This study was initiated to identify the general groundwater quality and the effects of heavy-metal enrichments in the black shales and coal materials in Dukpyung area. Groundwater quality could be divided into three groups based on the major weathering processes in the groundwater system; Group I of carbonate weathering, Group II of silicate weathering with the probable effects of acidic mine drainage, and Group III of silicate weathering with relatively high concentrations of chloride components in anions. Metal contamination of groundwater was not observed. Locally, however, acidic mine drainage appeared to be produced and recharged into the groundwater system. In addition, contamination by NO$_3$-N ranged 2 to 3 times higher than the drinking water standards, probably due to infiltration of domestic sewage and/or fertilizers into the shallow aquifer.
The Murzuk Basin covers an area in excess of $350,000{\cal}km^2$, and is one of several intra-cratonic sag basins located on the Saharan Platform of North Africa. Compared with some of these basins, the Murzuk Basin has a relatively simple structure and stratigraphy, probably as a result of it's location on a the East Saharan Craton. The basin contains a sedimentary fill which reaches a thickness of about $4,000{\cal}m$ in the basin centre. This fill can be divided into a predominantly marine Paleozoic section, and a continental Mesozoic section. The principal hydrocarbon play consists of a glacial-marine sandstone reservoir of Cambro-Ordovician age, sourced and sealed by overlying Silurian shales. The present day borders of the basin are defined by tectonic uplifts, each of multi-phase generation, and the present day basin geometry bears little relation to the more extensive Early Palaeozoic sedimentary basin within which the reservoir and source rocks were deposited. The key to the understanding of the Cambro-Ordovician play is the relative timing of oil generation compared to the Cretaceous and Tertiary inversion tectonics which influenced source burial depth, reactivated faults and reorganised migration pathways. At the present day only a limited area of the basin centre remains within the oil generating window. Modelling of the timing and distribution of source rock maturity uses input data from AFTA and fluid inclusion studies to define palaeo temperatures, shale velocity work to estimate maximum burial depth and source rock geochemistry to define kinetics and pseudo-Ro. Migration pathways are investigated through structural analysis. The majority of the discovered fields and identified exploration prospects in the Murzuk Basin involve traps associated with high angle reverse faults. Extensional faulting occurred in the Cambro-Ordovician and this was followed by repeated compressional movements during Late Silurian, Late Carboniferous, Mid Cretaceous and Tertiary, each associated with regional uplift and erosion.

Drilling and charging of the blast holes during NATM tunneling works take more than 30% of construction time among the whole tunneling work process. Prediction of ground condition ahead of tunnel face has been studied by several researchers by correlating percussion pressure and drilling speed during tunneling work with the ground condition and/or RMR values. However, most of the previous researches were conducted in the granite rock condition which is the most representative igneous rock in the Korean peninsula. In this study, drilling speeds in igneous rocks were analyzed and compared with those in sedimentary rocks (most dominantly composed of conglomerates, sandstones, and shales) under the similar RMR ranges; it was identified that the drilling speed is pretty much affected by rock types even in a similar RMR range. Under the similar RMR values, the drilling speed was faster in sedimentary rocks compared with that in igneous rock. Moreover, while the drilling speed was not much affected by change of the RMR values in igneous rocks, it became faster in sedimentary rocks as the RMR values got lower.
We conducted this study to provide essential data for implementing restoration measures on the physical properties of the geology, topography, and soil of the landcreep areas in Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do. The strata of the survey area comprised topsoil, weathered soil, weathered rock, and soft rock layers. The landcreep area, caused by colluvial debris, was located in a convex topography shape distributed as bedrock with shales and incorporated with sandstone. According to the measurement of the displacement meter, the surveyed area has crept from 1.1 mm to 6.5 mm during the recurrent landcreep between 1 July and 27 August, 2020. The landcreep had progressed over two directions (S65° W, E45° S, and E70° S) which were similar to the groundwater flow direction (E82.5° S and S16.8° W). The average slope of the landcreep area occurred on a gentle slope (19.3°), lower than the average slope of the mountain area (25°) in Korea. The bulk density in the groundwater areas was lower than that in other surveyed areas.
