This paper proposes a modified bar simulation method for analyzing the shear lag effect of variable sectional box girder with multiple cells. This theoretical method formulates the equivalent area of stiffening bars and the allocation proportion of shear flows in webs, and re-derives the governing differential equations of bar simulation method. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified by the model test and finite element (FE) analysis of a simply supported multi-cell box girder with constant depth. Subsequently, parametric analysis is conducted to explore the mechanism of shear lag effect of varied sectional cantilever box girder with multiple cells. Results show that the shear lag behavior of variable box-section cantilever box girder is weaker than that of box girder with constant section. It is recommended to make the gradient of shear flow in the web with respect to span length vary as smoothly as possible for eliminating the shear lag effect of box girder. An effective countermeasure for diminishing shear lag effect is to increase the number of box chambers or change the variation manner of bridge depth. The shear lag effect of varied sectional cantilever box girder will get more server when the length of central flanges is shorter than 0.26 or longer than 0.36 times of total width of top flange, as well as the cantilever length exceeds 0.29 times of total length of box's flange. Therefore, the distance between central webs can adjust the shear lag effect of box girder. Especially, the width ratio of cantilever plate with respect to total length of top flange is proposed to be no more 1/3.

This paper focuses on the premature failure of RC beams bonded with FRP. A number of failure modes for RC beams bonded with FRP have been observed in numerous experimental studies during past decade. Particularly, Rip-off failure and Debonding failure were majority failure modes in RC beams bonded with FRP. Rip-off failure occurred at the plate end due to high interfacial shear and normal stresses however Debonding failure was caused by the yielding of reinforcing bar and the increasing of shear deformation in shear span. On the basis of premature failure mechanism in RC beams bonded with FRP, Basic strengthening length and Premature failure criteria were derived

Recently, steel-concrete composite structures are widely used in bridge and building constructions. In this paper, a new type of steel-concrete composite deck with profiled steel sheeting is proposed to replace the conventional cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck. Perfobond rib shear connectors were utilized to provide horizontal shear resistance between the profiled sheeting and the concrete. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed deck system, 8 full-scale deck specimens for PSC girder bridge were fabricated. The specimens were tested with four different shear span lengths to determine the horizontal shear resistance of the deck under a static monotonic loading. For comparison purpose, two reinforced concrete decks were also fabricated and tested. The horizontal shear resistance of the proposed deck system was calculated using the m-k method.
This paper will describe the experimental results on the shear behaviors of reinforced concrete (RC) beam with recycled coarse aggregate (RCA). The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the influences of different RCA replacement percentage (i.e, 0%, 30%, 60%, and 100%) on the shear performance of reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement. Eight large-scale RC beams without shear reinforcement were manufactured and tested to shear failure. All had a rectangular cross-section with 400mm width ${\times}$ 600mm depth and 6000mm length, and were tested with a shear span-to-depth of 5.1. The results showed that the deflection and shear strength were little affected by the different RCA replacement percentage. Actual shear strength of each RCA beam was compared with the shear strength predicted using the provisions of ACI 318 code and Zsutty'e equation for shear design of RC beams. ACI 318 code predicted the shear strength of RCA reinforced concrete beams well.
Shear tests were performed on four ends of full scale U-type beams which were designed by optimum process for the depth with a live load of 4903Pa. The ratio of width to depth of full scale 10.5 m-span, composite U-type beams with topping concrete was greater than 2. Following conclusions were obtained from the evaluation on the shear performance of these precast prestressed beams. 1) Those composite U-type beams performed homogeneously up to the failure load, and conformed to ACI Strength design methods in shear and flexural behaviors. 2) The anchorage requirements on development length of strand In the ACI Provisions preyed to be a standard to determine a failure pattern within the limited test results of the shallow U-type beams. 3) Those all shear crackings developed from the end of the beams did not lead to anchorage failure. However, initiated strand slip may leads the bond failure by increasing the size of diagonal shear crackings. 4) The flexural mild reinforcement around the vertical center of beam section was effective for developments of a ductile failure.

