Optimum Sewage Discharge Strategy for Coastal Waters

  • To improve the water quality, particularly for sea bathers, the behaviour of wastewater from sewage outfalls in water adjacent to Swansea, UK, was studied using a mathematical model. The water quality in the sewage receiving basin was determined using factors like the outfall diffuser location(distance from land boundary), sewage treatment scheme, discharge time, and bacteria decay rate, etc. With respect to these factors, an optimal strategy for sewage discharge was then investigated to minimize bacteria levels along the bathing beaches. As water quality criteria, predicted faecal coliform levels were monitored along the coast adjacent to the outfall locations. The resultant values were compared with EC Mandatory(<2000, 95 % of 20 samples) and Guideline Standards(< 100, 80 % of 20 samples). For the advective-diffusion equation, the non linear advective terms were represented using the ULTIMATE algorithm and the third-order accurate QUICKEST scheme to avoid numerical diffusion. Details of the simulation results are then presented as an optimal policy for sewage discharge in the region.

  • Korea has been trying to manage water quality of rivers and lakes in many ways. Ministry of Environment is making continuous efforts of operation control improvement such as strengthening effluent standards in sewage treatment plants and expanding Tele-Monitoring System (TMS). However, evaluation method for operations of sewage treatment plants and establishment system of effluent standards are inadequate. The objective of this study is to evaluate for operations of sewage treatment plants using statistics technique such as frequency analysis, percentile, normal distribution analysis. We used the effluent data (BOD, COD, SS) collected at 299 plants in 2012. The values were very low by comparison with standards. The Data followed a normal distribution. We think that distribution characteristics are closely related with effluent standards, especially T-P and BOD. Statistics technique attempted in this study can be used to evaluate for operations of sewage treatment plants and assess the appropriateness of effluent standards based on TBEL(Technology-based effluent limitation). And, this technique can be used to figure out the overall level of plants, the status of each plant and the favorable treatment process for each item (BOD, COD etc.). Data acquired through this method can be used to improve facilities and operation techniques and decide on a sewerage policy.

서울시 하수처리장 수질의 변동 및 방류수의 영향 평가 (The Assessment on the Effect of Discharge and Variation of Water Quality from the Sewage Treatment Plants in Seoul)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the variation characteristics of influent and effluent quality from sewage treatment facilities using activated sludge processes and to assess the impact caused by discharge of treated sewage on the receiving water Monthly data of five water quality items (BOD, COD, SS, T-N, T-P) were used to understand the water quality at three sewage treatment plants in Seoul for five years from 1999 to 2003. Concentration differences of water quality parameters were observed between upstream and downstream site at the sewage treatment plant outfall to investigate the impact of discharge in Tan stream and Han river basin. 1. Due to the effect of continuous improvement in sewer system, the concentrations of influent went on increasing generally. 2. Effluent concentrations of BOD, COD and SS showed the trend of a little decreasing, but the trend of increasing in T-N and T-P. 3. In Tan stream basin, the impact of sewage treatment plant discharge was not observed directly, because concentration of discharge was lower than stream water's. But discharges from sewage treatment plants affected water quality at downstream site in Han river, concentration of T-P especially.

  • 국내 하수처리시설의 발전으로 인해 최근 유지관리 측면에서의 중요성이 높아지고 있으나, 국내 여건의 부족으로 인해 하수처리 시설의 자산관리가 제대로 정착되지 못하고 있다. 현재 수많은 하수처리시설이 가동 중에 있음에도 불구하고 운영비용의 정확한 통계와 분석, 특히 대수선비와 보수비에 있어서는 대부분의 지방자치단체에서 일반 경상수선비 또는 보수비 하나로만 집계하고 있으며, 민간투자사업으로 시행되고 있는 사업들은 정부기관이나 어떠한 민간기관에서도 운영비용 산정에 있어 명확한 기준에 의해 분석이 이루어지지 못하고 있는 실정에 있다. 본 연구에서는 현재 수행된 하수처리시설 대수선비를 자산화 할 경우의 영향을 분석하여 자산관리의 효율성을 분석하였다. 또한 대수선비 산정에 있어서의 현행 문제점을 분석하고, 제도개선 방안을 제시하였다.

오수처리용 인공습지내 토양의 이화학적 특성조사 (A Study on the Physical and Chemical Characteristics of the Constructed Wetland Soil for Sewage Treatment)

  • The soil from constructed wetland system for sewage treatment was analyzed to examine physical and chemical characteristics. Clogging and lowered permeability were the physical matters of concern, and nutrient and salt accumulation were the chemical matters of concern. However, the soil properties of the constructed wetland system after 3 year operation demonstrated no degradation and still the soil works almost same as the initial stage. Encouragingly, no sludge accumulation was observed inside the system. Therefore, it implies that the wetland sewage treatment system can work continuously as long as it is operated and managed properly not to cause excessive pollutant loading.

