Static Penetration Test (CPT) and Dynamic Penetration Test (DPT) are commonly used in-situ tests in a routine geotechnical investigation. Besides their use for qualitative investigation (lithology, homogeneity and spatial variability), they are used as practical tools of geotechnical characterization (resistance to the penetration, soil rigidity) and modern foundation design as well. The paper aims at presenting the results of an extensive research work on the evaluation of the 1D primary consolidation settlement of saturated clayey soils on the basis of the CPT or DPT tests. The work is based on an analysis of the correlations between the tip resistance to penetration measured in these tests and the parameters of compressibility measured by the compressibility oedometer test, through a local geotechnical database in the northern Algeria. Such an analysis led to the proposal of two methods of calculation of the settlement, one based on the CPT test and the other one on the DPT. The comparison between the predicted settlements and those computed on the basis of the oedometer test showed a good agreement which demonstrate the possbility to use the CPT and DPT tests as reliable tools of computation of foundation settlements in clayey soils.
One of the most important parameters affecting nonlinearsoil-structure interaction, especially rocking foundation, is the vertical factor of safety (F.Sv). In this research, the effect of F.Sv on the behavior of rocking foundations was experimentally investigated. A set of slow, cyclic, horizontal loading tests was conducted on elastic SDOF structures with different shallow foundations. Vertical bearing capacity tests also were conducted to determine the F.Sv more precisely. Furthermore, 10% silt was mixed with the dry sand at a 5% moisture content to reach the minimum apparent cohesion. The results of the vertical bearing capacity tests showed that the bearing capacity coefficients (Nc and Nγ) were influenced by the scaling effect. The results of horizontal cyclic loading tests showed that the trend of increase in capacity was substantially related to the source of nonlinearity and it varied by changing F.Sv. Stiffness degradation was found to occur in the final cycles of loading. The results indicated that the moment capacity and damping ratio of the system in models with lower F.Sv values depended on soil specifications such cohesiveness or non-cohesiveness and were not just a function of F.Sv.

Laboratory model test results for bearing capacity of a square shallow foundation supported by a sand layer reinforced with layers of geogrid have been presented. Use of geogrids provides an economical and time efficient method for improving load-settlement, and strength characteristics of weak soils. Especially the geogrid reinforced soil will be necessary in the case of foundations supporting machines, embankments for railroads, and foundations of structures in earthquake-prone areas. Based on the present model test results, the bearing capacity ratio (BCR) with respect to the ultimate bearing capacity (UBC), at levels of limited settlement of the shallow foundation. has been determined. Also, it appears that significant improvement in the UBC of medium sands can be achieved by reinforcing elements which shows promise for future work.
At present, there are no clearly stated criteria or theories in calculating additional vertical dynamic loads that occur at the machine foundation due to vibration and reflecting them in the design at home and abroad. According to the domestic standard, although it is not a serious vibration condition, the additional dynamic load due to vibration is considered up to 100% of the static load. This is an extremely conservative design. The purpose of this study is to propose a model test method for evaluating the quantitative magnitude of additional dynamic loads that are generated at certain static loads due to vertical mechanical vibrations. As preliminary basic tests for the model tests, the test for evaluating the effects of reflective wave that may occur within a limited size soil box and the test for estimating the natural frequency of the devised model soil-foundation system were carried out. From the analysis of results for basic tests, a method to minimize the influence of the reflected wave was prepared, and the effect of the resonance of the model system was minimized during the model tests. After the basic tests, the main model tests were conducted. Through the proposed main test, the quantitative magnitude of additional dynamic loads caused by machine vibration on a shallow foundation for machine on medium dense sand foundations were evaluated. From the results of the model test, the feasibility of design applied at home and abroad was reviewed.

Geopier soil reinforcement system which crushed aggregate is put into a hole and rammed the aggregate with tamper is a viable alternative to deep foundation to over-excavation and replacement. Also, Geopier is intermediate foundation of deep and shallow foundation. In this paper, the value of Geopier element stiffness modulus($K_g$) when designed is compared with the measured value($K_g$) by the in-situ modulus Load test in the field. Also, this paper presents a technology overview of system capabilities and application for foundation reinforcement of structures.

