Stud shear connectors are the most commonly used shear connectors: up to 22mm studs are usually used in steel-concrete composite structures. To expand the current design codes for stud connectors, large studs with a diameter of more than 25mm should be investigated. Through push-out tests on large stud shear connectors that transcend the limitation of current design codes, fatigue behavior was investigated and comparisons with design equations performed. The shear stiffness of the connectors in elastic range was evaluated through shear tests on 25mm, 27mm, and 30mm studs and compared with those from static tests. The fatigue behavior of large studs was discussed in terms of residual slip and load-slip curves. The initiation of fatigue cracks in the welding part could be detected through the history of displacement range. Test results showed that the design fatigue endurance of S-N curves in current design codes could be applied to large stud shear connector.
This study investigates numerically the behavior of tilted angle shear connectors embedded in solid concrete slabs. Two different tilted angle connectors were used, titled angle with 112.5 and 135 degrees between the angle leg and steel beam flange. A nonlinear finite element model was developed to simulate and validate the experimental push-out tests. Parametric studies were performed to investigate the variations in concrete strength and connector's dimensions. The results indicate that the ultimate strength of a tilted angle shear connector is directly related to the square root of the concrete compressive strength. The effects of variations in the geometry of tilted angle connectors on the shear capacity are discussed in details. Based on the numerical analyses, two equations are proposed to estimate the ultimate capacity of tilted angle shear connectors of 112.5 and 135 degrees in the defined range of parameters.
The perfobond connector, composed of a steel plate with a number of holes, serves as a certain type of shear connector in steel and concrete composite structures. Depending on limits in hole distances and rib heights, various hole shapes including circular-hole and long-hole are alternatives for perfobond connectors. This study presented the results of tests performed on 72 push-out specimens with perfobond connectors. The purpose was to evaluate the shear strength of perfobond connectors with circular-hole and long-hole. The effects of various parameters were investigated, including the hole diameter, the hole length, the hole height, the concrete strength, the existence, diameter and strength of rebar in the hole, the thickness, height and distance of perfobond ribs, and the thickness of concrete slabs. On the basis of 132 push-out test results in references and in this study, an analytical model was proposed by regression analysis to predict the shear strength of perfobond connectors. The proposed equation agreed reasonably well with the experimental results of perfobond connectors with different hole shapes.
This paper proposes using the multi-type sensor vibration measurements, such as from a relative displacement sensors and a traditional accelerometer for the damage detection of shear connectors in composite bridge under moving loads. Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) spectra of these responses will be fused with a data fusion approach i.e., Dempster-Shafer method, to detect the damage of shear connectors. Experimental studies on a composite bridge model in the laboratory are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of using the proposed approach in detecting the damage of shear connectors in composite bridges. Both undamaged and damaged scenarios are considered. The detection results with the data fusion of multi-type sensor measurements show a more reliable and robust performance and accuracy, avoiding the false identifications.
Precast-cast insitu concrete bridge construction is widely practiced for small to medium span structures. These bridges consist of precast pre-stressed concrete beams of various cross-sections with a cast in-situ reinforced concrete slab. The connection between the beams and the slab is via shear links often included during the manufacturing process of the beams. This form of construction is attractive as it provides for standardisation, reduced formwork and construction time. The assessment of the integrity of shear connectors in existing bridges is a major challenge. A procedure for assessment of shear connectors based on vibration testing and finite element model updating is proposed. The technique is applied successfully to a scaled model bridge model and an existing bridge structure.
An experimental study of five full-scale coupling beam specimens has been conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of strengthened RC coupling beams by bolted side steel plates using a reversed cyclic loading procedure. The strengthened coupling beams are fabricated with different plate thicknesses and shear connector arrangements to study their respective effects on load-carrying capacity, strength retention, stiffness degradation, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation ability. The study revealed that putting shear connectors along the span of coupling beams produces no significant improvement to the structural performance of the strengthened beams. Translational and rotational partial interactions of the shear connectors that would weaken the load-carrying capacity of the steel plates were observed and measured. The hierarchy of failure of concrete, steel plates, and shear connectors was identified. Furthermore, detailed effects of plate buckling and various arrangements of shear connectors on the post-peak behavior of the strengthened beams are discussed.
This study focuses on the load carrying capacity and the force transfer mechanism of multi-hole perfobond shear connectors in steel-concrete composite structure. The behavior of multi-hole perfobond shear connector is more complicated than single-hole connector cases. 2 groups push-out tests were conducted. Based on the test results, behavior of the connection was analyzed and the failure mechanism was identified. Simplified iterative method and analytic solution were proposed based on force equilibrium for analyzing multi-hole perfobond shear connector performance. Finally, the sensitivity of design parameters of multi-hole perfobond shear connector was investigated. The results of this research showed that shear force distribution curve of multi-hole perfobond shear connector is near catenary. Shear forces distribution were determined by stiffness ratio of steel to concrete member, stiffness ratio of shear connector to steel member, and number of row. Efficiency coefficient was proposed to should be taking into account in different limit state.

The use of steel-concrete composite members has been significantly increased as they have the advantages of the reduction of cross sectional areas, excellent ductility against earthquake loadings and a longer life span than typical steel frame members. The increased use of composite members requires an intensive study on the shear resistance evaluation of stud connectors in high strength concrete. However, the applicability of currently available standards is limited to composite members with normal and lightweight strength concrete. In this paper, push-out tests were performed on 24 specimens to investigate the structural behavior and shear resistance of stud connectors in high strength concrete. Test parameters include the existence of shear studs, height to diameter ratio of a shear stud, its diameter and concrete cover thickness. A shear resistance equation of stud connectors is proposed through a linear regression analysis based on the test results. Its accuracy is compared with those of existing shear resistance equations for studs in normal and lightweight concrete.

Generally, in a steel girder and the concrete slab act as a composite structure, the connectors must have adequate strength and stiffness. If there are no horizontal or vertical separations at the interface, the connectors are described as rigid, and complete interaction can be said to exist under these idealized circumstances. In previous study, it was considered that the strength of stud is affected by the stud diameter, height of stud and compressive strength of concrete. The differences between previous study and this study are variables, which are shank diameter of shear connector, the spacing of shear connector, the size of specimen and the row of shear connector. So this paper, as a study on the strength of shear connector with the spacing of shear connector, size of specimen (block-out size), row of shear connector and shank diameter of shear connector resulted from the push-out specimen are conducted with ABAQUS program. It is to investigate the effects of characteristics of these factors. The load-slip relations obtained from the experiments are compared with those of analyses. From these results, the trends of stress are stress estimated and compared with push-out test.

In order to evaluate the design shear strength of composite slabs with truss-shaped shear connectors(TSC), a series of push-out tests on several types of specimens was carried out. The test results for the two parameters of bearing area and solid angle of the connector were compared to obtain the design shear force of the truss-shaped connectors. The results obtained from this study are as follows: (1) The slip-coefficients of TSC ranges from 0.87 to 3.12(${\times}10^6kgf/cm$). (2) The slip stiffness and the shear strength of TSC with $60.6cm^2$ bearing area are greater than those with $14.6cm^2$. (3) For estimating the allowable shear force of TSC, a design equation that is based on the bearing strength of the connector is suggested. (4) The mean safety factors of the critical force and the ultimate force are 2.38 and 4.62. respectively.