In the ASTM and ISRM, an uniaxial compressive strength(${\sigma}_{c}$) has been estimated to be 23(ASTM) or $20{\sim}25$(ISRM) times of point load strength index using a diametral test regardless of the rock rating or geological conditions. This paper presents a relationship between $I_{s}$ and ${\sigma}_{c}$ of a weak sedimentary rocks on Ulsan of the Kyung-Sang Basin in Korea. In the results of 291 for ${\sigma}_{c}$ test and 2310 for $I_{s}$ test from 77 spots, the predicted errors of ${\sigma}_{c}$ determined by strength ratio of ${\sigma}_{c}/I_{s}$ have been relatively less than those determined by linear regression analysis. And in case of weak sedimentary rocks such as mudstones, shales and sandstones, ${\sigma}_{c}$ should be lower than those suggested by ISRM and ASTM.
Oil shale is a sedimentary rock that contains organic compounds called kerogen that are released as petroleum-like liquids by retorting. In order to evalute oil shale as alternative oil resources, the physical properties of oil shale samples from US and Russia were investigated and Fischer assays were carried out. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that thermal degradation of oil shale consisted of two stage processes, with hydrocarbon release from kerogen followed by $CO_2$ release by carbonate decomposition. Organic compounds in oil shale have an high hydrogen/carbon ratio, and therefore liquid hydrocarbons could be obtained easily. Shale oil yields from Russian and US oil shales by Fischer assay were 12.7% and 18.5%, respectively. The density and boiling point of shale oils are higher than that of Middle East crude oil, indicating that further upgrading processes are necessary for refinery. On the other hands, sulfur contents are relatively low, and the amounts of Vanadium and Nickel are extremely small in shale oil. It was found that paraffins were rich in US shale oil while main components of Russian shale oil were oxygenated hydrocarbons.
The Sunrise Dam gold deposit is located approximately 850 km ENE of Perth, in the eastern part of the Yilgam Craton, Western Australia. The mine has produced approximately 153 t of Au at an average grade of 4.2 g/t, which stands for the most significant gold discoveries during the last decade in Western Australia. The deposit occurs in the Laverton Tectonic Zone corresponding to the corridor of structural complexity in the Laverton greenstone belt, and characterized by tight folding and thrusting. The mine stratigraphy consists of a complexly deformed and altered volcaniclastic and volcanic rocks. These have been overlain by a turbidite sequence containing generally well-sorted siltstones, sandstones and magnetite-rich shales, which are consistently fining upwards. These sequences have been intruded by quartz diorite, ultramafic dikes, and rhyodacite porphyry (Archean), and lamprophyre dikes (Palaeoproterozoic). These rocks constitute the asymmetric NNE-trending Spartan anticline with north-plunging thrust duplication of the BIF unit. The deposit is located on the western limb of this structure. Transported, fluvial-lacustrine and aeolean sediments lie unconformably over the deposit showing significant variation in relief. Gold mineralization occurs intermittently along a NE-trending corridor of ca. 4.5 km length. The 20 currently defined orebodies are centered on a series of parallel, gently-dipping ($\sim30^{\circ}$) and NESW trending shear zones with a thrust-duplex architecture and high-strain characteristics. The paragenetic sequence of the Sunrise Dam deposit can be divided into five hydrothermal stages ($D_1$, $D_2$, $D_3$, $D_4a$, $D_4b$), which are supported by distinctive features of the mineralogical assemblages. Among them, the D4a stage is the dominant episode of Au deposition, followed by the $D_4b$ stage, which is characterized by more diverse ore mineralogy including base metal sulfides, sulfosalts, and telluride minerals. The $D_4a$ stage contains higher proportions of microscopic free gold (48%) than D4b stage (12%), and pyrite is the principal host for native gold (electrum) followed by tetrahedrite-group minerals in both stages.

