommendations for the shear capacity of RC elements having FRP reinforcement need a more experimental database to improve design recommendations because almost all the recommendations replace different parameters with FRP's. Steel and FRP are fundamentally different materials. One is ductile and isotropic, whereas the other is brittle and orthotropic. This paper presents experimental results of the investigation on the beams with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforcement as longitudinal bars and stirrups. Total twelve beams with GFRP reinforcement were prepared and tested. The cross-section of the beams was rectangular of size 230 × 300 mm, and the total length was 2000 mm with a span of 1800 mm. The beams are designed for simply-supported conditions with the two-point load as per specified load positions for different beams. Flexural reinforcement provided is for the balanced conditions as the beams were supposed to test for shear. Two main variables, such as shear span and spacing of stirrups, were incorporated. The beams were designed as per American Concrete Institute (ACI) ACI 440.1R-15. Relation of VExp./VPred. is derived with axial stiffness, span to depth ratio, and stirrups spacing, from which it is observed that current design provisions provide overestimation, particularly at lower stirrups spacing.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear strength of reinforced concrete beam according to beam section size and shear reinforcement ratio. A total of nine specimens were tested and designed concrete compressive strength is 24 MPa. The main variables are shear reinforcement ratio and beam section size fixed with shear span to depth ratio (a/d = 2.5), the tensile reinforcement ratio (${\rho}=0.013$) and width to depth ratio (h/b = 1.5). The test specimens were divided into three series of S1 ($225{\times}338mm$), S2 ($270{\times}405mm$) and S3 ($315{\times}473mm$), respectively. The experimental results show that all specimens represent diagonal tensile failure. For $S^*-1$ specimens (d/s=0), the shear strength decreased by 33% and 46% with increasing the beam effective depth, 26% and 33% for $S^*-2$ specimens (d/s=1.5) and 16% and 20% for $S^*-3$ specimens (d/s=2.0) respectively. As the shear reinforcement ratio increases, the decrease range in shear strength decreases. In other words, this means that as the shear reinforcement ratio increases, the size effect of concrete decreases. In the S1 series, the shear strength increased by 39% and 41% as the shear reinforcement ratio increased, 54% and 76% in the S2 series and 66% and 100% in the S3 series, respectively. As the effective depth of beam increases, the increase range of shear strength increases. This means that the effect of shear reinforcement increases as the beam effective depth increases. As a result of comparing experimental values with theoretical values by standard equation and proposed equation, the ratio by Zsutty and Bazant's equation is 1.30 ~ 1.36 and the ratio by KBC1 and KBC2 is 1.55~.163, respectively. Therefore, Zsutty and Bazant's proposed equation is more likely to reflect the experimental data. The current standard for shear reinforcement ratio (i.e., $S_{max}=d/2$) is expected to be somewhat relaxed because the ratio of experimental values to theoretical values was found to be 1.01 ~ 1.44 for most specimens.