스마트 하수처리장 도입에 필요한 운전제어기술에 관한 연구 (A Study on Operation Control Technology Required for Introduction of Intelligent Sewage Treatment Plant)

  • 스마트(Smart) 하수처리장은 하수처리 전 과정에 대한 ICT 기반의 실시간 모니터링, 원격 제어 관리 및 지능화 체계를 구축하여 안전하고 깨끗한 물환경을 조성하는 것을 의미한다. 이러한 스마트 하수처리장의 핵심이 되는 기술이 계측기를 활용한 운전제어 기술이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구진은 국내에서 진행중인 하수처리장 지능화 연구사업들을 참고하여 지능화사업 구축 시 필요한 운전제어 기술들을 분석하고 제시하였다. 분석 결과 규모별 제어, 반류수 제어, 연계처리수 제어, 약품량 제어, 동절기 운영제어, 총 유기탄소 제어까지 총 6개의 제거 기술에 대해 제시하였다. 규모별로는 소규모와 중규모 대규모로 구분할 수 있는 기준을 제시하였고, 반류수 제어의 경우 반류수를 관리할 수 있는 수질 및 유량 센서의 위치를 제시하였다. 연계처리수 제어의 경우 연계처리수가 하수처리장에 미치는 영향과 제어 지점을 제시하였으며, 약품주입량 제어의 경우 지능형 하수처리장 도입에 따라 약품 주입량을 최적화할 수 있는 시스템을 제시하였다. 동절기 운영의 경우 수온 저하에 따른 질산화 저하를 고려하였을 때 제어해야 하는 센서와 펌프를 제시하였다. 총 유기탄소 제어의 경우 향후 오염총량제를 고려한 연동 시스템을 제시하였다. 이러한 운전제어 시나리오들은 향후 지능형 하수처리 알고리즘과 시나리오에 사용될 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

강원 영서지역 하수처리장이 수질에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant on Water Quality in Western Kangwon Area)

  • The effects of municipal sewage treatment plants on the water quality and effluent loading were investigated. BOD removal rates from Wonju, Hoengseong, and Hongcheon municipal sewage treatment plants were $88.9\%,\;80.6\%,\;90.7\%$ and T-P removal rates were $47.3\%,\;56.5\%,\;71.6\%,$ respectively. Also, BOD effluent leading from WonJu, Hoengseong, and Hongcheon treatment plants were 1,520 kg/day, 75 kg/day, 55 kg/day and T-P effluent loading were 203.9 kg/day, 4.2 kg/day, 4.0 kg/day, respectively. In terms of water quality distribution by distance of flow, BOD of the Seom river rapidly rose from 1.6 mg/l to 4.0 mg/l and T-P rose from 0.034 mg/l to 0.321 mg/l. Also BOD of the Hongcheon river showed a slowly rise from 1.1 mg/l to 1.4 mg/l and T-P from 0.011 mg/l to 0.026 mg/l. In conclusion, the effects of municipal sewage treatment plants on the water quality proved that T-P was higher than BOD. Consequently, in order to improve water quality, it is necessary to adopt an advanced sewage treatment system like nutrient removal.

개인하수처리시설 처리수의 수질 개선을 위한 응집보조제로서의 천연제올라이트 적용에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Application of Natural Zeolite as Coagulant Aid for Effluent Quality Improvement in Private Sewage Treatment Facility)

  • The purpose of this study is to solve the problem of nutrient removal due to rapid hydraulic retention time (HRT) variation in small size private sewage treatment facility and to have better effluent quality by using natural zeolite as a coagulant aid. The experiments were conducted by applying different conditions of HRT, coagulant, and zeolite dosages. As an experimental result, $TBOD_{5}$, TSS, and TP removal efficiencies were 64.9%, 94.5%, and 98.8% at co-injection with zeolite. Overall removal efficiencies of $TBOD_{5}$, TSS, and TP have improved 15.7, 28.7, 6.1%, respectively. This result shows that zeolite addition could improve flocculation, increase setting velocity, and thus have better treatment. Therefore the use of zeolite as a coagulant aid can be useful in small size private sewage treatment facility, where especially extra nutrient removal is required to meet the legal standard for discharge.

  • 본 연구는 하수 및 오폐수 처리를 위해 침지식 수처리 공정 적용을 위한 평판형 MF막인 $ENVIS^{(R)}$을 이용한 MBR SYSTEM 적용에 관한 연구이다. (주)퓨어엔비텍에서 만든 장치를 이용하여 공장의 오수시설($10\;m^3$/일)과 폐수처리장($30\;m^3$/일) 현장에서 실험을 수행한 결과, 공장 오수처리에 있어 제거율은 각각 SS $99.7\%$, BOD $97.6\%$, COD $96.8\%$였으며, 폐수처리에 있어 제거율은 각각 SS $99.6\%$, BOD $95.6\%$, COD $80.3\%$였다.

부레옥잠과 미나리를 이용한 연속식 하수처리에서 COD, N 및 P의 제거 (Sewage Treatment Using Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and Watercress (Oenanthe Javanica))

  • 본 연구에서는 농어촌취락배수의 효율적 처리를 위해 수생식물인 부레옥잠과, 미나리를 이용한 연속식 실험에서 유기물부하(COD)와 Total N, Total P 등을 HRT와 농도를 달리하여 제거효율을 측정하였다. 유기물(COD)의 제거효율은 HRT가 2 day인 부레옥잠조에서는 평균 50%의 제거율을 보였으며, 미나리조에서는 HRT 1.2$\sim$2 day 동안 30$\sim$50%의 제거율을 보였다. 영양염류의 제거효율은 총 질소의 경우 부레옥잠조는 약 329 kg $N/ha{\cdot}day$의 부하에서 HRT 2$\sim$3 day인 경우 40$\sim$53%가 제거되었으며, $NH_4^+-N$의 제거효율은 평균 52%로 Total N의 제거효율보다 다소 높았으며, 인은 8.2 kg $P/ha{\cdot\}day$의 부하에서 HRT 2$\sim$3 day인 경우 31$\sim$40%로 조사되었다. N 및 P 흡수율은 미나리보다 부레옥잠이 높게 나타났으며, 인의 흡수율은 질소의 흡수에 비해 낫게 조사되었다.
