This research has presented and experimental investigation on the characteristics of turbulent wake past a rectanular cylinder, according to various width/height ratio such as B/H=2.0, 2.79, 3.0, and 4.0 in a uniform shear flow. In order to perform this study, a special shear flow generator which produces the uniform shear flow has been designed and manufactured. It is found that the characteristics of the wake in a uniform shear flow are quite different from those of a uniform flow and vary with shear rate. And also, the formation of regular vortex structure is concerned with shear rate.

Underestimation of rock joint shear strength comes from an inadequate consideration of roughness mobilization behavior, which is changed by asperity size as well applied normal load. In this study, we performed rock joint shear tests, and studied the roughness mobilization characteristics related with the scale of normal stress and asperities. Test specimens with artificial triangular asperities were manufactured. The specimens consisted of 3 types, and each type represented unevenness, waviness and total roughness(superposition of unevenness and waviness). The experimental results show that the roughness mobilization characteristics are varied by the scale of normal stress and asperities. Furthermore, the investigation shows that the rate of geometrical component and mechanical component in the total roughness is also varied by the scale of normal stress and asperities. These results suggest that we should consider the roughness mobilization characteristics for the roughness quantification and the shear strength modelling.
The purpose of this study is to propose new hysteretic characteristics of medium- to low-rise RC structures controlled by both shear and flexure. Through previous study, the dual lateral force-resisting system composed of shear and flexural failure members has a new failure mechanism that cooperates to enhance the flexural capacity of the flexural failure member even after the failure of the shear member, and the existing theoretical equation significantly underestimates the ultimate strength. In this study, the residual lateral strength mechanism of the dual lateral force-resisting system was analyzed, and, as a result, an equation for estimating the residual flexural strength of each shear-failure member was proposed. The residual flexural strength of each shear-failure member was verified in comparison with the structural testing results obtained in previous study, and the proposed residual flexural strength equation for shear-failure members was tested for reliability using FEA, and its applicable range was also determined. In addition, restoring-force characteristics for evaluating the seismic performance of the dual lateral force-resisting system (nonlinear dynamic analysis), reflecting the proposed residual flexural strength equation, were proposed. Finally, the validity of the restoring-force characteristics of RC buildings equipped with the dual lateral force-resisting system proposed in the present study was verified by performing pseudo-dynamic testing and nonlinear dynamic analysis based on the proposed restoring-force characteristics. Based on this comparative analysis, the applicability of the proposed restoring-force characteristics was verified.
In this study, the deformation characteristics of atrtificially fractured joints of granite under normal and shear loading were investigated. To obtain the characteristics of joint deformation, compression and shear tests were performed in the laboratory on three different sizes of rock specimens. The rock used in the experimens was Iksan granite. Joints were produced artificially by fracturing using the apparatus for generating extension-joint. Joint normal deformability was studied by conducting cyclic loading tests on the joints. Joint closure varied non-linearly with normal stress through cyclic loadings. As normal stress increased, the joints gradually reached a state of maximum joint closure. The relation between normal stress and joint closure for mated and unmated joints was well described by the hyperbolic and exponential function, respectively. Joint shear deformability was studied by performing direct shear tests under normal stresses on the joints. it was shown that the behaviour in the prepeak range was non-linear and joint shear stiffness depended on the size of specimen and the normal stress.

In this study, chip-tool friction and shear characteristics of cold drawn free machining steels in turning were assessed. To do this, a newly developed equivalent oblique cutting model was adopted. And for comparison with those of free machining steels, chip-tool friction and shear characteristics of conventional carbon steels were also investigated. The Pb-S free machining steel shows superior machinability to others. In case of the Bi-S free machining steel, the shear stress and the specific friction energy are relatively lower than those of conventional carbon steels, but its shear strain is relatively high, so it does not show any remarkable improvement of machinability.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the buckling and dynamic characteristics for the cylindrical shell under shear loading. To do this, a vibration model tests and analyses and static buckling analyses were performed for the reduced scale model of nuclear reactor vessel. From the results of vibration modal analysis with the pre-shear displacement loads, it is known that the beam vibration mode is not affected by the shear displacement, however shell vibration modes are significantly affected by it. As the pre-shear displacement increases to the critical buckling displacement, the 1st shell vibration frequency in greatly reduces and approaches to zero value.

To secure stability and availability of Rammed Aggregate Pier method as the foundation of a structure, the shear strength characteristics according to the area replacement ratio of RAP and the relative density of in-situ ground was studied through soil laboratory tests and large direct shear tests in a model ground. As a result, the internal friction angle tends to increase in proportion to in-situ relative density(Very Loose, Loose, Medium) in composite ground formed by the same area replacement ratio of RAP and also increase in proportion to increasing the area replacement ratio(30, 40, 50%) of RAP in the same ground condition. Furthermore, the comparative analysis between the experimental value and theoretical value of the shear strength is carried out.

In end milling process, undeformed chip thickness and cutting forces vary periodically with phase change of the tool. Recently, a model has been proposed to simulate the shear and friction characteristics of an up-end milling process in terms of the equivalent oblique cutting to this. In the current study, a down-end milling process has been replaced with the equivalent oblique cutting process. And shear and tool-chip friction characteristics variation of SM45C steel has been studied using the end-mills of different helix angles. The specific shear and friction energy consumed with helix angle of $50^{\circ}$ is somewhat larger than those of$30^{\circ}$ and $40^{\circ}$. The specific shear energy consumed is about 76-77% of the specific cutting energy regardless the helix angles.
In general, the laminated rubber bearing (LRB), a composite structure laminated with the elastic rubber and steel plates, has a complex hysteretic nonlinear characteristics in relationships between the restoring force and shear deflection. The representative nonlinear characteristics of LRB include the change of hysteresis loop with cyclic shear deflections and the hardening effects at large shear deflection regions. Changes of the hysteresis loop of LRB with cyclic shear deflections affect the horizontal stiffness and the damping characteristics. The hardening behavior of LRB in large shear deflection region results in an increased horizontal stiffness and therefore, has a great impacton the seismic responses. In this paper, the seismic response analysis is carried out using the modified hysteretic bi-linear model of LRB, which takes into account the hysteresis loop change and the hardening behavior with cyclic shear deflection. The results on seismic responses are compared with those obtained using the widely used hysteretic hi-linear model. The new model is found to reveal the greater amount of peak acceleration response.

Structures are designed against earthquakes and reinforced concrete shear walls or steel bracings are usually used as aseismic resistant element. However their hysteretic characteristics in plastic region ductility and capacity of energy absorption are not always good. Besides their stiffness is so rigid that structure designed by static analysis is occasionally disadvantageous. when dynamically analized. Generally a steel plate subjected to shear force has a good deformation capacity Also it has been considered to retain comparative shear strength and stiffness Steel shear wall can be used as lateral load resistant element for seismic design. However there was little knowledge concerning shear force-deformation characteristics of steel plates up to their collapse state In this study a series of shear loading tests of steel plate collapse state. In this study a series of shear loading tests of steel plate surrounded by vertical and horizontal ribs were conducted with the parameters of D/H ratios rib type and the loading patterns. The test result is discussed and analyzed to obtain several restoring characteristics. that is shear force-deformation stiffness and yield strength etc.
