  • This paper introduces a channel model that is a combination of Rice and log-normal statistics, with independent shadowing affectingeach direct and diffuse component, repectively. This model extends the channel model of a combined Rice and Log-normal, proposed by Corazza, to include the independent shadowing. The validity of model is confirmed by comparisons with the data collectedin the literature, the analytical model, and the computer model in terms of probability distribution of the evvelope of each model. The model turns out to be one of many well-known narrowband models in limiting cases, e.g. Rayleigh, Rice, log-normal, Suzuki, Loo, and Corazza. Finally, the examples of bit error probability evaluations for several values of the elevation angle in the channel are provided.

  • In this letter, we analyze the error performance of a mobile communication system with microdiversity and macrodiversity reception in gamma-shadowed Rician fading channels for a binary differential phase-shift keying modulation scheme. Analytical expressions for the probability density function (PDF) and moment-generating function (MGF) are derived. The average bit error probability can be calculated by averaging the conditional bit error probability over the PDF or using the MGF-based approach. Numerical results are graphically presented to show the effects of macrodiversity, correlation, number of diversity branches, and severity of both fading and shadowing.

  • In this paper, performance of a pseudonoise (PN) code tracking loop is analyzed and simulated for a direct-sequence/code-division multiple access ( DS/CDMA) system with imperfect power control in a multipath fading channel. A noncoherent first-order delay-locked loop (DLL) is considered as a PN code tracking loop. Power control error is modeled as a log-normally distributed random variable. From the simulation results, it is shown that for smaller discriminator offset, tracking jitter performance is improved while MTLL performance is degraded. It is shown that large power control error and heavy shadowing substantially degrade the PN tracking performance. The analysis in this paper can be applicable to design of PN code tracking loop for a DS/CDMA system.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the lexical representation of phonological variants derived from optional vs. obligatory phonological processes. Given that place assimilation is optionally processed, whereas nasal assimilation is obligatory in Korean, a long-term repetition priming experiment was conducted, using a shadowing task. Korean speakers shadowed words containing either assimilated or unassimilated consonants in three priming conditions and their shadow responses were evaluated. It was shown that in both place and nasal assimilations, shadowing latencies for unassimilated stimuli were longer than those for assimilated stimuli in the mismatched condition. These results suggest that even in the optional assimilation, assimilated variants were processed more easily and faster than the canonical variants. The present results argue against the frequency-based account of multiple lexical representation (Connine, 2004; Connine & Pinnow, 2006; Ranbom & Connine, 2007; $B{\ddot{u}rki$, Ernestus, & Frauenfelder, 2010; $B{\ddot{u}rki$, Alario, & Frauenfelder, 2011).

  • On-the-fly(OTF) generation of Spectral Superhomogenization(SSPH) factors is analyzed in the multigroup(MG) whole core calculation employing pin-wise continuous energy(CE) slowing-down solutions. The motivation for the work is to avoid the huge computing time required for the generation of a parametrized SSPH factor library(PSSL) which is used to resolve the angular dependency of MG resonance cross sections, and also to exploit the advantage of flexible choice of a MG structure by using CE slowing-down solutions. Two pin-wise CE slowing-down methods, the equivalent Dancoff cell method and the shadowing effect correction method, are evaluated with the OTF SSPH method. The effectiveness of the OTF SSPH method is examined for various simplified and realistic core problems with various MG structures. It is demonstrated that the computing time overhead of this method is negligible whereas the solution accuracy is considerably enhanced.

  • Resistance of the front electrode is the highest proportion of the ingredients of the series resistance in crystalline silicon solar cell. While resistance of the front electrode is decreased with larger area, it induces the optical loss, causing the conversion efficiency drop. Therefore the front electrode with high aspect ratio increasing its height and decreasing is necessary for high-efficiency solar cell in considering shadowing loss and resistance of front electrode. In this paper, we used the screen printing method to form high aspect ratio electrode by multiple printing. Screen printing is the straightforward technology to establish the electrodes in silicon solar cell fabrication. The several printed front electrodes with Ag paste on silicon wafer showed the significantly increased height and slightly widen finger. As a result, the resistance of the front electrode was decreased with multiple printing even if it slightly increased the shadowing loss. We showed the improved electrical characteristics for c-Si solar cell with repeatedly printed front electrode by 0.5%. It lays a foundation for high efficiency solar cell with high aspect ratio electrode using screen printing.

  • In this paper, we derive and analyze the channel capacity of the spread spectrum watermarking (SSW) system as an information-theoretic point of view in closed-form approximation formula in order to analyze the effect of the wireless multipath/shadowing channel. It is important to analyze the channel capacity to transmit an additive data through existing wireless channel by the SSW system. From the results, we confirm that the channel capacity of the SSW system can be determined by the HWR, WNR, PN length and host sampling frequency. Also, we verified that the variation of the channel capacity when the SSW system applied to Nakagami-m fading and Log-normal shadowing channel. The results of this paper can be applied to general spread spectrum watermarking system.

  • The satellite channel with a line-of-sight signal component is modeled by a shadowed Rician fading channel. We adopt a direct-sequence / code division multiple access (DS / CDMA), which has the advantage to suppress the multipath effect and increase the user capacity. The performance which is evaluated by bit error probability is subjected to the influence of branch number, multi-user number, and spreading code-length. As the result of the analysis, performance advance is achieved with multi-user number decreasing, number of brnaches increasing, and spreading code-length increasing as chip duration is constant. To use both of diversity combining scheme and channel coding is more efficient for performance improvement than the case using diversity combining scheme only. The use of BCH coding and convolutional coding shows better consequence than Hamming coding. Totally, the performance degradation for heavy shadowing is much larger than that for light and average shadowing as heavy shadowing decreases LOS signal.