For effective and accurate prediction of overpressure in the Efomeh field, located in the Niger delta basin of Nigeria, integrated seismic and borehole analyses were undertaken. Normal and abnormal pore pressure zones were delineated based on the principle of normal and deviation from normal velocity trends. The transition between the two trends signifies the top of overpressure. The overpressure tops were picked at regular intervals from seismic data using interval velocities obtained by applying Dix's approximation. The accuracy of the predicted overpressure zone was confirmed from the sonic velocity data of the Efomeh 01 well. The variation to the depth of overpressure between the predicted and observed values was less than 10mat the Efomeh 01 well location, with confidence of over 99 per cent. The depth map generated shows that the depth distribution to the top of the overpressure zone of the Efomeh field falls within the sub-sea depth range of 2655${\pm}$2m (2550 ms) to 3720${\pm}$2m (2900 ms). This depth conforms to thick marine shales using the Efomeh 01 composite log. The lower part of the Agbada Formation within the Efomeh field is overpressured and the depth of the top of the overpressure does not follow any time-stratigraphic boundary across the field. Prediction of the top of the overpressure zone within the Efomeh field for potential wells that will total depth beyond 2440m sub-sea is very important for safer drilling practice as well as the prevention of lost circulation.
The Middle Carboniferous Manhang and Geumcheon formations in Taebaek area consist of sandstones, shales, and limestones. The limestones of the formations contain abundant conodonts, fusulinids, crinoids, brachiopods, bryozoans, corals, etc. This study was carried out to investigate the microfacies of limestones and conodont faunas of the formations and to determine their paleoecology in detail. The limestones of the Manhang and Geumcheon formations of the study area consist of wackestone and packstone which are composed of crinoid fragments and other various fossil fragments. Some limestone beds of the Geumcheon Formation consist of only Chaetetes corals which indicate that the limestones deposited in a warm shallow sea. Conodonts found from limestones of the Manhang Formation are Neognathodus bothrops, N. medexultimus, Hindeodus minutus, Diplognathodus coloradoensis, D. edentulus, Idiognathodus delicatus, Streptognathodus elegantulus, and S. sp. And conodonts found from the limestones of the Geumcheon Formation are Neognathodus medexultimus, N. roundyi, N. dilatus, Gondolella bella, Diplognathodus coloradoensis, D. edentulus, Hindeodus minutus, Idiognathodus delicatus, and Streptognathodus elegantulus. Among these conodonts, Diplognathodus coloradoensis, D. edentulus, and Hindeodus minutu, are found generally from limestones which deposited in the shallow seas. According to the limestone facies and conodont faunas of the Manhang and Geumcheon formations of the study area, it can be concluded that the limestones of the formations deposited in the shallow sea.
Jiaolai Basin is the Cretaceous continental sedimentary basin developed in Shandong Province of China. It is interpreted as a pull-apart basin which is filled with fluvio-lacustrine sediments and volcanic rocks. The sedimentary strata are divided into three formations: Laiyang Formation, Qingshan Formation and Wangshi Formation in ascending order. Laiyang Formation of the early Cretaceous consists of conglomerate, sandstone and shale, which are grey, black or red in color, respectively. Qingshan Formation of early Cretaceous includes various kinds of volcanic rocks. Late Cretaceous Wangshi Formation consists of red conglomerate, sandstone and shale. Various types of oil shows are observed on many outcrops in the basin such as asphalt filing fissures, oil smelling, rocks wetted with oil. However, commercial oil discovery was not made. Laiyang Formation is the richest in terms of organic matter contents. Some grey or black shales of Laiyang Formation contain more than 1% of organic matter. Kerogens of some layers mainly consist of amorphous organic matter or pollen. Thermal maturity of the organic matter reached main oil generation zone and hydrocarbon genetic potential is fairly good. According to such geochemical data, some layers of Laiyang Formation can act as hydrocarbon source rocks.