The elastic properties of core affect mechanical properties and deformation behaviours of the lightweight sandwich panel. The objective of the present paper is to estimate experimentally Young's and shear moduli of a core in internally structured boned (ISB) panel with woven metal as inner structures using the deflection theory of sandwich beam considered core stiffness. Three points bending experiments were performed to obtain force-deflection curves of the designed ISB panel in each material direction. The elastic and shear moduli of the core in each material direction were estimated from slopes and intercepts of relationships between compliance per the span length and square of the span length, respectively. The results of the estimation showed that the fabric technology of the woven metal affects the variation of the elastic properties in the core. Through the comparison of shear moduli and force-deflection curves of the proposed method and those without considering the core stiffness, it was shown that the core stiffness should be considered to estimate properly the Young's and shear moduli of ISB panels. Finally, the contribution ratio of bending and shear deflections of ISB panels to the total deflection was quantitatively examined.
The number of studies investigating the response of concrete-filled tubes (CFTs) under shear has been very limited in the literature. This lack of research has been traditionally reflected in international design standards as rather conservative shear strength predictions for CFTs. The dearth of research on the shear response is even more pronounced for the case of concrete-filled stainless steel tubes (CFSSTs). In line with this, the present study investigates the shear response of circular and square CFSSTs using advanced finite element (FE) analysis. A thorough review of the previous studies on the shear response of carbon steel CFTs is provided along with a summary of past experimental programmes as well as the developed and codified design methods. A comprehensive numerical study is then conducted considering a wide range of circular and square, austenitic and lean duplex CFSSTs with different concrete infills and shear span-to-depth ratios. The effect of the tail length on the shear response is investigated and the minimum required tail length for achieving full shear capacity is established. The simulations are also used to highlight the importance of the dilation of the concrete core in the shear response of concrete-filled tubes and its relationship with the utilised boundary conditions. Furthermore, the numerical results are compared in detail with the predictions of design approaches developed previously for carbon steel CFTs and their accuracy and applicability to the stainless steel counterpart are demonstrated and recommendations are made accordingly.

This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of composite floor slab comprised by a new steel sheet and concrete slab. The strength of composite slabs depends mainly on the strength of the connection between the steel sheet and concrete, which is denoted by longitudinal shear strength. The composite slabs have three main failures modes, failure by bending, vertical shear failure and longitudinal shear failure. These modes are based on the load versus deflection curves that are obtained in bending tests. The longitudinal shear failure is brittle due to the mechanical connection was not capable of transferring the shear force until the failure by bending occurs. The vertical shear failure is observed in slabs with short span, large heights and high concentrated loads subjected near the supports. In order to analyze the behavior of the composite slab with a new steel sheet, six bending tests were undertaken aiming to provide information on their longitudinal shear strength, and to assess the failure mechanisms of the proposed connections. Two groups of slabs were tested, one with 3000 mm in length and other with 1500 mm in length. The tested composite slabs showed satisfactory composite behavior and longitudinal shear resistance, as good as well, the analysis confirmed that the developed sheet is suitable for use in composite structures without damage to the global behavior.
Many existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures need to be strengthening for reason such as poor construction quality, low ductility or designing without considering seismic effects. One of the strengthening methods is strengthening technique with eccentrically braced frames (EBFs). The characteristic element of these systems is the link element and its length is very important in terms of seismic behavior. The link element of Y shaped EBF systems (YEBFs) is designed as a short shear element. Different limits are suggested in the literature for the link length. This study to aim experimentally investigate the effect of the link length for the suggested limits on the behavior of the RC frame system and efficiency of strengthening technique. For this purpose, a total of 5 single story, single span RC frame specimens were produced. The design of the RC frames was made considering seismic design deficiencies. Four of the produced specimens were strengthened and one of them remained as bare specimen. The steel YEBFs were used in strengthening the RC frame and the link was designed as a shear element that have different length with respect to suggested limits in literature. The length of links was determined as 50mm, 100mm, 150mm and 200mm. All of the specimens were tested under cyclic loads. The obtained results show that the strengthening technique improved the energy consumption and lateral load bearing capacities of the bare RC specimen. Moreover, it is concluded that the specimens YB-2 and YB-3 showed better performance than the other specimens, especially in energy consumption and ductility.

Shear resistance of BESTOBEAM, which has angle as shear connector and was developed with purpose of easy construction, was tested. With the test results shear resistance design equation was proposed. Unlike angle connector of Eurocode 4, BESTO BEMA shear connector behaves like fixed-end beam. Therefor longer span of the shear connector the lower shear resistance it has. As a result, shear resistance of BESTOBEAM shear connector according to its length tends to decrease as its length gets longer. The authors proposed design equation of angle shear connector sased on the test results. The results from the test and the proposed equation match within 10% error range. Therefore the proposed equation can be used for designing shear connector of BESTOBEAM.