This thesis studied the scale effects on bearing capacity and settlement characteristics by using FEM. The conclusions of the study are as follows. 1) For sandy soil, the bearing capacity ratio increased in the form of logarithm as the foundation width increased. Hence application of static mechanic theory results in overestimation of the bearing capacity when the bearing capacity should be derived from plate loading test results. 2) In clayey soil, the characteristics of the bearing capacity associated with foundation width met Terzaghi's bearing capacity theory. 3) In sandy soil, the settlement ratio increased non-linearly as foundation width increased. However, in clayey soil, the settlement ratio increased linearly. 4) In ordinary soil, the foundation width - settlement ratio turned out to be close to that of sandy soil.
Current Bridge foundation design is based on Working Stress Design(WSD), but Load Factor Based on Optimum Reliability(LFBOR) design method is more rational than the WSD. For this reason, this study proposes a reliability based design criteria for the bridge foundation, which is most common type of bridge foundation(Shallow, Pile and Caission), and also proposes the theoretical basis of nominal safety factors of stability analysis by introducing the reliability theory. The limit state equations of stability analysis of bridge foundation and the uncertainty measuring algorithms of each equation are also derived by Cornell's MFOSM(Mean First Order 2nd Moment Methods)using the stability analysis fourmula Highway Bridge Design Codes.
MFD (Make up Film Deterioration) is a gradual deterioration of applied make up and is a common problem experienced by most foundation users. Our investigation revealed that for 64% of all make up users MFD is their greatest consern is using foundations. Known that the primary cause of MFD is sebum secretion. We observed that the length of time prior to onset of MFD in people who produce high level of sebum varies significantly from person to person. This suggests that other factors besides quantity of sebum production can affect MFD. Control over this factor would, we believe, be key to developing longer-lasting makeups. We studied the relationship between MFD and skin surface conditions. Our study revealed that furrows on the skin surface affect MFD significantly. Sebum reaches the skin surface from sebaceous glands and flows along furrow on the skin. If there are many deep furrows, it takes longer for sebum to overflow. But if the furrows are few or shallow, sebum quickly overflows and spreads over the skin surface where it can degrade the make up film. Therefore even when the volume of sebum produced is the same, the rate of MFD will be different depending on the number and shape of the furrows. A longer-lasting foundation could be produced by matching personal skin condition, but this would be very difficult because individual variations in texture are very large. Therefore we approached the problem by attempting to impose sebum resistance in under make up and foundation. We have developed two new materials and make up products based on our theory. A new fluoroalkyl acrylate-methacrylates copolymer designed for incorporation in under make up is extremely sebum resistant and sweat proof. Another new acrylate polymer designed for inclusion in foundation absorbs sebum and changes to a solid. Usage tests confirm it is possible to reduce MFD by using under make up and foundation which incorporate our new materials to cover where skin furrows are few or shallow

It is necessary to develop the simple and efficient technique that ease entry of man and equipment and take the role of foundations of temporary or small structures on the soft ground. This study intends to verify the effects on the increase of bearing capacity of base projecting walls under shallow foundations and to investigate the variance of the bearing capacity of the foundations according to the interval and length of the walls. For this, model soft ground in the chamber equipped with loading apparatus is made and the loading tests on the model foundations with base projecting walls of various intervals and lengths using the apparatus are performed with measuring the loads and settlements. The results show that the base projecting walls under shallow foundations on soft ground are effective on the increase of bearing capacity and the more the number and length of the walls the larger the effects. And, when the ratio of interval to length of the walls is 1, i.e. the shape forming the base of the foundation and the walls is square, the bearing capacity is increased by 25% and the effect is optimum.
The foundation of the multi-span greenhouse structures is designed with small shallow concrete foundation considering mainly the vertical load. However, recently, due to an abnormal climate such as strong wind, horizontal load and up-lift load over design strength are applied to the foundation, causing safety problems of the greenhouse foundation. In order to reasonably evaluate the safety of greenhouse foundations, rotational and pullout stiffness expressed by the ground-foundation interaction should be evaluated, which also affects the safety of the upper structural members. In this study, three representative basic foundation types were selected by classifying greenhouse standards in Korea according to the shape, and the horizontal loading tests and theoretical calculation were performed for each foundation type. As a result of the comparison and analysis of the test and calculation, it was found that rotational resistance of the foundation is different according to the ratio of the contact area between the foundation and ground when the conditions of the foundation - ground contact surface and the mechanical properties of the ground are the same.
