  • In recent year, the ultra high strength concrete has highly increased and been used in many parts of the world. However, the viscosity of the ultra high strength concrete is high because of a low water to binder ratio (w/b). So that in this pater, the shear stress and the shear strain rate are directly measured by the viscometer in order to estimate the rheological properties of the ultra high strength concrete and a linear regression analysis was carried out to determine the plastic viscosity and the yield stress as slope. According to the test results, the yield stress and plastic viscosity are correlated to slump-flow, V-funnel flow time, O-lot flow time

  • In this study, an experiment was conducted to analyze mortar based rheology for 3D printing method application. The tendency of rheological properties due to the change of W/B, binder type, replacement ratio, and super plasticizer which have a great influence on the flow characteristics of concrete was experimentally analyzed. Experiments were carried out by dividing into paste and mortar. In the paste experiment, rheology was analyzed by setting W/B, binder type, replacement ratio, and super plasticizer dosage as main variables. In the mortar experiment, the rheological properties of W/B and sand ratio were analyzed. As a result, as the W/B was increased, the viscosity decreased and the FA ratio to replace FA increased and the viscosity increased. In order to increase the fluidity, substitution of only 5% of SF reduces the shear stress and the viscosity is reduced by about 83%. Mortar rheological evaluation shows that there is a critical section where a large change occurs in the W/B 30 to 40% section. Also, in the same W/B, it is analyzed that there is a critical section where the shear stress increases more than twice in the sand ratio of 50~60%.

  • The intention of this research is to give criteria of designing devices using ER fluids and MR fluids. The Properties of commercial ER fluids and MR fluids are compared using a rotational viscometer. The yield strength is compared upon changes of shear rate, temperature and applied fields. MR fluids seem less sensitive to temperature change than ER fluids. In cases of MR and ER fluid dampers, the time delay and damping force are measured in tension and compression mode when the applied field changes.

  • A numerical analysis is performed to investigate the effect of rotation on the blood flow characteristics with four different angular velocities. The artery has a cylindrical shape with 50% stenosis rate symmetrically distributed at the middle. Blood flow is considered a non-Newtonian fluid. Using the Carreau model, we apply the pulsatile velocity profile at the inlet boundary. The period of the heart beat is one second. In comparison with no-rotation case, the flow recirculation zone (FRZ) contracts and its duration is reduced in axially rotating artery. Also wall shear stress is larger after the FRZ disappears. Although the geometry of artery is axisymmetry, the spiral wave and asymmetric flow occur clearly at the small rotation rate. It is caused that the flow is influenced by the effects of the rotation and the stenosis at same time.

  • In this study, we consider the effect of nonionic surfactants on the rheological responses of emulsion systems under the action of a uniform do electric field. The model emulsions consist of a less conducting dispersed phase and a more conducting continuous phase. When the shear flow is weak, the positive viscosity effect is produced due to the formation of chain-like morphology. The nonionic surfactants used here generate two distinctively different effects. Specifically, first, the steric hindrance induced by the surfactant molecules renders the structure unstable, and thereby reduces the degree of positive viscosity effect. Secondly, the presence of surfactant molecules also prevents the rotation of the dispersed droplets by anchoring across the interface or by decreasing the size of dispersed phase. The second effect suppresses the negative viscosity effect.

  • Open microcellular foams having small-sized cell and good mechanical properties are desirable for many practical applications. As an effort to reduce the cell size, the microcellular foams combining viscosity improvers into the conventional formulation of styrene and water system were prepared via high internal phase emulsion polymerization. Since the material properties of foam are closely related to the solution properties of emulsion state before polymerization, the flow behavior of emulsions was investigated using a controlled stress rheometer. The yield stress and the storage modulus increased as viscosity improver concentration and agitation speed increased, due to the reduced cell size reflecting both a competition between the continuous phase viscosity and the viscosity ratio and an increase of shear force. Appreciable tendency was found between the rheological data of emulsions and the cell sizes of polymerized foams. Cell size reduction with the concentration of viscosity improver could be explained by the relation between capillary number and viscosity ratio. A correlative study for the cell size reduction with agitation speed was also attempted and the result was in a good accordance with the hydrodynamic theory.

  • The incomplete saturation and the void formation during the resin infiltration into fibrous porous media in the resin transfer molding process cause failure in the final product during its service. In order to better understand flow behavior during the filling process, a finite-element scheme for transient flow simulation across the micro-structured fibrous media is developed in the present work. A volume-of- fluid (VOF) method has been incorporated in the Eulerian frame to capture the evolution of flow front and the vertical periodic boundary condition has been combined to avoid unwanted wall effect. In the microscale simulation, we investigated the transient filling process in various fiber structures and discussed the mechanism leading to the flow fingering in the case of random fiber distribution. Effects of the filling pressure, the shear-thinning behavior of fluid and the volume fraction on the flow front have been investigated for both intra-tow and the inter-tow flows in dual-scale fiber tow models.

  • A carbonyl iron-based magneto-rheological suspension was compressed in the direction of the applied magnetic field and the change in rheological properties was measured. It was found that the compression did not have a large effect on the magneto-rheological response, which is in contrast to recent reports in the literature describing an almost order of magnitude increase in the shear yield stress. The difference can be attributed to the latter test's use of a sliding wedge apparatus which imparts considerable shearing to the sample during the compression.
